In this episode, I'm so inspired about what we will be achieving in the future which is to not be a burden for our family. That's the whole point of property investment. Not only we can be independent, there are high possibilities that we can support our future generation to achieve their goals.
As for the audience, I would suggest to move out of the house regardless of a new property or not. For the sake of peace of mind, focus, and privacy. Also I would strongly suggest to move away from the obsession of focusing on auction property as the cost of mistake can be too high.

Responsible parents should build and have their own retirement savings and property asset, and not to rely on offspring to sustain them at old age.

Yup that's what we should be aiming for when we get there. But what will be the solution for now? Being sandwiched by both commitments, no longer working parents with insufficient retirement money n kids demands (plus savings for their future). Seems like looking towards a very dark end of a tunnel.

Can feel the pressure definitely, I had the same thought as my parents are from a very humble background. Not well-educated, little to no retirement savings as they had spent all they made on us. They had little knowledge on financial planning with little money left for them to survive, let alone retirement. With a rather low starting point, I did blame them (I shouldn't have) and often bitter about my upbringing. At one point, about 50% of my income were gone to support my parents. Fast forward to now, after my mum left me forever, and i'm glad that i've done my part to support and sustain her, though it was indeed tough then. Now no money can buy her back. Din, like you said murah rezeki tolong ibu bapa, you've done well and keep up the good works!

I understand your pressure and I think the immediate problem to solve is your personal space. Find an affordable rental to recharge yourself or go staycation during weekends. It will give you a different perspective before you make your decision to get a second house. Owning a second property will divide your attentions because you need to manage it. Make the decision when you have more confidence in your job stability.

Just a short story sharing.... My uncle used to live at kampung. His son and daughter have their own families, some lives in city or stay at kampung. After my uncle retired, he have a saving of RM300k. He retired at the age of 55 and will keep boasting how rich he was to us and cant spend finish his money as he did not have any commitment anymore. (My inner heart voice is like 300k consider rich meh??) His mindset is like... aiyaaaa my son and daughter nonid me feed ady... Sumore they every month they got give me money spend... Nonid work la.. After a few years, all his money spent finish, maybe gamble. Moreover, his health condition getting worse and found out it was cancer stage 4 (passed away already). All he passed down are debts from medical and funeral fee. Not sure is generation or kampung problem, i always heard this incident from kampung or that generation. 🙁

As a parent, you have a ton of time to prepare for your retirement by compounding time and interest from stocks, property, gold, ETFs, etc. Especially if you are a boomer as it was much easier to accumulate and build wealth during their era. Despite all the time and opportunity available, if your best retirement plan is to depend solely on your children's paycheck, you have failed as an adult. Your children are not your retirement plan, likewise your parents are not obligated to pass an inheritance. Be financially responsible pls.

Can observe how our parents treat their own parents. I always feel sorry/pity for my grandparents seeing how they being treated by their children. Is it very bad I always wanted my parents to be treated the same way how they treated their own parents? Let them rasa sikit. But another side of me always has this dilemma feeling otherwise cause I don’t want this toxic thing happen to my next generation. Emotionally drained out 😖😭😤🤯😣😖😩🥺☹️😞😵🤮🤕😮‍💨😪🫨🫥😑 Haha mcm dah out of topic dah 😂

This hits home. I had the exact same thought. But having had some time to think it through, I realize if I don't start the change with myself, it will just be another toxic cycle (as we tend to reflect this to our kids too)... as Sean says, the "true success" for me is also to be able to give our children / future a chance to realize their dreams without having to worry about me when I get old. Good luck to you reading this too!

This topic resonates so much with me and its so sensitive in Asian culture. BUT Not every parent has the financial literacy to plan for their retirement. My mum made a lot of money when she was younger but never knew how to keep them or invest them. It takes only 1 bad “investment” to wipe out all her wealth. I am still blessed to have finish my education with no loans but now she is stuck with a house in penang with her high monthly commitment of 4k. I sometimes wish that she had the financial literacy to make the “right move” so we are not stuck in this burden. Also she really see me as a retirement plan because she “spends the most on me” as a single child it stressful but i would like to take that’s blessed burden 😂

The child cannot choose where he/she is born and who is his/her parent. The couple who bring the child to this world has ALL the decisions. Thus, the burden of responsibility is on the couple , NOT the child. The couple cannot demand the child to feed them or take care of them when they aged. The decision should be determine by the willingness of the child.

Hi Sean, We are thinking of retiring in Malaysia next year, inshallah. My husband is not local so we are thinking about renting an apartment for about 3-6 months while trying to get his paper work ready. Questions - Is that such thing as short term rental?
@avaxis

Never buy a place thinking you can stay or rent it out. Intention must be very clear. Safe play is to buy a subsale positive cash flow high demand rental property that can be easily rented out. It’ll be less stressful than buying new where you need to serve the interest payment before getting keys to rent out. Thereafter rent a landed house to stay yourself as rental is usually cheaper than paying installment for this class of properties.

Sell the house and buy a dual-key unit. One for parents and one for his family. Alternatively, don’t get married and remain single until both parents pass away. Difficult to be sandwich generation. You’ve to be financially well-prepared to take care parents and children.
