Keep in mind that most of the game in ac black flag you weren’t even sailing and boarding ships, that was just a side part of the game that we loved.. still somehow 10x better than this. Either these companies are spending 90% of their time in the break room or they are hiring the cheapest devs they can find. I don’t get it.

They are doing both, and when they are actually developing the game, the vast majority of resources goes into building the market store, DLC content before the game even comes out, cosmetics, and microtransactions.

Meh. Looked like dogshit. Cinematic, yes. But didn't look playable. I think I much prefer Skull and Bones as it looks like you're actually playing and not just watching a series of cutscenes that you start by pressing buttons. I'd rather just watch a movie which will have much better graphics, much better cinematography, much better sound, much better lighting, etc. Everything. Asking for that shit in games is stupid since it'll always either be worse in games or get in the way of actually playing the game. Like how Witcher 3 has you RP walk around a castle and pick out cringe clothes before you can actually play. I just straight up turned that shit off and started some actual game instead.

Black Flag is not an Assassin game. It's literally just a pirate game where they realized near the end of development that they had to still make it fit in the world of Assassin's Creed. They added a bunch of random assassin tailing missions that sucked and some out of Animus stuff that no Assassins Creed fan has ever cared about.

@@maltheri9833 That's why narratively I preferred Rogue, where you play as an Assassin-turned-Templar. Same great gameplay, but on a slighlty smaller scale and more closely tied to the AC story in general.

@@maltheri9833 yeah, you aren't even an assassin, all you know is to copycat what you saw briefly and use a corpses's robe (Lorewise). In the end, it's just a pirate game with the Assassin's Creed brand. But Imma gonna be honest, Black Flag is good in gameplay and most of the story elements that doesn't involve the Assassins.

I made a TI83 calculator game about 25 years ago which had space ship boarding as part of the gameplay. I had mine to adjust heading and speed to match in order to board. Then it goes into time based battle mode having your boarding party battle each section of the ship. Depending on which room you take on made the battle easier or harder. And also had extra loot if you're lucky. I did all this with 20 Kilobytes of space. What the hell is Ubisoft doing?

Ubisoft also shut down all their Assassin's Creed Online servers not too long ago. Which is an absolute bummer, because that shit was a fun derailment from the main game. It hadn't been updated in years, and the servers were still well populated. That just tells you the premise of Assassins assassinating other Assassins with various assassin skils, diversions, tricks, and techniques, all of which are unlocked by playing more online, was an extremely fun concept. And instead of trying to keep it alive they sent it to the fucking guillotine, and right as they were putting their games on sale. Granted, you can still play the campaign. But online was really fun, and I find myself rarely saying that about games. Y'know, because one day you're having fun with your mates. The next they fucking axe the servers and its been 10 years since you and your mates ever talked. Feels nice to invest 20 dollars into heartbreak.

It wasn't overdone, but instead was subtle enough to feel authentic and immersive without being distracting. And yes, I too genuinely could feel my tummy being weird if I played for too long.

The atmosphere in that game is one of the parts that elevated that game above the rest. I barely played it myself, but watched others play it. The one time i did play i was on this random island with a long main path/road with shops down the sides. At the end of it there was the docks where your ships pointed directly up this road, so you had a pretty nice scenic view of the docks, ships, ocean, and everything really. As i explore the town the weather turns into a storm and so i go outside and notice my ship is gone. The weather really turned sour now as it rains hard and thunder strikes constantly. My ship literally rises out of the water due to some bug, but it made the scene so much better. I stand there in awe as the lightning and thunder strikes with rain falling down, shop-signs swinging, trees swaying and my ship rising out of the water to look directly at me. Like the flying dutchman just rose out of the depths

Not only that but you can also commandeer said boarded ships, sell them for profit, gets recognize for the boarding and capturing of said ships, and the economy actually gets affected too if you capture enough of them. Sid Meier manages to create a better and more realistic pirate game while having to battle with the 90s archaic pc system than a "quadruple-A-game" with over 11 years of development time and state-of-the-art equipments and budget. Shit is insane

I know ship fighting system was implemented with AC3 but BlackFlag made it better, instead of being an isolated part of AC3 where you have to switch between. They were able to seamlessly transition between traveling on ships and getting back to land; and vice versa. And it wasn't a cut and dry deal where they leave it after getting ship travel and combat, they even added underwater treasure hunts and fuckin spearfishing that mattered to your character and ship progressions. How TF did they devolved this far back baffles me

0:17 Actually bethesda did make a pirate RPG game on the original XBOX called ''pirates of the carribean'' and it was actually good. You could explore your ship. Attack other ships with cannons OR board them and sword fight to take over a enemy ship. AND you had several Islands to explore, quests to do, a main story. Find booty, hire crew members. That game was made in 2003... EDIT: Bethesda published the game, but it was not Bethesda studios who MADE the game. So not the people who made elder scrolls 3-4-5, star field, fallout 3-4-76

Everyone on the same playing field and the only thing that determines how good you are is your skill and team play. There are tons of rare items to show off, you don't need to have advantages over other players to have fun dude.

This game should have been the easiest home-run in the history of game development. They already had the engine, the mechanics and the assets from Assassin's Creed: Black Flag/Rogue, after all - just polish those to shine, expand the slightly underbaked elements like trading and fleet management and, bam, you're done, game of the year. Any halfway-competent studio could have shoved that out in a year or two from a basis *this* strong. But, alas, Ubisoft...

Black flag was my first assassin’s creed game and what I also recognize it as my first pirate game so man… whenever I come back to it realize how that game(especially for the era it came from) was built to age like a fine wine with well thought out game mechanics and a satisfying game loop with the ship system… so when skull and bones takes the foundation of those mechanics and doesn’t improve but in fact removed mechanics since the 11 years black flag came out it’s alarming.

They had the opportunity to go GUNG-HO with a AAAA pirates game. We could have had famous sea monsters, Davy Jones’ locker, ship battles, lush beautiful jungle islands, engaging swordplay, muskets, deep sea diving, buried/hidden treasure, fleets to command, legendary pirates to meet, legendary ships to commandeer, fun bar fights, pillaging opportunities, the British Royal Navy on your tail, etc. It’s sad that most of that is in an Assassins Creed game, about ASSASSINS… and not a Pirate game… ABOUT PIRATES. Black Flag was ahead of it’s time (gameplay wise). Still a treat to pop in, and play for hours.

20 years ago we had a game called sid meier's pirates, where once you boarded a ship you would enter a duel, but you would see up top your crew's numbers and the enemy's crew numbers start going down as both crews fought too, so if the duel took long enough one of the crews would be killed enough that someone would auto lose the duel due to losing the battle of attrition.

@@Fr00stee Origin is super-solid. Odyssey was liked... but not by AC fans. Although many RPG fans also don't like it. But it's definitely poppin in casual circles. Valhalla has a fantastic story that is ridiculously stretched out which ruins all pacing and makes a great 14 hour game a mediocre 50 hour campaign somehow. I enjoy because I love norse stories but it could have been much better. Just so avoidable stuff that clearly came for market and sales not because the game needs it.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men's Chest on the Gameboy advanced allows you to board ships and kill the crew and steal the goods. A Gameboy game, lets you shoot at enemy ships, damage them to the point of no sails, board them, kill the crew, steal the goods, then escape before the ship sinks. Oh and when you escape the ship, you can watch it go down. All on a Movie Tie in game on the gameboy advanced from like 2006

*Pirates of the Caribbean Online* was the best Pirate/Online Pirate game ever made. Honestly I think under an actual gaming company and properly ran, that game could return and would easily be in the top 10 MMOS. Even if someone just took the base formula and made a cross of POTCO and Black Flag for an Online Game it would be a massive success Medieval/Pirate Games are always pushed off as Niche but are one of few categories that stay relevant and enjoyable for all ages from kids to old people and as such have a relatively timeless life span when managed/executed properly. it'd be nice to see more free roam/MMO versions of them

As someone that has been in the industry over 10 years, the new graduates aren’t taught efficient assets creation. Just quick and easy asset creation. This has resulted in lower quality games despite having more technical resources to work with. Everyone is building their characters and assets at the highest resolution and using auto-downgrade programs. Whereas in the past you’d make the art and assets for the lowest platform and build them up.

I mean, just play some old games. Not the Classics, but all of the other ones. Even though they have their place, Zelda 2, and Super Mario Bros 2, were kinda duds regarding gameplay. (I love Zelda 2 btw, but only once I was able to play with an emulator) People talk about how the older games were better, but that's only because they've been filtered. Nobody remembers the bad games (for good reason). Nostalgia is a drug, but it's important to build off it without regressing.

So, tldr on this games development, it was made by ubisoft and funded by singapore in a deal where it was contractually obligated to come out so they couldn't cancel it. The real problem is that the singapore office was basically used as a vacation spot or a place to ship the SA people until the news forgot about them. It was supposed to be a way for singapore to start entering Game Dev, which didn't happen because none of the locals ever got a chance to move past basic programming or qa.

@@b.t4604 It's a combo of both. If you hire cheap talent or DEI hires. you pay less for the actual production and you get more in loans and subsidies. Then you can skim a lot of the top and pocket most of the budget while still delivering a working title. DEI hires can also inflate the budget, if you continuously have to redevelop modules in the software... because of fuckups.

Are you saying on a technical level it couldn't be done? Come on. You think the NPCs can't be synchronized between players? It's actually very easy, you can have "canned" animations and pre-determined positions for where groups of NPCs are fighting. It doesn't have to be all dynamic. Around 20-30 "canned" fights are probably enough, if you randomize some of the locations on them. The server only needs to know the initial configuration to send to all players engaged in it. And this is just ONE example. I'm sure smarter people than me who have worked with networking can come up with better solutions. Nah, friend. This is just laziness. *Or very poor management decisions.* Because I don't think the devs were incompetent, I think management imposed some shit rules and rushed it out the door before the contract with the Singaporean government ended (which would have meant a lawsuit from which Ubisoft would have never financially recovered).

The fact that they couldn't even produce a better *looking* Pirate game over a decade after they published Black Flag... Black Flag is an amazing game, I don't think anybody would pick Skull and Bones over it tbh. Maybe the amount Black Flag sales from this point on will be more than the total number of sales for Skull and Bones.

bro Pirates of the Caribbean Online (goat) used to let us PvP ans PvE with more immersive ship mechanics than these. You'd board and fight it out and had plenty of legendary ships and methods to bring people down like damaging sails etc And most islands etc were full instances with quest lines and dungeons and so forth *.. and that game died out before this one even started getting worked on ☠️☠️*

There is a ancient 3d game called "Sea Dogs" made by russian developers in sweaters released back in 2000 (24 years ago) that kickstarted the whole modern FPS/3PS pirate games. Lo and behold you can watch that game videos and it has better game mechanics and sea/storm physics that Skunk and Balls released in 2024.

There are two other pirate games from the 80s and 00s Sid Meier’s Pirates! 1987 & 2004 which are much better than this piece of shit “AAAA” Game.
