Hi Ryan, so if Lanthanum Chloride binds PO4 into beads and these can dissolve back into the water at low pH, doesn’t that mean it should not be used in conjunction with a Calcium reactor? Should you turn the CaRX off for 24h after dosing? In my case I can’t as my Alk would plummet....?

So Ryan - I have an idea. I completely understand that this is Bulk REEF Supply, but what about a piece on fish only systems? Many of those can have their own unique beauty and significant investment. In this most recent series you have mentioned (just as an aside) that techniques like sulfur denitrators, NoPox, and others as good fish only options. What in the BRS opinion should be the optimal fish only system? I completely understand that the “tolerance” of fish over say SPS sort of lends itself to the idea of just do whatever for filtration, flow and lighting and the fish will be fine. As a responsible aquarist I would love to know your opinion on what would be great modalities to make them thrive and go beyond fine. Is the sulfur denitrator the best or a efficient refugium/ ATS, etc? What flow is best for fish or should flow be best determined by a utilitarian goal such as suspension of detritus? Is there certain additives/ substrates/ or supplements that should be considered is fish health and flourishment is the primary goal? Apologies for the long winded comment! Absolutely love this series!!!

Overdosing carbon had my fish gasping for oxygen and I even lost a Naso tang from this I believe. Wish I could get and try cheato but where I live only caulerpa seems to be available. I use it and it's fine but it does attach to stuff. That cheato just looks so easy to manage.

So I am considering exactly this. I'm not sure my skimmer is pulling its weight while carbon dosing so thinking about ditching it and going fuge only with a kessil h80 (it will be about 17l 12% net volume). No2 po4 are low but it's due to ever growing algae in the DT. Advice please

How can I make sure that the Macroalgea I buy is pest free (I'm from Canada and not sure AlgeaBarn ship here)? Can you dip or quarantine chaeto to make sure no pest is added to the tank?

@insanity4224
@insanity4224 5 жыл бұрын
Travis Decola if your salt levels are low than DON’T top up evaporated water with fresh water. Let your salt level rise this way as it is slow enough not to hurt any life in the tank. When you need to top up use salt water until the salt level in your tank is corrected then you can use fresh water as top up to keep levels stable. *never add salt directly to the tank!

Thank you for the advise and I have had amazing support from BRS as well as the BRS Facebook community. I have been told that purity is the way to go for several reasons that you don’t have to turn off any pumps or skimmers. Once I get this problem under control I will be modifying my Coralife 32 nano with a 20 gallon refugium. Thanks for the awesome support that’s why BRS is my only one stop shop. Keep up the awesome customer service and knowledge you guys put out. BRS gets 5 stars from me.

We don't provide any sort of maintenance or setup services. That said, if you reach out to your local fish store, they may offer that service or could at least point you in the right direction to someone in your area that does.

I wish the Stump Remover portion of this was based a little more in fact and less in opinion. I understand the livestream is more opinion based and I am NOT calling Ryan out in any way. Spectracide Stump Remover has a "fact" sheet that was publicized at one point showing it to be super pure KNO3. I have personally mixed up two bottles, bought years apart and never saw any brown residue of any kind. I was actually surprised how clear it is. I think understanding how KNO3 works is important before saying it "kills" stumps and why would I dose that to my tank. It speeds up the rotting process of a stump, it doesn't kill it. All of our tanks contain KNO3 in some way so adding it won't kill anything. Could impurities kill stuff? Sure and that is a legit fear. Years ago when people started using stump remover, I am not sure that finding clean sources of any nitrate product (potassium, sodium, calcium, whatever it may be) was as easy as it is now. Now it is much easier to find a clean source of nitrate on Amazon. It is also contradictory to say you want a controlled and precise dose to eliminate phosphate but "feed more" is the answer to register nitrate. Feed more has zero control and could spike nitrate and phosphate higher than intended/expected or you could not add enough for your goals. Dosing a nitrate product is very controlled and easy to do. What is the best practice is a different conversation all together. Either way it ends in number chasing and most of us are far better off not doing that. I hope this comment comes off the right way as text is hard to discern tone.

I appreciate the well thought out feedback. In the end all this is just opinion and I guess I was just sharing after reading that thread and how many people had issues vs those that didn’t it just wasn’t for me. But even after that I figured it was worth going to the store and buying some and taking a look. After it mixed up brown there was just no way I could put this in a tank with animals that rely on me to care for them. That doesn’t mean it’s bad it just means I determined it wasn’t for me. When people ask me my opinion I guess I feel compelled to answer honestly even though I know it’s going to get me in trouble. I know full well this wouldn’t be a popular opinion for some:) I think sometimes it’s because people think I want to sell a bottle of nitrate or something but I think as more of these lives come out it will just be increasingly obvious that I just don’t know how to tell to any other way than I see it and the most reliable path to a successful reef tank is always the goal :)
@raisethereef
@raisethereef 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryanbatcheller394 I wasn't calling you out. I know some people think you are just "trying to sell" something but I don't. And if you are, I don't care. In this day and age it isn't hard to do a quick search and see who is lying. There is a reason you guys are number 1 in this space and it isn't because you are shills. I hate to use that word but I think it applies here. We see far too many companies who push their crap because a lot of this hobby can't be "verified". We deal in a lot of anecdotal evidence in this hobby. "I dosed X and Y happened so it must be Z." I find it odd that your bottle was brown because both of mine (VERY small sample size I know) have been super clear and the pellets are bright white. We both know that Spectracide isn't pushing QC however. I do think we have to step back and look at why some people had problems and others didn't. There are 2 things IMO here.1) Their bottle was impure and poisoned the tank in some way. I question how much they dosed though because a couple mL in 100 gallons would have to be SUPER concentrated to kill stuff in our tanks. 2) They dosed far too much and caused a destabilizing event on corals that were already unhealthy. A lot of people dose nitrates AFTER the problems have been there for quite some time. I know if you guys carried a nitrate product of your own, I would buy it and have it on hand and wouldn't ever think about Stump Remover again. At the same time, would everyone think a little differently if the bottle just said Spectracide KNO3? Technically, you could take ANY KNO3 product and label it "Stump Remover" since it is the KNO3 chemical that is breaking down the stump. This takes months to years by the way to work. Spectracide doesn't have a proprietary blend AFAIK. Their fact sheet just says 100% KNO3. Thanks for the reply

Is it only my impression or did Ryan lost his faith on popular reefing methods like zeovit, triton or red sea? Tbh the 160 looked its best when it was under zeo. I think it was triton who lost him.
