I think America is super flawed. The system promotes freedom, but a lot of the time the best way to get something done is following protocol, but the systems that said protocols are in is also fucked so its just all around a shitshow. If the people wanted revenge, they contact the police, but the system is fucked so things like this happen. It doesn't need to be so complex, if the police are trying to arrest someone and that person dies, without said person directly endangering the lives of others, the police should always be held accountable. If someone has gun charges in the past, they aren't directly endangering the lives of others right now. As long as the person is not wielding a weapon (as in its in their hands), cuffing or tasering if they're resisting should always be the protocol and action taken. Now if the person refuses to hand over their weapon, you try to apprehend them with tasers. Also, bodycams should be required for every police officer and if something happens and the cop's camera isn't on, the cop shouldn't be tried as a cop, they should be tried as a normal citizen and charged with obstruction of evidence. Just my take though.

This is why activists have been calling for cops to have more training. The majority of police training that currently exists is firearms training. Very little of it is de-escalation or emotion management, which are crucial in situations like this. We have higher standards of conduct for soldiers, whose job it is to go to other places and kill people - why do we not hold the people who are supposed to be "serving and protecting" to a similar standard? You can call it officers being human and being scared, but training is supposed to at least partially alleviate that. Giving a gun and a badge to a person who spooks easily doesn't make for an effective law enforcement force.

There's been a lot of cases of police officers giving conflicting orders and shoot at people who were trying their best to comply. Officer Lane (the cop whose bodycam footage detailed it all) was heard in the video telling Chauvin to turn Floyd on the side because even he understood that there was an issue with applying pressure to the neck for such an extended period of time. As part of the lawsuit they went through Minneapolis police procedues to see which types of neck restraint are permitted. As part of that they revealed that the only permissable options are conscious neck restraint in which LIGHT pressure is applied to the neck (you are basically not even trying to pressure the neck itself, just keep the restrained person from lifting their head), which was ruled out since Chauvin put a majority of his bodyweight on Floyds neck. And then there is unconscious neck restraint where you do actually apply stronger pressure in order to press down on the arteries in the neck and have the person pass out. If that was what Chauvin was trying to do, then he was doing it in a position that he was never taught in training and regardless of position, when it comes to the time the pressure was applied he was way out of line. Unconscious neck restraint is supposed to be applied for 10-20 seconds until the target passes out. If it does not pass out, then you did it incorrectly and you try again after a delay. There is no scenario in which you just knee on a persons neck for minutes on end. Eventually they were so at their wits end when trying to connect what he did to police procedure, that they called in a MMA fighter as a witness to try and explained who said that what Chauvin did looked like something called a "blood choke" in which you also pressure the arteries in the neck for around 10 seconds until the opponent either taps out or falls unconscious. Even there the information was, that if those 10 seconds lead to neither tapping out nor unconsciousness, then you are applying pressure to the wrong spot and will need to reposition or will be stopped by the ref. Long story short, this was far from just "bad optics". The Minneapolis chief of police agreed with this, Chauvins colleagues that were on the scene agreed with this, medical professionals agreed with this and martial artists agreed with it as well. Not as single person went "Yep, that's how you control a perp. All good."

I'd have to side with Wicker on this one, as the info out there is inconsistent, and seems they went with the autopsy that would make the crowd happy.

Not in my experience talking with people, but that's anecdotal. There are lots of different opinions on different subjects from individual to individual, and it behooves us all to take a more granular approach to how we view things especially when it comes to other people's points of contention. Vocal extremists on both ends of the spectrum distort the reality that most of America is fairly centrist and just loves a good competition and wants to back 'their team' without much more thought than that. The two party system is divisive and can suck a dick.
