Follow Senior Textile Conservator Susana Fajardo as she works on a cloak worn by Vivien Leigh for her performance as Cleopatra in Shakespeare's play 'Antony and Cleopatra', at the St. James's Theatre in 1951.
Sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower has documented Susana’s meticulous steps using ambisonic sound, letting us get closer to the object than ever before.
Watch as Susana uses the cold poultice technique to remove folds and creases in the cloth 'feathers' of the cloak, carefully utilising moisture and glass weights to relax the fibres.
Conservation process:
Examining the costume: 00:11
Explaining the cold poultice technique: 01:08
Preparing layers: 01:33
Cutting and spraying blotting paper: 2:00
Placing 'sandwiches' between the 'feathers' and adding the glass weights: 02:39
Creating a chamber to trap moisture: 04:12
Vivien Leigh wearing the cloak: 05:54

I can't believe I'm correcting a V&A video, but the photograph at the end is from Shaw's "Caesar and Cleopatra" not Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra". Olivier and Leigh performed both plays alternately in 1951. You can tell which play it is by the makeup: Olivier is aged to play Caesar and Leigh's lips are pouty, for a more youthful, naive appearance. (In the play, the aging Caesar teaches the teenage Cleopatra how to be Queen.) For "Antony and Cleopatra" Olivier was young and virile and Leigh's Cleopatra was slightly older and wiser. As she got older, Leigh used the artificially plumped lower lip trick to excess. (And needlessly, I might add, as she was never less than stunning.) I can't enjoy some of her later films because all I want to do is reach up onto the screen and wipe off half her lipstick!

It's wonderful to see how much love and attention this fine woman puts into the care & restoration of these art/costume pieces. My grandpa was an actor in Hollywood from 1918-1930's. So these old pieces being restored and given respect with all the hard work put into them makes me so happy. I worked with textiles & make art at home. I know how much work goes into these pieces and it is a heck of a lot of work. Much more than this short description. Great video and she has such a gentle kind voice. Hope they continue to make more videos.
