Finance guy here! What happened in the big short? Before 2008 anyone could get a mortgage, banks didn't care much. So they gave sub prime mortgages, which are high risk mortgages. These mortgages were given with high interest rates, so banks were happy (If people didn't pay, they foreclosed; if people did pay banks profited a lot due to the high interest. One of the lines of business of the banks is to create packages of mortgages and sell them to investors, in that case investors get the monthly payments. These packages of mortgages were tranched from safest to riskiest, from AAA+ (super duper safe) to B- (risky af). With so many high risk mortgages, the packages that were said to be extremely safe were extremely risky. It got to a point that people couldn't pay their mortgages, and everything collapsed. Institutional investors that had paid billions of dollars for mortgage packages were left unpaid, and even though they tried to foreclose the value of those properties was not high. This created the 2008 housing crisis. Welp, and what's a short? There are two ways of selling stocks in the stock market, one of them is going long (buying and then selling, what people do the most) and the other one is to go short. Going short involves borrowing stocks (or other securities) from a stock lender, to give them back in a future. How does it work? I borrow from a stock lender and pay a commission while I have the stocks. Once I get the stocks i sell them, and when they drop value I buy them again and give them back to the stock lender, paying the borrowing fees. If the stock value drops, I make money. For example: I borrow 10 stocks, in that moment the stocks are 100 each in the stock market. I sell them for 1k (10 stocks *100 dollars each). Stocks drop to 50 each, so I buy 10 back for 500. I made 1k - 500 = 500 in profit. If the fees are 100, i pay those fees and my net profit is 400. That's what these guys did in the big short, they shorted millions and millions of dollars, and they almost lost everything as the market was going up (Stressful af in the movie, as they had to pay quotas when the market was rising). Once the economy crashed, they made billions of dollars (remember, the more the maket falls, the more money you make when shorting). Amazing asmr! I had a blast when you started talking about that movie lol!
