I think I'm part of VaynerNation. The difference to me is that Nation signifies being part of a movement. Vayniac is singular to me. And while I absorb anything I can watch/listen/read from you, I think what you're doing is creating more of a movement of business and marketing people and therefore, we're a nation of Vayniacs. Love the personal brand question. I'm building a 2nd brand/new brand based on the last 10 years of experience in a particular subject matter. I did the work, now I'm creating. Glad you are back. Was busy busy this week, full out but still took a minute to check in for a new show. Great one today. I run hard/hustle...and I love sleep.

I absolutely love Gary's response to personal brand building. I've been caught up in this web of wanting to build a "personal brand" biz, but discovered the MAD TRUTH Gary was speaking about. First build SOMETHING then help others do the same if thats what comes next for you. Way too many "experts, life coaches, business gurus" in this online world these days. Claiming they have the secret to your success. It's gotten ridiculous. The game changer for me was taking Gary's advice of documenting the journey instead of personal branding. Take people on the journey. The struggle, the hustle and all the shit we go through as solopreneurs, content creators, etc. I prefer that approach over personal branding and let's be real....its more authentic than calling yourself a "personal brand" Great video Gary! RESPECT!

Out of all the videos I've ever watched this channel made me believe, in myself, and I thank you for that. It's never too late to start. All you have to do is start. Thanks for everything Gary and your wonderful team!

This video and this feed were super helpful. It's hard when you want to share something with as many people as possible but you're not sure exactly where to start: fear of failure, I guess. I'm 34 and I'm just getting to a point of freedom in that I'm clinging to my humility, but know I've got something of value to give and really am starting not to care about the negative feedback that may come as a result of me doing exactly that. Just have to step outside of yourself, get uncomfortable, and take a leap of faith. Thanks, Gary! This is awesome☺️

A vayniac is someone who watches every video, watches every tweet, every instagram, every snapchat - but does nothing. Someone who is part of Vayner Nation - is walking the walk. I love you Gary and really respect many of your opinions. I do, however, disagree with the notion of someone having to work for 10 years and staying quiet before they can come out and claim to be an expert. Of course a person needs to be working on themselves internally AND consistently executing (taking massive action) to produce results in order to be good at anything in life, but once they're on the right track and headed in the right direction I believe they should share their knowledge with others if it's what lights them up and provides value to others. It's great to be an expert, but sometimes you only have to be a few steps ahead of someone else in your industry to really help them out. You can do this as a life coach, tech entrepreneur, makeup artist or video game blogger and start your own brand by providing value to others because you genuinely want to help them. If they are learning something from you because you're a few steps ahead of them (because you commit to learning everyday, because of your experience, because of your own hustle) then they will benefit from you even if you don't have 10 years of experience in your industry and do not have millions of dollars of sales revenue to show for it. As someone who is beginning, you will have to learn a lot, fail a lot, develop a lot and progress a ton over the years to become an expert, but there's no reason to "stay quiet" for 10 years while you're working on becoming an expert in your industry. I believe the time when you were 22-32 years of age was a completely different era than today in terms of technology, social media and just how darn fast people are able to start up brands, generate traffic, provide value, make sales and gain a following. There are several young entrepreneurs who have started their own brands and have been able to earn 6 figures in sales from $0 within less than 2 years simply because they have some value to provide with their own unique voice and style. On a different note, I love all your content and it helps me tremendously. Thank you for all that you do! Much love. -Wasi

Dude, your answer to the question about personal branding was one of the best things I've heard in a long time. No matter what industry you're in, being humble and realizing the grind is where the branding comes from is the key. Like you've said in tons of other episodes, it's the WORK that gives you the high- the success feels great, but the effort it takes is what sharpens your steel. Top notch mon ami! (Vayner nation member here- I feel like there's a varniack in me, just haven't had enough time to consume all your content. Difference is being a believer in the Ver vs a warrior for the Vee. Getting to warrior status day by day!)

I agree Gary, real personal "brand equity" comes from getting results, not followers. Well known doesn't always equate with well respected. The two can go hand in hand, however, when you provide substantial value to people on a consistent basis.

Citizen of Vayner Nation here. Personal highlight for this week..."talk to NOT down". Great point. Coming from a highly technical field it's something, as an entire industry, we're really bad at. Something I'm trying my best to fix. When I started out I would often hear the phrase "Where there's mystery there's margin", basically saying we can score extra points out of the client because we know more than they do. That's a shitty way to do business but it's the mindset of so many technology companies and it drives me CRAZY. If you bridge the understanding gap for your clients they'll love you forever. Not knowledge, because my knowledge is gained through my personal experience and most of it the client doesn't need, but understanding. I want to help my clients understand why something is good or bad for their event so they can make their own decisions with better information.

It was the right time for me to get into your stuff, Gary. I've been a small-time entrepreneur for 7 years, all my working life no boss. But recently, I've come to terms that it's not my *true* mission in life, which is music - songwriting, performing, composing... Started my music channel this year and it's got me energized to stay up till 4 and 5 in the morning, no joke, this has been going on for months. I actually hate sleep now that I've re-engaged my passion. I mean I *hate* that I have to sleep, I would much rather stay awake for 24 hours a day to engage this state of flow. You're really helping me figure out how to share my music with other people around the world. No matter what you create, there need to be channels for other people find it, and to take part. Thanks for all the great advice you're shelling out for NO charge to us. I've already shared your name with my mom and I hope she watches some of your videos on entrepreneurship in your golden years :)

Love what you are putting out there Gary, no idea which I am regarding your groupies!! But the Q and A format is super, yes you talk to us not at us, I think that only comes from people who honestly do want to see others succeed and from people that remember what it was like to be uneducated and therefore have empathy for their fellow human who is willing to learn. One of my personal favourite quotes is "Don't look down on anyone, and don't look up to anyone either", meaning to me that we are all human and its just the differences of our personal experiences that puts us in different positions... nobody is 'better' than anyone else, we just have different skill sets...

Hey Gary.. You mentioned about the 10 year Silence Period in this video; before actually building a brand and putting a sign: "I made it". However, you also mentioned just recently about DOCUMENTING THE JOURNEY.. My question: Should you put the documentation of the 10 year metamorphosis out there and let everybody see? I mean, there's a lot of self-made people who provide value by sharing their insights, but how about something new: providing value by empathy?

I think that the goal is to show how you did it. And this is to give a unique perspective that people can not get anywhere else, especially in school. It could also help those that are hesitating during their path to success when you show how you struggled to get there. Sometimes we need reassurance that we are just as crazy as everyone else.

Gary.... I LOVED your answer on the last question. I've been thinking about launching myself as a personal brand but one thing was holding me back: What am I going to talk about that's really original and different than the rest? And your answer to this question is actually the stuff I needed to hear to realize that it's just too early. Your straightforward honesty can probably be offending to a lot of people but it cuts through a lot of BS that people (like me) need to hear sometimes. Better to keep executing until it feels natural to be talking expertise about a subject, which will eventually come if you go hard enough. Thanks for inspiring & educating. Keep rocking.

I love how much you value content. I see so many people that seem to have a large social media following or a lot of attention on their websites but their quality is lacking by a long shot. It's like reality tv stars of entrepreneurs. It's hard for me to focus on quality content when it seems like all these people half-ass what they're doing and still get praised for it.

It makes you engage with the author, article or content. building your brand by doing work, hustle, work, work, and let the track record build so you launch as a expert in what you do. I don't know how you do it Gary, but I can feel the authenticity through the screen and love your show 100%. The answer to the last question was solid gold! I am 25 and have been building my experience (which is very harsh at times) in sales and in dating. I am consistently exposed to "rejection" on a daily basis and have the toughest skin when it comes to that. Point being that my expertise level is growing more and more everyday for my brand that I will create soon (written blog version) thanks to reading Crush It! To me, I see Vaynernation as the whole community we have here that follow you for entertainment, value adding and expertise level content to alter our lives. Vayniac? I'd say it sounds like a Maniac who is obsessed with your work, your line of work (social) or obsessed with the show. Just guestimating. Anyways, thanks for everything Gary. Coming to you from LA.

Answer: currently I'm a Vayniac (obsessed about everything you do and the content you're putting out) and hopefully soon I'll make it into the VaynerNation (active member/participant of the brand.) QOTD: I'm VaynerNation in my opinion because I do not engage as heavily as what I think a Vaniac would. HOWEVER my wife would call me a Vayniac because I watch all your shows, bought all your books, watch wine library over and over (I'm working on my WSET certifications and want to validate my palate against the wine varietals). I even engage with the product and marketing people at my office to get their asses over here and start learning the "right way" of doing social media . Today's show length = awesome. 5 question format, just over 15 minutes and detailing of your points makes it valuable for me. I don't have any improvement points to toss out, I got value out of the episode.

A couple of thoughts *****: 1. Not sure if you realize it, but there was a lot of cohesiveness between two of your statements. One statement was about talking to people and not talking down to them. When you do that you approach people from an open stance vs. a closed off one. The other statement was about having the chops to do what you do. These two tie together. The moment you start calling yourself an expert (vs. letting others do it), or start thinking you have nothing else to learn, you cease to have "the chops". I am on company number 6 now (3 exits, two failures) and I get asked by a lot of first time entrepreneurs to have coffee, lunch, dinner, etc. I am always happy to do that, and often times I learn from them as well. Additionally, I am friends with people like you, *****, Jeremiah Owyang, and many others because I still have so much to learn and I know that. A major component of having "chops" is not being afraid to know you are still learning and your word isn't law, it is advice. 2. #Vayniac vs #VaynerNation is easy. Vaniacs are people that followed you on WLTV and that is all they know about you. VaynerNation is comprised of people that have known you through WLTV, Vaynermedia, SxSW, #AskGaryVee, CNN, Bloomberg, yadda yadda. That, my friend, is the difference.

I will never (someone punch me in the face if I deviate from that please) consider myself an an expert. Not just for entrepreneurs, but for anyone that is trying to do something, the last answer is exactly why we have to filter through so much crap these days. Everyone thinks that they could "growth hack" their way to the top and the truth is that the seat at the table can't be bought but has to be earned. And the point that Gary made about those that have the chops is right on. You might have a following and might be recognized by ppl that don't know any better, but to those that it matters to, they don't care about where you are at, but more importantly how you got there.

Leaving a comment after that harsh scolding you gave us, hahaha. To answer your question, I prefer VaynerNation for sure. Loved that point about talking TO not DOWN to. It's also refreshing to hear that you take weekends/vacations off. I admire your career but I hope to be able to do something that gives me work/life balance, at least a little bit :) Love your show, it's helped me out a lot!

One of my favorite episodes yet. I definitely prefer the longer format over the short... As for the QOTD, I consider myself a vayniac. Not sure of the difference but it rolls of the tongue smoother.

As someone who has only been doing this for a year, I agree that it's important to do the work. I have consumed a great deal of info, now it's time to execute. How can I preach social media best practices if I only have two followers. This of course is an oversimplification, but the more experience I have with theory application, the better equipped I am at helping my clients. With that said I do see the value in guest blogging and self promoting. Not maybe as an expert but contributing by sharing my experience. So I wouldn't stop myself from doing things to self promote in the early stages of my brand I would instead focus on positioning.

Agree on the brand opinion. Learning social media to work towards being a social media manager for businesses, and also taking a marketing class from Seth Godin. Learning lots and please keep it coming. I want to build this business the right way and be valuable to clients. Not ready yet...progress daily. Thanks GaryV.

I'm part of VaynerNation. Proud student of the GaryVee way. LOVED this message today. The hustle. The work your ass off, shut your mouth and learn as much as you possibly can. That is how you build a brand. And be kind and write killer thank you notes. Side note, I share a lot of other people's content. I share what I think is interesting, but I try not to overwhelm. I will say you are one of the ONLY high profile people that thanks me on a regular basis. You, Randy Gage, JB Glossinger, Team Forleo, Crystal Payne, Jon Lee Dumas, Screw the Nine to Five- interact and thank. Makes me want to share more of the content from you and them. Hell, even if it's a staff member (which many times it is- but I know you are you) they at least get that it's important to say thanks once in a while. As our brands grow, we remember who said thanks when we were little peeps.

IMO the personal brand answer is b.s. That answer is the answer you would receive from someone in a position of power, someone that makes up rules that the younger generation doesn't follow. Really enjoy the show.

This was my favorite episode - over the top energy, deep on-the-level advice on self branding I more than you can imagine agree with, recharging-time, not taking down to people - loved it. BTW - I never label myself - but just know you bring me great value and it's massively appreciated.

Gary, I really loved this show and appreciated the deep level of answer you gave to each question. With regards to your last major answer on self-branding, I completely agree with the need for young professionals to simply do the work, but you can also start building your personal brand, too, correct? I am a firm believer that most people should have their own website to showcase their skills and accomplishments, as well as an active social account or two (actually used). It's far more effective than a resume, while allowing you more control (show it instead of tell it) over your career trajectory. I agree that it takes time to build up the capital to label yourself an expert, but in the meantime we can all be building up our credibility with the work we do. Any thoughts?

This is by far, the best episode yet. Particularly from ~10:30 forward (the entire show is great, but earning the opportunity to build your own brand is fantastic - that many people dont even consider). Job well done, #AskGaryVee

I really needed to hear that bit about starting your personal brand. I've been struggling to figure out how much emphasis to put on writing an ebook and other things to develop my personal brand since I see so many others doing that exact same thing. Time to put the nose to the grindstone....

VaynerNation represent. Vayniak feels like an obsessive term to me while VNation feels like a name for your fans. Enjoying the 5 questions. And I liked the candy thing from last episode. Impromptu stuff keeps the show feeling fun each time.
