Jay, I asked this question in error on the previous CB irons. How would you compare these WS CB 2024 to the Miz JPX 923 Tours in looks, feel, forgiveness and stats?
@johnatchley9754
@johnatchley9754 Ай бұрын
I’ll say it again, your tests at three different swing speeds and with strikes in different places on the face are absolutely the best by anyone anywhere. They are genuinely useful and helpful for golfers of all skill levels and ages. I will be 83 this month, have played for over 62 years, have a 17.5 GHIN handicap index I am working to bring down, and play forged blades with a 34 degree 7 iron. My swing speed with the 7 was measured with Trackman exactly three years ago at 74.8, ball speed 100.6, smash factor 1.34, launch 22.9, peak 81 feet, spin 5370, landing angle 46.3, carry 137.3, total 146.4. That was my best shot with perfect strike. Now I only have access to an overhead Foresight GC Hawk monitor that doesn’t show club speed. However I estimate my club speed is now down a bit, from 70 to 72 based on dividing ball speed by an estimated smash factor. Admittedly guesswork. But it means your 70 mph swing speed test is the ONLY one out there that enables me to really understand how a given new iron might work for me, at least without paying for a fitting. And your emphasis on descent angle has really helped focus my practicing on what it takes to stop on the green. So just a huge thank you all the way from Rockville, Maryland just outside of Washington DC.

Thank you John for such a kind and detailed comment. It's such a lot of work doing the reviews how I do and it's always nice to hear positive feedback. The beauty with golf is that you can still play throughout life and although the body stops us from playing like we used to, with the help of technology and handicap we can all continue to enjoy it way past the age where other sports have to be stopped. Thank you again for the kind comment 👍🏻👍🏻

Just bought a brand new set of the previous iteration CB's in my spec for $499 shipped. It's an absolute steal. Hit them side by side with the '24 model and the difference in feel is imperceptible to me and I'd bet to most anyone who's not darn near scratch. Cheaper than Takomo, Maltby, Hogan, the new Vice sets, and countless other nice DTC's, but none of those are close to quality of these irons. Some may argue otherwise and to each their own, but I humbly disagree. Wilson Staff irons feel like pure class. I've hit many of the aforementioned DTC's including the Takomo 301CB's, and they're nice, but not like the Wilsons. Not close, actually. I was in PXG 0311P's, Gen 2, and was concerned that the MUCH smaller heads of the Staff CB's wouldn't work for me. I'm a former 2 hcp (long ago) currently carrying a 9.7, which means I can post a 76 or a 92 on any given day, and need a bit of help. I flushed these all day. Not sure why or how. When I was off center or a groove or 2 low the CB's offered surprising forgiveness and weren't as harsh as expected. Moral of the story - if you're in the market for a high quality iron set and want to save a few bucks, there are opportunities out there for under $500 to consider. I suspect these would work for just about anyone below a 15-18 handicap & below.

I’ve gamed the Wilson v6 then the CB and will probably game these ones as well or the staff blades. The two Wilson sets I got I went in with no budget wanting to spend a packet and get some mizuno or Titliest and walked out with Wilson’s both times. The second time I specifically wanted to avoid Wilson just because I reallllly wanted mizunos. But I couldn’t do it. Price aside the Wilson’s had better feel then take into account they are absurdly cheaper then any other brand. It’s actually a no brainer.

I would assume these are very similar (if not identical) to the 2021 model, and i will say that those clubs tell you how good or bad you hit a shot with very little penalty for mishits. Thin shots lose very little carry and roll out more, while toe shots are only losing you ~5% yardage. Heel shots tend to go close to full distance, but that hosel will get you on any sort of bad heel shot, so they definitely favor a toe miss

I have set of blades, Wilson Fg-51, ( not playing these ) still around. The loft of the 7 iron is 38° compared to the 34° of the Wilson CB and the 28° of the Callaway AI smoke. This of course affects the carry lengths, but does that mater? Somewhere the gap stops and you need 6 wedges. Is this a good development? I heard that it was Ping that started this rage when delofting their irons and telling everyone how long their irons were. Even with a slower swing speed and not playing for money, would you not rather have good looking, chrome, iron such as the CB? The handicap system takes care of the score.
@ddream1313
@ddream1313 5 ай бұрын
To a degree, the carry length does matter. When you have a 7 iron that you can hit the length of a 5 iron you now have an advantage. It's easier to hit the 7 than the 5 especially for the average golfer. The only people who have the problem with gap in the bottom of the bag are us higher swing speed players

Forgiveness isn't just about mishits but also turf interaction. The sole seems wider than a blade but not nearly as wide as a D9 forged/T100. Have you tested these on grass & do you think these would be comparable?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 ай бұрын
So you raise a very interesting and valid point about ground interaction and from a forgiveness standpoint it's ground first then ball scenario. Let's take a Dynapower Forged for example, where we have the middle of the road (bounce 5 degrees and 4 degrees in a Blade for 7 iron). If golfer regularly look to deloft into impact, otherwise known as shaft lean, then again commonly the deloft will or at least may completely neutralise any bounce design. In true terms, bounce is rarely used unless you have golfers adding loft at impaft and casting heavily, and hitting the ground first. I those cases hopefully they are seeking lesson go rectify, and in those cases by far, dynamic lie has more effect on contact and ground interaction than bounce 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks very much for the comment, shows great analytical thought 👍🏻👍🏻

All of these would be great options, the biggest win you could have isn't actually the pick between the marginal differences between each of them, but moving your miss from high toe to vertically lower toe, middle toe out even low toe would be preferable. High toe means you are impacting the ground before the ball and this party alone has the biggest effect on your misses 👍🏻👍🏻

The better the ball striker the less they need to consider the forgiveness, and more so how the irons work.
