What does "Kia ora" mean?
"Kia ora" is a term from Te reo Māori, the language of the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand). It's a holistic term that can be used in lots of different situations. Translated literally, 'ora' refers to a state of living, or being alive. Adding 'kia' changes "ora" from a noun to a verb ('alive' to 'living'). So when you say kia ora to someone, you are wishing the essence of life upon them! "Kia ora" is commonly used as a greeting in Aotearoa, even though many of us (like me!) are not fluent in Te reo. I use it at the start of every video because it's important to me to share as much of the culture of this wonderful country as I can with you all. "Kia ora" can also be used as a way to say good luck, thank you and best wishes!

Great video, as always! I am curious about one thing-it’s spelled “kia ora” but I keep hearing you say “kia ona”. Are you actually pronouncing it that way or do I have crappy hearing? It’s entirely possible that I have crappy hearing! I know in some languages it’s spelled one way but prnounced another.

It's a slightly different r to one used in English but it's not an n. In IPA it's ⟨ɾ⟩ which is like a flap of the tongue.

I know some Japanese and the sound that is translated into English as an “R” or “L” sounds really more like a “d” to me, So, your explanation makes perfect sense to me. I know so little about Maori culture and language and am always happy to learn a little more. Thanks again!
