I would rather assimilate Arthas with United States in the '45 when they dropped the nuke in Japan. It killed people, destroyed homes, but in the end it stopped WW2. And as Asmon said with the 100 people that are gonna die and turn into undeads and kill more people, the same would have happened if US didn't drop the bomb. Japan wanted badly to extend and dominate the lands around them and murder hundreds of thousands or even millions.

This left out some of the shady stuff he did in Northrend before finding Frostmourne. - His soldiers wanted to leave from the harsh conditions and seemingly endless goal of fighting off the undead, so he hired mercenaries to secretly burn down his ships so they couldn't leave. - He then blamed and killed the mercenaries when his soldiers found out. So it definitely was an obsession.

it would have been worth the sacrifice from a utilitarian standpoint if he could end the plague,. But from a hindsight point of view that could never have happened as the dread lord was ultimately not the mastermind behind it.

@@tylerd80495 Oh for sure. Going there was a poor choice he made out of rage, even if it was somewhat justified. He would have been much better off gathering up the Paladins who at least had some experience in dealing with the undead first. ( Guldan used Undead death knights back in the first war and was why Paladins became a thing in the first place ) Much of Arthas faults come from his short temperament and stubbornness. The fact he was quick to anger and action and never consulted with anyone once he set his mind to things was what doomed him in the end even if he always had good intentions. I just wanted to point out that he did the best could out of it even if that massively backfired on him and was very much morally grey... But you know... what can you expect when you walked into a trap like that...

@MegaHuntress

@@PoorEdward *But that is exactly the point* . He *WAS* a hero to his people. Virtue is based on morals, and morals are based on your ideology. The definition of the Utilitarianism ideology is that " *the end justifies the means* ". So as long as his actions bring the most happiness to the largest amount of people that is the morally correct choice even if that includes lies and murder. The classic example is to go back in time to kill baby hitter to save the jews. killing one baby would theoretically save millions of people by killing one person. And thus its not morally wrong to kill Hitler. From a Utilitarianism point of view, Most things Arthas did was for the greater good of his people *as far as he knew at the time* . Both the burning of Stratholm and betraying his mercenaries at Northrend would have saved more lives. Thus it would have been the morally correct choice.

When people say something is morally grey, they aren't necessarily speaking the language of logic. What they mean is that when a morally good action makes you, as an individual, do something that doesn't instinctually feel right (like killing 100 people) it's considered morally grey. @Lycan neither is sargeras, but the ends do not justify the means. Sargeras has no problem destroying entire worlds to stop the voidlords. Same way arthas has no problem slaughtering countless individuals and helpless children to, stop the plague and malganis. I believe if arthas wasn't so set in his ways and didnt cull strath. Then I could believe he was a good person. But good people will not harm already suffering ppl. Even if it was the right choice it's still the worst one.

@@lectan1514 There is a difference between sacrifice and desire. He said he would bare any curse if it would save his people but that would be the equivalent of someone saying they would kill their loved one if it saved them from death. Arthas wouldn't do the right thing and in any givin situation he would let his desire to do what HE thought was right, rather then listen and take the advise from his most trusted advisors. He was a selfish egotistical prick. Who never once cared about forming a plan or listening to more experienced individuals who could of come up with a way to save everyone without killing them. Remember how the ashbringer was purified into the holy weapon it is today? I believe the same could of happened to the scourge if only arthas wasn't so brash and on his high horse of being king. In truth he was a powerhungry murderer, who only wanted what was he thought was best and only him. So Arthas, Sylvanas and every "human" look NPC (exclude the undeads) was normal people who got kill or taken their soul and resurrect as Death Knights (only his body). Is like the final fight with arthas in ICC. When you got kill he want to resurrect you as a champion of the scourge So death knights were puppets of the Lich King but they got free because they were to "evolved" or "intelligent" to control them and requires more power and they get back their souls but now have the power to control the force of the scourge.

And with the new bastion cinematic, it makes even more sense. Devos knew that arthas would likely not get sent straight to the maw since Arthas the MAN wasnt the real evil, it was frostmourne and the helm of domination. People are asking why her and Uther had to throw him in the Maw themself, when it should have just happened anyway. But it probably WOULDNT have happened. The Arbiter would have probably sent Arthas to Revendreth to atone. But they circumvented that and threw him in the Maw, breaking the engine of Death, and causing all the problems. So Im gonna go out on a limb and say we have to rescue the "good" Arthas from the Maw in shadowlands.

Let's get something straight. Nerhzul is the one true Lich King. Arthas was merely his vessel. The Lich King led Arthas to Frostmourne and the curse to wield the sword took nearly all of his soul. When he put on the helm of Domination, Nerzul merged with that small amount of humanity that was left of Arthas soul. That's what kept the undead from taking over Azeroth. So Uther really fucked up in his rush for justice. And the other thing is, Anduin might actually be the son of Arthas and Jaina =) See the parallels?

he did alot of things wrong. First, even if the purge was necessary, he could talk uther into it or atleast explain, why he had to kill them all. Secondly: There was litterly no need to chase after malganis, he purged stratholme, malganis fled to nothrend, he saved his land. His only goal (to kill malganis) was revenge, which is objectively wrong to seek as a king. Then he hired mecenarys and blamed them for destroying the ships, which were send to bring him back home and condemned his people to death=no ships means no way to go back. Muradin warned him about the curse, about the price he had to pay and he still did it, not to protect his people, but for selfish reasons (revenge). So yea a lot of objectively wrong decisions he made.

Destroying his ships is like condeming them to death, you can't just build ships, you need material, people who know how to build them and time. Remember he was in a frozen land, not many trees, probably no one with him, who knows how to build ships. To build that many ships takes a loong time, they will run out of food etc. Muradin told him he would lose his soul, sacrifice everything he has and he still took it, not to save his people, it was never about saving his people, it was all about revenge. His friend litterly died before his eyes and he didn't even have the decency to bury him... So yea, sorry but arthas had many flaws.

Why yes, Jaina and Uther should've killed Arthas where he stood as he stood for certain death on their own people and he indeed abandoned them both as much as they did in kind, but also, no, Billy, his actions were his own and very to the contrary: The purging was absolutely unnecessary. Arthas acted out of fear and very likely killed more than the plague would have otherwise, he had no knowledge of who had actually ate the grain, and they could've stationed troops over contained civilians in case they did die to the plague so they could be dispatched before becoming undead. This is just objectively true. It's how it's written. The culling of Stratholme is not written to be a righteous act of preventative measures, it's written as it was,to show Arthas for the imperfect paladin Uther said they all were, in his fear-driven passion he became the plague itself, it was little more than a desperate move by a frightened insecure little boy in golden plate armor with a face that had seen 20 silver spoons before he was born doing what he possibly thought needed to be done but only coming from a place of fear and uncertainty, nothing about what he did was pragmatic in the slightest, it was motivated entirely by emotion, there was no longer good intentions in his heart, what was in his heart was fear, and it clouded his better judgement. There is no justification, there is no he walked the hardest path of righteousness for the greater good, for what he did was worse than what two scourges could've done to Hearthglenn or what 50 scourges could've been doing to Brill or Lordaeron itself while he smashed little boys and girls brains in with a hammer in the name of saving his people, which in the end he could not accomplish. It didn't take Frostmourne to turn Arthas into a monster. And believing that it does robs the cradle, Arthas is a good character because he made these grave mistakes and because they resonate so well with his character AFTER becoming the Lich King, and ultimately because it resonates with Sargeras, leader of the Burning Legion who created the Lich King and the Scourge for the same purpose that Arthas Culled Startholme: to "save" everyone by killing them.

He furthermore charged them all with treason for being capable of reason when he was not. And how would he even know who ate the plagued grain? "Doomed to die" By whose determinations? Only Arthas'. How many of the innocent people he murdered were potentially not even infected? More than would've died if they'd just waited out for a cure in quarantine until they had to slay the undead creatures that would rise with their obviously superior numbers? And just to go back to his precious army men. He burned their ships down later so they couldn't follow the king's orders and lead them straight to their needless death regardless. He did this knowingly and before any influence of Frostmourne, and worse he wouldn't even own up to it when they saw the ships burning, he framed others who had been helping him for what he had done so he could trick his own people into dying for a cause he knew fuck-all about. I was willing to compromise and say it's a really gray area, but having to say it all, it was all wrong, stupid, honorless, a rash decision of a weak and desperate man who should've known better when everyone who ever loved him turned their back to his needless slaughter, not even Arthas would say what he did was the right thing to do, all we can say is that he atleast believed it to be the right thing to do.

@@Gloom_Shroom_GamingHe chased Mal'ganis to northrend with his army but his men started to lose faith of surviving in the icy hell and king Terenas requsted Arthas and his men to return after getting informed by Uther. Arthas got so desperate that he hired mercenaries and took down the ships so that his men can't return. When his men had arrived he accused mercenaries of taking down the ships and killed the mercenaries. You should play warcraft 3 or read the book. I'm sure that the entire Silver Hand along Uther, Jaina and Arthas working together would've been enough to quarantine Stratholme. Arthas was more worried about the people of Stratholme joining Mal'Ganis than the threat of their forces as the undead.

This video has more relevance now than when it came out after the Bastion Afterlives trailer came out. Uther only saw from what he could of on surface and not even that paragon could fathom the idea of anything but an agent of the jailer because they played right into his hand, you activated the jailer's trap card and put things in motion leading to his rise of power. This is why the Shadowlands needs our help when if the Arbiter was able to do its job he probably would of went to Revendreth to atone for his many sins....thanks Uther the Moron.

If by chasing you mean doing a suicide charge with your army after the enemy flees from your territory and hiring mercenaries to destroy the means for your troops to return home just so they lose hope of making it out alive of the expedition and fight to the death (and them killing the mercenaries) then yeah pretty nice guy.
