In this excerpt from the August 2019 episode of Ask the Vet ( • Ask the Vet - Toxic pl... ), Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan answer a question about riding horses with arthritis. Dr. Gray also gives some advice on activities to do with your horse to ease into work and talks about one foolproof way to figure out if you should continue doing something with your horse or not.

A nice long warm up really helps. Every horse is different, but my horse has had arthritis in his stifle for about 13 years (he's 19 now) due to a fall as a yearling and the way it healed. We tried everything and we've finally found what keeps him comfortable

Please and do you still riding him or if not, when did you stop?

I like to walk in each direction as well. My guy has navicular so it really helps him warm up

Depends how lame the arthritis is making the horse. Mine has chronic arthritis and his ridden days are over, he can’t cope with rider weight as his bones have moved too much, in hand is the most he can do. I have another who benefits as it makes him less stiff.

I have a question I just got a horse bt I just also noticed it has a hernia it's about 3 fingers or less wide hes a 4 yr stud is it safe to ride him? Is it safe for him to not get surgery if hernia doesn't grow
