Give Me An Answer with Stuart & Cliffe Knechtle

9 жыл бұрын

Cliffe Knechtle has a great conversation with college students at a campus in the southwest US.
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

KC Sir, what you are stating is certainly showing a glimpse into your very narrow minded bigotry. How do you think your better than the people mocking you above? You are simply trying to outdo them in disrespect. Which reveals to me that you lack the understanding of expressing respect to someone else’s value, regardless what they show unto you. Now this is a judgement off of a execution of your understanding and respect, this isn’t unfounded. I’m not trying to be disrespectful. Saying a believer in a “male space sorcerer incantation spell creating universe from NOTHING.” Sir, none of us hold that opinion. How could one provide evidence of something they do not hold to? That would be equal to say, “You believe in a flying spaghetti nothingness, it’s what created nothingness into matter and energy, and let it sit there for trillions and billions of years. Give me ONE evidence there’s a flying spaghetti nothingness!” That would be outright repugnant for me to display your beliefs in a deceitful, disrespectful, and dishonest way. Then to ask to provide evidence for which it does not exist, it would even more dishonest.. That is only revealing a lack of understanding and showcasing narrow minded bigotry to another’s beliefs. No matter who says it or why... Hopefully you’re more of a man now, then expressing your disrespect like a child on a keyboard. That was very hard to read on this comment, especially to a video and comment section that usually has a lot of civil/intellectual dialogue.

@bonnie43uk
@bonnie43uk 9 жыл бұрын
Alex bodea Hi Alex, you ask, why is it wrong to kill with out God?. We humans are social creatures, we perform better in groups and communities. Within those communities we have built a social structure of things that are good, and things that are bad, stealing, raping killing for example are obviously bad because those actions have negative consequences within the community, on the other hand, helping, teaching, and generally getting on with our fellow man, or interacting, has positive benefits for everyone. You don't need a God to tell you this, it's inherent within all of us. Even animals have social structures and boundaries.

bonnie43uk i dont think i am a good person nor are you , i think at times we do good things and we try but many times we are selfish , and we do things to hurt others even tho we do not want it but its from our nature as fallen humans So when you say " we have built a social structure of things that are good, and things that are bad, stealing, raping killing " i think thats not right because thoes things if we believe it or not will never be right ... its not like we had to evolve to think Raping is bad .. not from day 1 and onward its been wrong And thats because we have a moral law giver
@bonnie43uk
@bonnie43uk 9 жыл бұрын
Alex bodea Hi Alex, I don't believe in a moral law giver ( I think by that you mean the Christian God if I'm not mistaken). Mankind has been around for hundreds of thousands of years in some form, we have slowly evolved our morals over a long time, and they are still evolving as we speak. I can give you plenty of examples of how morality is evolving for the betterment of mankind. You also said stealing will never be a right thing to do, again I can give you examples where stealing would be morally acceptable. My father during WWII was a prisoner being taken by Russian soldiers to a forced labor camp in Siberia, he managed to escape, on the verge of starvation, he stole some turnips from a Russian farmers field to survive. I believe that was a morally acceptable act, had he not taken those turnips he would have died of hunger. Also, things we find morally acceptable today could well be seen as morally unacceptable in, lets say 50 years time. In the same way 50 years ago here in the UK homosexuality was illegal, now it's totally legal and acceptable in our society, although some religious faiths condemn it, in general, it's perfectly normal behaviour. Society dictates morality.

At the beginning of the video at about 00:45 Cliffe asks, "Where does the ability to reason come from?", quite rightly as I see it, the young man answered "From ourselves". We have evolved our ability to reason and think over many many generations going back to our early ancestors, any good anthropologist or sociologist will have a good answer to how we began to use our brains to outwit other animals, giving us an excellent competitive edge. It's taken us a long way over hundreds of thousands of years, from when we first began to climb down from the trees to standing on our own 2 feet, right up to today where we've even branched into space. We really are quite a clever species on an upward curve of understanding.

+bonnie43uk I agree, she made the best points and they were more thought out, but there were still inconsistent. In a godless universe, what one animal does to another animal is ethically irrelevant. If Naturalists were consistent, they'd admit that there is no rational basis for moral indignation or outrage in a godless universe. There is no moral obligation. What happens in a world where it's matter and motion just happens. Unfortunately, Cliffe couldn't convince her of that obvious truth no matter how much sense he made and the amount of analogies he used.
@bonnie43uk
@bonnie43uk 9 жыл бұрын
+2row777 I think you missed the whole point of her argument. Just because there is no God doesn't mean there is no morality, we create our own morality based on us being a social species that works better in groups, over time we've built up a social structure that has no need for an external supernatural overseeing God.
@mathias5171
@mathias5171 9 жыл бұрын
In your view, "we create our own morality". This is exactly the problem. In your view, everyone creates their own morality and no one else as any right to tell anyone else that their morality is what should be followed because morality is relative to a group of social animals. I can see that you are very old and set in your ways, so I'm not going to bother trying to argue with you, because no matter what you read on youtube comments, you will never be convinced since you have tried your whole life to convince yourself that there is no God. At best, you could be agnostic, but only the most arrogant and close-minded person would look out at the universe and inwardly at themselves and come to the conclusion that there is absolutely no God.

14:02: She asks about being on your death bed? Does saying Jesus is my homeboy get me into heaven? Let's answer it this way: We as Christians DO NOT SERVE A STUPID GOD! What do I mean? God is not like us. We cannot know the true intentions of another person's heart and vice versa. On the other hand, God knows, every single intention in our hearts and every motivation. He knows why you're doing, saying and thinking everything you're doing, saying and thinking! ANNNNNNND if you're on your death bed giving a frivolous insincere confession, He's going to see the insincerity in your heart and He's going to "reward" you accordingly. Conversely, if your confession and subsequent repentance IS SINCERE and not trying to mock His intelligence and omniscience, THEN you'll be rewarded accordingly...

I think cliffe did well in this debate ! Love all his videos. His response about the death bed conversion was off though. @Jociah notice, Cliffe says if that person genuinely repents and ask for forgiveness then he will be saved. Notice he uses the thief on the cross who ask Jesus for forgiveness. So his response wasn't off. The atheist just want to know if he could get a jail free card as you were saying but cliffe wasn't wrong about what he said. The only person who can know if you are genuine is God. So you can't personally assume that someone may not be genuine or not at their deathbed, only God. I am willing to bet that the female, if she was in a room full of hostages, and every hour on the hour the hostage takers killed a person until their demands were met and she was next in line, and had 60 minutes to reflect on life and her life, she would be begging and pleading not to be killed and that her life be spared and saved. Like Cliffe explained, the thief on the cross next to Jesus knew his time was up and he was going to die, yet he asked Jesus to remember him and was saved. Her argument is just one of many atheists use to avoid the thought of an eternal judgement, but in reality she knows that in certain situations whether she lives or dies it’s out of her hands and in the hands of someone else. And when she has no control over that except to plead for her life and/or ask for forgiveness she has to put her hope and trust in that other person. Just like she trusts a pilot or a surgeon to keep her safe.

Even though I'm an Atheist, to an extent I agree with Cliffe, if there is no God then there is no ultimate purpose or point to life other than what we make of it and what we reason out to be the best way of living but here's where I part company with him, the fact that there is no ultimate point to it all doesn't then make me think...... 'heyyyyyy.....if there's no God then there's no ultimate purpose to life so there has to be a God'.....this reasoning is a bit like thinking....'if there is no such thing as real magic or Santa Claus then that would be a shame'.....well yes it is a shame but it doesn't change the fact that there is no such thing as real magic or Santa Claus. This kind of thinking is of the wishful kind, like, because we don't like the cold hard reality of the situation we decide we want to believe the contrary, okay, I understand it, we all run away from the cold hard reality of life at times and indulge in a bit of make believe, I do too sometimes but not ALL the time and I certainly am not going to constantly believe something is true just because it feels better to me, I want hard evidence before I really believe something, if someone wants me to believe that there really is such a thing as magic then they will have to show me why I should believe it and it has to be a reason that stands up to scrutiny. Sure it would be great to believe it but I refuse to believe it just because it would be great, when it comes to the existence of God, Jesus etc, same principle, I'm willing to believe but I need hard, indisputable evidence and I'm afraid that so far I have just not been given any, sure I've heard some great Theist/Creationist arguments but they all fall down upon further examination and scrutiny, besides...and this is something I've said often, if this God is really there and wants us to know then surely he could do a lot more to convince us, a supreme being ought to be able to indisputably prove their existence ought they not?, why rely on preachers, a book etc to tell the world when as a supreme, ultimate being you could tell the world yourself in such a way that no preacher ever could??, I don't mean the old 'look how great the Universe is' kind of 'evidence' for a God, I mean, why can't this being just show himself in such a way that there would be no more doubt??, I suggest the answer is because this being doesn't exist and that is what I will continue to presume until (if ever) this being does show himself to me and prove me wrong, I'm waiting!

@JohnCashin

@@seeqr9 Ideally, face to face, because I presume that if such an all powerful being exists and they wanted us to know they are there, they could use their power to manifest themselves in a face to face kind of a way, but if not, there would be plenty of ways that a being with unlimited power could manifest themselves in an IDENTIFIABLE way, emphasis on IDENTIFIABLE because it's all very some theists saying "well how did the Universe get here?" but that's not a divine being showing themselves IDENTIFIABLY, that's answering a mystery by suggesting another mystery is the "answer" to the question.

Remember the thief in the cross how he was forgiven in his last hour of his life. Unless Jesus showed to you already and you are well alive and still ignore it in your whole life then you decide to accept him in your death bed. We don't know if you will really forgiven. Ignoring Jesus is different from not knowing Jesus from the start like the thief.

"We give people value" has to be the worst argument I've heard in a loooong time. Yes we can assign them some value to ourselves based on what we like and maybe give them happiness with kind words, but that doesn't umprove nor depreciate their value..to assume you have any bearing on whether another person you dont know has value is dishonest at best and self righteous at worst

Ugh. This conversation of all of them offends my historical nerve a lot. This debate is quite literally thousands of years old, and these kids are jumping into the middle of the conversation without the benefit of the footnotes from their forebears. They are presenting contradictions when compared to great atheistic philosophers, and it is insulting that they are pretending to be versed enough to engage "because feelings."

Why a human has value if they are created by God probably goes over most peoples head just like these students. Any justification to a human because of God would be logically a fixed or objective standard, where justification derived by a human viewpoint is arbitrary or subjective. If all humans agreed on a view, this does not then make it an objective justification but collective subjectivity or even just opinion of many. A fixed standard does not move and can be relied on because of this. When a measurement is made it is done off a reliable and unmoving foundation or something fixed to the foundation. Measurements that are at best guesses in the air are not reliable and are just at best. God of the Bible is even referred to as the Rock such as Psalms 18:2 and 2 Samuel 22:3. Just a fascinating detail of the consistency in the justification by God.

"Measurements that are at best guesses in the air are not reliable." And what would be the absolute standard of lenght and weight? I agree they are relative (as in not-absolute).. they are still objective when properly defined (as in not-subjective). It is the mashing up of these terms that causes the confusion. Moral objectives work just fine as long as we agree on the definitions and the frame of reference. If we don't agree on the definitions.. yes they are relative. But i do not see how a god could make a difference as long as we have the free will to disagree with him.

P.G. Burgess Without God, there could be no objective standards for anything at all, and yet there are. I do agree with you about the mashing up of the terms "absolute" and "objective" -- I usually stick with "objective." Without God, there could be no objective moral ideals, and yet there are. Agreement does not make any ideal objectively right -- atheist Hitler and his atheistic generals agreed that murdering Catholics and Jews was objectively right, but they were incorrect about that, notwithstanding their mutual agreement. You can disagree with God all you want, but you are still wrong.

Spare yourselves, the striped shirt student has a heart of wrath and feels God's forgiveness is illegitimate. Which means, deep in that students heart is a core of wrath, which is fueled by a lack of forgiveness. Without forgiveness, there is no evidence of LOVE, and without LOVE, there is no relationship with GOD. This student is living for revenge, and will get it but not how they imagine. Please pray they find LOVE and FORGIVENESS. Each of them is secretly hoping they can act out vengeance. "Vengeance is MINE." Sayeth the Lord. Get out of the judgment business kids.

Even if life from non-life is proven impossible, which currently is very unlikely to be proven so, given the advancement and evidence supporting the hypothesis of abiogenisis growing, it in no way gives supporting evidence to a biblical God being true.

There are more ways the universe can be chaotic then ways it can be orderly. The more science discovers order in the universe the less likely it came about by chance. Science has reduced the probability abiogenesis is true by magnitudes, look up Douglas Axe and he can show you the math.

It is very simple if you break any laws in your country then will surely be punished which is normally a fine or prison. However, the same apply to sinners who deny Jesus Christ and also break GOD's laws will surely be punished in the afterlife. Sad but the truth of the matter that GOD dwells in eternity so think about it, the afterlife is going to be eternal for Heaven and the lake of fire (known as Hell). So there are no excuses to say "It is not fair..." think about again, you have the Free Will to obey or break any laws. Now the difference with the afterlife is Jesus Christ paying our sins on the cross for those who except him because it only takes one sin to be condemned. You could argue here and say that is truly unfair that punishment is more extreme and next to impossible to do on one's own merits. Exactly right, GOD knew Men were fallible and disobedient. But that shows how smart GOD is, in Heaven there won't be a single unbelievers who are criminals, rapists, pedophiles, murderers, etc, because Heaven is a holy place where no wickedness dwell. The same applies to criminals on earth are normally put away to prison. Hmm just got thinking how we have different levels of punishment in our country and I assume its similar to a lot countries as well? I remember reading Mary Baxter's book on "Divine Revelation of Hell". If her encounter with Jesus is true, then the way she described it was a real like experience of Hell...seem to make sense. Now the Holy Bible only mentions gnashing of teeth and the eternal lake of fire. Mary mentions different levels of punishments in Hell....and the rest is not a happy eternity for any of them. It doesn't matter what level it is, it is going to be eternity in the afterlife. The Lord is still patient with the unbelievers.
