These carburetors come from a Kawasaki GPZ 900R (the first Ninja) and today they're getting a thorough rebuild and restoration.
If you're interested in some carburetor educational and instructional content I have plenty of that too:
How to replace float valves on carburetors
• How to replace FLOAT V...
How to disassemble and clean carburetors:
• How to clean MOTORCYCL...
How to install a carburetor jet kit:
• How to install a MOTOR...
How CV carburetors work:
• How CARBURETORS and cv...
/ d4a
teespring.com/en-GB/d4a-merch
The goal of this video is to be an ASMR-ish relaxing video. I don't really do ASMR videos so I don't have the microphones and other gear for it to be a true full-fledged ASMR video (also I'm not a cute girl willing to flaunt her cleavage which seems to be an ASMR requirement too). But I think it will definitely be relaxing for someone who's into mechanical things, rebuilding them and the like. I mean I did this and I found it relaxing to watch the video afterwards. There's no talking. There's no music. Just a guy rebuilding carburetors.
A few important notes to consider. This video does not show the full process of what I did. I didn't show the removal of the jet needle collars and I didn't show me soda blasting the carburetors. To remove some of the stubborn dirt and grime that was stuck in hard to reach places I had to soda blast them. Unfortunately I couldn't show that process as it happens in a box and it's impossible to film it. All you see are clouds of soda smoke. I didn't show a bunch of other small boring sequences.
These are Keihin CVK 34 mm carburetors. These are simple and well made very reliable carburetors. You can find them on several dozen different bikes including the Kawasaki KLE250, KLX, KLR, GPZ 500, BJ250, even on some Arctic Cat snowmobiles, and hundreds of other motorcycles and ATVs.
The process in the video involves disassembling and inspecting the carburetors and throttle plates. If everything checks out. All the jets are removed and cleaned with carburetor cleaner and compressed air. Every possible hole and orifice of the carburetors is also cleaned with carburetor cleaner and compressed air. If you want, at this point you can paint the carburetors and any brackets. After this gaskets are replaced and sprayed with silicone spray and jets, float valves, float bowls and top covers are installed. Don't forget get to check the float height. I also went a step further and decided to replace all the Philips head screws with allen bolts. I highly recommend this as Philips head bolts are always found on carburetors from the factory, but they get stripped really easily and honestly don't belong on anything other than cheap alarm clocks.
A very special thank you to my Patron:
Daniel

New Content! Wow! The Automotive community channels needs more of this. I mean whose Petrolhead that _doesn't_ like the sound of the nuts, and screws being unbolted? I'm surprised that these types of ASMRs are that really silent. They're really impressive! Because, meanwhile, every damn work... I'm Head boiling, yelling and shouting every 5 seconds because of where did my stupid damn 15mm and 10mm went.

An ultrasonic cleaner does nice work on the small parts too (harbor freight). You can get an ultrasonic cleaner from china that is large enough to fit the whole carburetor in (ebay). Wonderful video. You can also get viton o-rings from mcmaster carr that will fit for the needle valve and other locations. Little cracks in that needle valve o-ring just messy things up.

Thanks for the vid. It is awesome to see. thought carb cleaner ate rubber gaskets, so I always remove them prior to cleaning up the metal. leaves me with a problem of how to clean the rubber bits though.... Also found that wadded up aluminum foil does as good a job as abrasives, and is less likely to leave debris in the micro passages. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome video man. I can't believe I have missed your upload by so much. But it did somehow give me some new, and most importantly, useful informations and I hope I would be able to use the knowledge in a carburetor rebuild that I wanna do. It would be a single carb, but a 2 barrel Solex 32-34 13z which is a little more complicated. I have rebuilt old motorbike carburetor maaany times, but this one is going to be more of a trouble I guess. Also the parts for it are pretty rare now! Leave alone any guide on how to nor anything.

Startron from the Walmart boat section every winter storage will prevent this old fuel mess. Leave the petcocks on- as fuel evaporates from the float bowls, better fuel from the tank will refill them. No fuel dries out and maybe cracks the rubber and plastic parts, unless you add a marine fogging oil spray. For spray paint, I like the ceramic brake caliper paint from an Advance auto parts store. I like lots of Fluid Film spray from a Lowes store to lube the throttle slides and diaphragms.

No, the bowls will not refill from the tank, these have a vacuum feed which means the engine must be running to allow fuel to flow

Now your doing something I actually know a lot about although I haven't worked on CVK /Kawasaki carbs for a few years. (usually Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki) Guess whoever had bike before you never heard of JIS screws? Using Phillips or 'posi drive' almost always chews up JIS although a #3 Phillips is 'almost' a good fit for #3-JIS if you tap it into screw head. Really should have run a fine copper wire through pilot jet, the brass gets a layer of oxidation and restricts the hole size, very easy to burnish out though. The 'good' thing about Kei-Hin carbs is the jet size is almost always the hole size in millimeters. Probably have around 35~40 pilots so it's 0.35~0.40mm diameter (around 0.012") (Mikuni and some Kei-Hin use flow rates @ around 19" head of fuel. There is a 'standard' but I forget exactly (It's based on AMAL carbs as Japan (Mikuni) made them under licence pre-WWII) Should also have checked the cross drilling in emulsion tubes for the same problem (copper is softer than brass so won't enlarge the holes) It's also a good idea to check tips of fuel mixture screws with a magnifier (I use x10 loupe) They often have a slight burr so don't meter accurately. You also need to make sure the springs are flat on the ends, almost all aftermarket kits have the spring just cut off leaving a sharp edge that digs into carb body and screw damaging them (not such a big deal on screw but is bad for carb body) It removes material that can get in passageways causing problems
@UPTHETOWN
@UPTHETOWN 2 жыл бұрын
Bang on 1crazypj, I also split them to check seals and to give the bodies a clean in an ultrasonic bath The O rings on the fuel feed tubes are more than likely bad. If I remember correctly the throttle shaft seals are felt on these carbs but many other types have rubber rings of one type or another, which go stiff with age and need replacing Carb cleaning & servicing is a dying art these days and this video isn't bad compared to many of the half-arsed efforts I've seen on YT
@1crazypj
@1crazypj 2 жыл бұрын
@@UPTHETOWN Hi Andy, I rarely use ultrasonic any longer on 40~50 yr old carbs, found it leads to excessive pitting where time and various chemicals have etched body inside float chamber. I have soda blasted carb bodies which does a great job of cleaning external surfaces but don't normally do much with cosmetics as I modify carbs to suit 'new' E10 fuel and removal of stock air filter system (although the mods work well with stock system) The factory setting don't generally work so well with today's fuels
