What I always find the most interesting and disturbing is how dirty cables can be. Or rather how much dirt they collect. Holding a alcohol wipe in your hand, making a fist and pulling the cable through removes a worrying amount of dirt. For cleaning I usually fully disassemble the controller. And then dip all the plastic pieces and butfons in warm soapy water a d give them a good scrub with a toothbrush. It's a long process butt worth it, also relaxing. Stuff looks much better afterwards. I especially do it, if it is from someone else and not something I owned from day one. Rather than use a metal pick that can scratch the plastic, I use wooden tooth picks for those small spaces. On PS2 and 3 controllers especially on the letters for R/L 1&2.
