How to Install a Metal Railing
Mark installs a custom metal railing using anchoring cement. A custom metal railing can be purchased from a welding shop. Mark recommended using one with solid steel posts. The one Mark installed was made by Mike's Welding Company. All the materials Mark used for this installation, including the caulking gun, the anchoring cement, and the coring drill, can be found at home centers.
Expert assistance for this segment was provided by MJM Masonry.

Tom demonstrates the correct way to replace a cracked kitchen floor tile. Finding a matching tile can be difficult. Look on the underside of the tile for clues and bring the tile with you to local hardware stores and tile shops when looking for a match. Everything Tom used to replace the tile, including the cold chisel, hammer, notched trowel, and grout can be found at home centers. The acrylic base Tom used in place of thinset is Acrylpro Professional Tile Adhesive, manufactured by Custom Building Products. It can be found at most home centers.

So the caulk at the end is so that water doesn't get into the sunken hydraulic concrete in the winter and freeze. once it freezes it can expand and break the granite over time and also lift the granite if water penetrates deep enough. Just for those who may be wondering.

I have a German core drill, similiar to what was used here. Can be used with dry bits or wet bits. 2 different bits to buy depending on material drilling. Drill -- $1400. Bits, add more $$$$ depending on size. Some rental tool places have these. Some charge for drill, then they measure the bit, then remeasure upon return and charge you according to how much the diamond bit wore. These drills are absolutely the best at making nice holes in poured concrete, cut through rebar, brick/block walls.

It really doesn't get too cold here in So Cal where I live but I used to run the heater portion of my central air/heating before. Three years ago, I had good double pane windows installed in my condo and I haven't had to turn on my heater since then. I'm old so I do like self stick vinyl tiles for ease of installation and replacement. I bought some recently that actually have the look and feel of stone.

There are places where houses do not have AC?? I guess is just since I live in Houston where it gets to 100 degrees and there is 100% humidity I just expect every place to have AC. Whenever I saw apartments advertising that they had AC as part of their "amenities" I was like that is not an amenity that is a necessity
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 3 жыл бұрын
The age of the house has a lot to do with whether it has AC or not. Go back long enough, and the houses were designed in such a way to resist the mid day sun. Now, they disregard those old design strategies and just build them as low cost and air tight as possible.

Core drilling is the worst way. That cheap steel will rust out in a few years. Where the steel meets the caulking will shrink and allow water to come through. Freeze thaw and you will get cracks. The steel will rust inside that pocket. Flush mount when done correct is just as strong or more. With those cheap rails the rail will fail before either install method. After that which is easier to replace? Some old methods need to be retired.

@@herbwheeler4470 doesn't matter, still steel. That size of post will easily bend if someone pushes on it. Or worse break the stone. Atleast they could have used aluminum. Which is the standard in railings. Especially with no newel post, that railing will be gone in a few years.

@@themalacastsure if your using 3/8" plate. I could weld up a steel rail that would never move. But in railings, over all features,.price, weight, longevity, aluminum is the best. No argument. Many manufacturers have lifetime warranty on product and finish. No one in steel is offering that not even with powder coating or epoxy finish. Unless its stainless,.and a high quality, every steel handrail will rust out, this one faster because of the install method. Why don't they make airplanes out of steel?
