In this male soft spoken ASMR video with hand movement, we explore the history of textiles, fabrics and clothing:
- where fibers come from and how they were adopted by mankind, with special sections about the history of cotton, silk and wool.
- how fabrics, their manufacturing and trade, influenced international relations and contributed to economic history.
- the evolution of clothing and a few things it tells us about Western societies since the 15th Century.
Gail Rotschild's website: www.gailrothschild.com/
Her next international exhibition will take place in 2021 at the Bode Museum in Berlin. It will feature large paintings of ancient textiles alongside the originals.

As a history teacher, I feel physically compelled to note that cotton production took off in the American South after 1790 due to the mechanized cotton gin patented by Eli Whitney. This allowed short staple cotton, which is easier to grow but harder to clean by hand, to become a profitable cash crop. Before the cotton gin, only long stapled varieties were profitable, but it couldn’t be grown in as many places and it was still labor intensive to clean, so cash crops like rice, indigo, and tobacco were more dominant. Now that I have that off my chest, I can drift off to sleep listening to one of my favorite topics. :)

If only Eli Whitney had invented the combine harvester too, so slaves wouldn't have been needed to pick all the cotton flowers off the plants prior to mechanized cleaning.

I thought your history of dogs video was amazing but then I saw this. Once you start delving into the world of Textiles you really can go deep into the world of globalization and the human psyche. Textiles are functional but they also represent "style" and a way we present ourselves to the rest of the world. I strongly recommend a read into the textile markets on the Silk Road, because its the tip of the iceberg for understanding the way our world was shaped! Your voice was fantastic and its amazing how even the most simple things we take for granted, have amazing histories and stories.

Ooh, I’m so excited for this! My grandmother was a tour guide for a textile mill built in Derbyshire in the 19th century - she also owned and used her own spinning wheel well into the early 2000s. I’ve always found this part of history fascinating. I return to a very stressful work situation tomorrow as a preschool teacher here in Scotland so this is perfectly timed. Thank you for the meticulous work you put into these.

I love in a neighborhood just outside of Phoenix, Arizona called Goodyear. It was named after the tire company, Good Year Tires and was settled mainly by employees and their families. They grow cotton here they use in the tires. I had no idea they used cotton in rubber car tires, nor did I know the plant was domesticated here, too. I have a new appreciation for the plant, my preferred textile for clothes and for sewing thread.

Thank you, FW for another fascinating ( and requested) topic. You have also inspired me to look for some beautiful textiles for my home. As far as the psychology of clothing, I have seen people given jobs ( or not) because of their clothing, fingernails or tattoos. One very qualified woman was even passed over for a prestigious award because the committee was afraid that she always tried to look too sexy.. they thought it didn't fit the company image! Remember.. it takes only seven seconds for us to form a complete opinion about someone when they walk through the door-- even if wrong, it doesn't stop us.

Nice, relaxing video. I am certainly enjoying it. Cotton was NOT "introduced" to the Americas. Columbus wrote that he found the natives wearing cotton when he arrived in the islands off S. America. There is a wild cotton native to Florida, but in 1905, industrialists outlawed growing it, to eliminate competition for the sale of commercial seeds and fiber. It is almost extinct. I would like to see the law abolished, to preserve the native wild cotton of Florida. Cotton had been grown since prehistory in Egypt, India, Persia, and the Americas, pretty much anywhere it could be grown. Before sea level rise (Late Pleistocene\Early Holocene melt) the continents were all connected, or at least traders were travelling from island to island, but those islands are now under the sea. The Bering Straight is only 58 miles. The continents have never really been separated completely. Goods and knowledge travel.

Any time I’ve been anxious and had trouble sleeping these last few months, I’ve turned on one of your tracks on Spotify and it’s helped me so much to relax. Your soothing voice and always interesting topics are the perfect combination for anyone trying to get out their own head for a bit.

Hey could you do a video on the history of samurai? I think that would be very interesting topic to learn about!
