There was a man on the show who who was constantly abused by his wife. She sent him to the hospital on multiple different occasions. When he tried to run, she would chase him. Dr.Phil told him that he need to man up, and it was his fault he was being abused. That’s when I stopped watching Dr.Phil.

When they talked about the dad passing out after he got angry, I've seen this before. My father was a psycho ex-marine who used to beat the crap out of me. every once in a while, he'd just drop to the floor and be out cold for a while. He got diagnosed with Diabetes and that's what caused it. he got his diabetes under control and now he can flip out and beat people up without passing out. A true story of medical success.

Man I respect my dad so much for not having any problem with me gaming as long as I did good in school and did my chores and didn't act like a fool. I also had to earn every system and game he bought me. My dad didn't and still doesn't give a fuck if I play games all day as long as I earned it. He taught me respect and responsibility when gaming. Something parents these days need to learn

The fact that the parents choose to take the kid and put him on national television rather than just confiscate the gaming systems is REALLY TELLING.

As a parent that was raised by a marine. You can definitely punish your child and make it very unpleasant without laying a finger on them or raising your voice.

Just to note, the camp he went to was likely an extremely abusive wilderness camp based in the Troubled Teen Industry -- the fact that he got out after only 9 days is a stroke of luck because there are people who end up in facilities like that until they are 18 and sometimes even older.

In almost every single one of these cases the parents are either abusive/neglectful or enabling. The enabling parents are doormats for the kids rage while the abusive/neglectful parents act like they're innocent. It's like clockwork

If this were real, the most probable reason he’s like this is because they let him game all he wanted so he would leave them alone. whenever something broke or he threw a fit for the newest thing they bought it so he would leave them the fuck alone. They noticed this was becoming a problem when it was too late, gave up and went to dr Phil so they wouldn’t have to deal with him.

My brother in law is very similar to the kid. In his teen years he was just as horrible, but more verbally and emotionally abusive without the physical force. It begun shortly after his dad passed away when he was 12 years old. His mom (an incredible, amazing, kind, and smart woman) tried so hard to get him to go to school and finish it. People at church stepped in and helped tremendously, but he just didn't want to do anything, he refused to see any therapists, and was in the verge of being kicked out, until he finally "broke" his mom. He's 23 now, still lives at home, and he had some tough epiphanies, and is slowly mending the damage he's made, but at least there is some hope in the end. No matter how dim it is.

I had an issue between when I graduated from college and started working where I was like this kid. For me, it was depression. My parents didn’t buy me many video games, so I got them through odd jobs. I think it helped because I had to get my stuff on my own and it made me be more self-reliant. Got a better job, bought my own car and rented an apartment. I’m way behind where I should be for my age, but I still game and my depression is much better. The parents just need to stop enabling him. My parents were supportive without being enablers.

I have an 8 year old son, I can say that as a developing mind its up the the caregiver to provide boundaries and alternatives to tech. Its hard if you only rely on tech, but giving them the opportunity to craft , create, and manifest somthing into retreat real life is what they are searching for in games. They get to control the environment. Me and my wife found amazing progress from clay sculpting, painting mini figures. Dioramas , painting and over all crafts. I am no artist but we learn together. I find parents simply give up to easily because it takes away from. They're personal time.

My dad is the most respectable (and respectful) person in the world in my eyes, my parents are the pillars of our family and I’m just so happy that I got them as parents. My sister and me lived in foster care for like 4 years before our mom could take us back. Turned out, her new husband was really into beating me while he was drunk. And my new classmated didn't like the new guy. So my only escape was my PC. I was getting better at games, and worse on social skills. Now I am really afraid to talk to any other human. If some of you ever get into a similar position, do not hesitate to call for help. Or just become brave enough to get new friends.

In 90% of these cases it comes down to a bad household. The dad's abusive, absentee, and has health problems, and the mom sounds like she's been passive for a while. Her health problems don't excuse that.

I think people forget gaming can be a powerful form of escapism, similar to how drugs or alcohol can be. If someone who enjoys games has a spiraling awful home life, there is a good chance they will become addicted to the games as a form of escaping. His parents seem ill equipped, neglectful and abusive, and who knows what else might of happened at home or at school. I feel like it was really just being used to escape.

I work with kids like this. While kids are responsible for there actions and they make these choices, it's almost always caused by the parents not being adequately equipped to being an affective parent. I have dealt with parents pulling kids out of my facility against our doctors advice. It's heart breaking...these kids deserve better.

Hard to expect the kid to step up and be responsible when you never taught him responsibility from the beginning.

The 9 days part is pretty comical, but in fairness, after the Catch Me Outside girl blew up, she talked about a lot of the abusive shit that happens at that "camp". The kid might be developing into a PoS, but that doesn't detract from the fact that Dr. Phil's camp probably needs to be shut down

Maybe the kid is extremely depressed. I went through a similar phase of my life. My parents hated me(they actually do but that's a long story) I was bullied and had zero friends or positive outlets in my life. Video games were my only escape, until my parents threw me on the streets when I was 14.

Children NEED an opposing masculine figure to rebel against and to correct socially incorrect behaviour, and when this doesn't occur with the father, the mother takes on this role. Sometimes the mother is capable of providing sufficient authority, most cases this doesn't happen. The obvious statement beating your child is not a good form of parenting aside, when your son doesn't respond to violence, what do you do? Any rational-minded person can come to better conclusions than these parents. These are some statistics I've seen online regarding single-mother homes, from studies conducted in the west. The following are attributed to children of single-mother homes in the west: 63% of suicides 90% of homelessness/runaways 85% of behaviour disorders 80% of convicted rapists 71% of highschool dropouts 80% of youths in prison It is incredibly important to have a good father figure in your life. I do not blame just the father in this video, but there is reason why fatherlessness warrants significantly higher chances of negative outcomes for children.

Im similar actually. Although it brought me closer to my mom, she didnt care how much i played as long as i stayed out of trouble. I never broke controllers or anything. But i did drop out to play, went back for GED several years later. Now me and my mom has worked the same job for 2 years twice (2 different jobs) so 4 years total working together. I think games are a great thing especially in drug addictive house holds and bad environments.

This is sadly relatable. Everybody miss understanding the situation at the first instance. The dad being an abusive piece of shit and either refuses to or simply does not understand the people he lives with. He does not know why his children don't want anything to do with him and blames it entirely on their escape (videogames) and tries to control them like a piece of shit making their addiction worse. Whilst the mother enables them since they are trying to make the child feel better without dealing with the core of the problem as they might not entirely be aware of the complete picture. Then the cycle continues without anything moving forwards only getting worse. The only way to resolve the issue is to then communicate and make small steps forward in order to develop more healthy habits and to diss-impower the abuser so they get no satisfaction to at least control the situation better. Which in turns helps the videogame/drug/alcoholic, addict recover since the core of the problem is no longer in control. Thereby freeing up their mental capacity from escape to recovery mode. Only to wait for the powder keg known as the abuser to blow up on account of them loosing control and all you can do is take steps before that happens in order to still be able to move forwards with life.

I feel so bad for this poor child. An abusive father with health problems and a crippled mother so he just wants to escape the cold harsh realities of his world in video games and when the parents decide to send him to the camp and the kid agrees they pull him out because "he was cold".
