She was so nervous but did an amazing job at explaining the importance of learning ASL for deaf babies.

Why isn't this video professionally captioned? The auto-generated captions on KZfaq are not accurate, do not include boundary markers for sentences, and don't include capitalization. Those are all salient linguistic features of written English. These auto-generated captions are not acceptable; and do not accurately represent the spoken message, thus giving Deaf and hard of hearing viewers a different message than the one hearing listeners receive.

Thanks for giving this talk. We need to advocate for the use of ASL. Accesible language is the most important thing to eliminate language deprivation.

The high frequency speech noises on this video are so distracting.

Absolutely love this video for the deaf and hard of hearing people we need to educate. Yes, I do mean educate to hearing people the clock or implants and the hearing aids don’t work it’s language it’s important. Are you hearing people say it’s important to communicate it is not wrong to be Deaf or have American Sign Language. It is not wrong we need to change the peoples opinion. Deaf can be Deaf and have American Sign Language. I am a huge advocate for that.❤

I do agree with this woman in this video. giving people are always making decisions. decisions for themselves to make a decision. it's a good person and please make a Sign Language. sign language interpreting or voicing use American sign language for the deaf. you caring people have the best advantage of you or development. please because I am an American Sign Language person I have an auditory processing disorder with dyslexic. in English, it was hard for me I didn't grow up or a good with English. but. I did learn sign language which helped me with English. and please open-minded people parents stop using Cochlear implants on deaf people that is not the way is to be able to communicate and understand why would you want to take that away from me don't worry about think about what I am deaf or I am hearing think about communication and understanding and please watch this video please think about it deaf and hard-of-hearing people need American Sign Language just like three people have their spoken language to plain and simple as that it's a no-brainer simple don't take American sign language deaf people language away namaste

Aaron W Caisse I am a hard hearing and I have problems with writing also to build structure sentence. I’ve discovered very late and now I am running to a sign language and studying at college with hearing people I find difficult to everyone understand that I can’t hear either understand the way how they do.

It's good for hearing people to hear this, but this video is not Deaf accessible. The comment section could easily be taken over by ableist without the input of the Deaf communities.

Yall realize there is a CC button for captions on this video right. All the comments are about accessibility.... there are captions you just have to press the button.

They are auto-generated captions therefore they include errors and do not accurately represent the speaker's utterances. Inaccurate captions give Deaf and hard of hearing viewers a different message than hearing listeners receive.

Great talk. That said, I find it a bit odd that she consistantly talks as if American Sign Language is the only sign language! ASL is used mainly in the USA and Canada, and people who live elsewhere need to learn their own local sign language.

Geez...I am an educational audiologist living in the same county as the speaker for this Ted Talk...Casie Lucas...and I also provide Early Intervention services within Erie County, PA. I have never heard one medical professional or anyone living here, for that matter, speak poorly about the use of sign language or suggest that families not use sign language with their child with hearing loss (or children without hearing loss). I think this is an old political agenda for the purpose of riling people and sending a message of prejudice...as an audiologist, I always offer signing as well as strategies for families to do whatever communication method they choose...usually it's a combination of talking, listening and sign. Don't we have enough fake issues to deal with right now?

Maybe you should discuss that with Casie Lucas herself. That would be an interesting discussion, don’t you think?

This is not fake outrage this is a very real and pervasive problem. A VERY small percentage of hearing parents, let alone whole families, make the effort to learn their child's language. Even the children whose parents are technically in support of their DHH child learning ASL and receiving ASL interpreting services at school rarely make the effort to learn ASL to communicate with their own child. They treat their children like pets. Sure they provide for their basic needs and could claim some kind of love or companionship but they are unable to communicate on any meaningful level to parent and truly love their child the way that they deserve to be parented and loved.

Interesting video but why is the interpreter on the floor in the dark where it’s hard to see. Why isn’t the interpreter on stage a few feet away in the spotlight? The TED people can do a better job than that.
