To clean the yellow stitching use a toothbrush and washing up liquid in the same manner you would use a toothbrush with toothpaste. Once you have worked up a good soapy layer leave it for about 10 minutes then rinse off under a running tap.

I recommend the same. Conditioners contain oils will will resist dye from absorbing properly and can make the color hazy and splotchy. It makes more passes necessary for color fast. I typically apply two coats of Fiebings directly after the fine sanding so the color goes deeper and richer. After it dries, then I begin conditioning to regain something similar to the original luster.

I kept wondering why he didn't do that step before the Renovateur, just an oversight? Of was he trying to create the original look where it would patina brown overtime?

Really quite sad. I see people at my job who complain about their leather boots cracking and whatnot. The newer generation has become so used to sneakers and other shoes that require zero care and maintenance it would seem.

Hard to generalize, I have 2 pairs of Docs that I bought in London while I was in college. So either 1994 or 5. Neither have ever left my shoe rotation. The soles are worn down, but the uppers look great save for a few scuffs and scratches. No resto work done on them save for polish every so often. Just my experience. Can't speak to the longevity of the majority of them now, which are made in Vietnam or SE Asia...

I find the classic made in England ones crack but I got some made in Vietnam with full grain Argentinian leather uppers that are lasting so well.

New ones have the plastic coating which cracks at the toe crease after like a year. So they can’t really wear since it’s plastic in the outside.

Crap leather ?

I just bought Renovateur/Creme D'or/Pate De Lux for my own Docs. Mine are Made in Englands so they're a bit more expensive than the average pair, but the trio was about 70$ after tax. The rags are just cotton and you can use old tshirts as do many boot enthusiasts. My saddle soap I purchased for my Red Wings was about 12$ and the brush was maybe around the same? Decent shoe trees are around 20$, so all in all you'd probably spend around 110$ or so? Not bad for keeping your leather healthy and happy! That said, Saphir is absolutely not necessary for boot care and you can get a boot cleaning routine for around 30-50$, to be honest.

But if I want the exact same pair of Docs I bought in the 90's then I am highly unlikely to be able to find originals, therefore the shoes to me become priceless. The products are like cooking ingredients. It's an investment up front but will last a long time.

What are the most common? I'm genuinely curious. Only one I'm familiar with is the Nike SFB. I'm sure that's a competitive segment.

Laundry powder mixed 50/50 with water to make a thin paste, use with a toothbrush to clean the stitching, then go through with just water to wash away the detergent, dry with a cloth. This trick removed a tonne of wax polish from an old pair i got second hand.

@@welshrarebit9238 i mean it didnt do that to me, and its not a regular clean that you do, its usually just for restoration. Let me put it this way, do you not wash your clothing with detergent because youre afraid your clothes will fade? Or do you wash with detergent because your clothes are stained and ittle only fade after multiple years of washing so its not a problem

Toothbrush and liquid dish soap works wonders on mine
