Preparing this topic was a lot! There is so much history and complexity, you could probably fill an entire channel with nothing but explorations of the London underground, so we're really just scratching the surface here. I hope you enjoy my ramblings and this fascinating glance into history. I'm also very excited to continue our exploration of London next week, with a map of the City during the Tudor era.
The diagrammatic map is by Douglas Rose, 9th edition. The book is the Depot Discovery by the London Transport Museum.

Like I watched something about the tunneling machines for an hour and it was just amazing! So it's very nice to hear your praise about the bits I picked in the end :)

I knew it! You handled the story of the London Underground brilliantly 🤩 It is a huge subject and I learned a lot of things I didn’t know and it made me want to visit the Transport Museum - I used to work around the corner from it and can you believe I never went! I’m so glad you had a good trip to London. Yes you are right Fenchurch Street isn’t an underground station and the Waterloo and City Line only runs between Waterloo and Bank - nowhere else. When I used to travel on it it was nicknamed “The Drain” - that’s what it felt like 😊. Fantastic video 🤩 Looking forward to next week.

I'm so happy you enjoyed it, Rachel!! Thank you so much, and again I appreciate your patience, I know you suggested the topic a while ago. Sadly I also didn't make it into the Transport Museum, I was just rushing through the shop haha. But hopefully next time! "The Drain" for a line that goes under a river sounds very ominous 😅😅😂

This was great! I love the idea of using maps of man-made systems rather than just of places. Canals, roads, rail lines all paint an interesting historical/socio-economic picture. Just to solve the mystery of further Waterloo&City stations. There are none. This little quirk of the system serves only two stations: Waterloo and Bank (which is in the City). The date of 1994 is when it was incorporated into Transport for London. Up until then, it was an independent being amongst the sea of TfL-managed lines. Also, as a nerd, I was hoping for the mention of Charles Tyson Yerkes who basically made this whole thing of underground railway possible, but that would mean delving deep into the railway boom of mid 19th century Britain... unless I slept through that part. Well, I will just have to rewatch the video again. And again. And again. Oh, and Metroland was a firmly 20th century project of interwar period. But I agree that it was way ahead of it's time. Looking forward to the next instalment of 'went to London to buy maps'. Essay over, -now- I can sleep. *Goodnight!*
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR Жыл бұрын
Hey Nina, thank you for your super detailed comment, love that you enjoyed the video! And yes, I had to cut a lot of things out - there is just so much info on the history of the tube, it's completely overwhelming. Interwar period for Metroland makes so much more sense!! Light and air definitely wasn't a concern in the 19th century here, I don't know why I thought it would have been different in London of all places haha. I'm embarrassed I got that wrong 😅
@ninchan2
@ninchan2 Жыл бұрын
@@MelangeASMR yeah, the beginnings of the tube especially are a wild ride. The rivalry between companies, their stupidly long names, the crazy ambitions, stations opened and closed out of spite... Anyhow, I'm just glad London underground as a topic was finally picked. Oh, and no worries, most people don't know Metroland existed in the first place, so placing it few years before the project started is not a major crime 😅 Thanks for (reading my comment to begin with) your reply and looking forward to more industrial videos 🤎

I could imagine the Elizabeth Line won't be included because its not actually a tube line, its a subterranean rail line. A small but subtle difference.
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR Жыл бұрын
That's the reason, yes! I got a bit confused by the name since it sounds like it's an underground line - Crossrail was bit clearer in that regard imo.

@@MelangeASMR I completely agree 😅 Crossrail was really clear. People still call it that now because it's been called crossrail for so long. It's super cool though. I hope you got a chance to ride it!

Seestadt in Vienna is a concrete nightmare, they put trees in concrete xD there was an entire forest there when i grew up and they cemented down everything. Lets hope future city development plans are done by less corrupt people that actually care about nature and people.
