A trolley problem is a moral dilemma in which one must decide whether to actively choose to destroy a smaller group to potentially save a larger group. In this video... we take on the challenge!

i dont like the one where you are tied down because i feel like if it really happened then human nature would take over and you would pull the lever to save yourself

I think the reason there will always be people that dont pull the lever might be determinism (not sure if thats the right term?) but essentially not interfering with the trolley no matter whats happening. Because without your interference there is a clear cut path and they might think it should stay the way God/the Universe/Fate or whatever there is determined.

i think only 61% pulled the lever to run the trolley into a brick wall because they believed there were people in the trolley. they could’ve also thought that they would be held accountable for the damage

Don't feel wrong if you're in the minority, the purpose isn't about finding an object correct answer. Some people believe when you pull the lever, you are actively making the choice to end a persons life, and that in itself is ethically worse than letting 5 people die to inaction. Though you may believe in saving the most lives you can, if instead the question was, "If you could stop a trolley from killing 5 people by pushing someone infront if it, would you?" You might be more likely to say no to this, yet at it's root, it's the same question. Of course, these are all hypotheticals and can't be translated to real life, but it is a good thought experiment for opening yourself up to other perspectives questioning your own sense of morality.

I think there was some misunderstanding of why people wouldn’t pull the leaver even early on. I think it’s a misreading of the situation to remove your agency and frame it as "save 5 or save 1". It’s not framed as you having two choices, but rather as having one choice. The leaver is you actively making a choice and taking a life. If you watch you’re scared by seeing that death in front of you, but you didn’t murder those people. If you pull the leaver your are actively deciding to kill someone and many people can’t live with that(and it’s something people often don’t consider when they hear a hypothetical, and don’t consider the gravity of the hypothetical). I personally couldn't live with myself if I took a life like that. And as you scale up, taking 4 innocent lives because the "you saved marginally more people" wouldn’t help me one bit. Maybe in the heat of the moment I might make a choice I forever regret out of instinct I don’t know. But giving my most deliberate answer would be I almost never pull the leaver (unless it’s like saving 100+ people or something, something so comically one sided that I don’t think I’d reasonably be able to be a bystander). I find the logic behind "I’d kill 4 people to save 5 in a heartbeat" terrifying. We don’t live in a word with perfect information, so if you’re willing to actively take lives because you perceive it’s marginally better, I find that scary.(and I personally chock it up not to people being ok with putting blood in their hands, but because they don’t fully grasp what it means to actively decide to pull the leaver). In a world with perfect information like a hypothetical I understand (not that I would) pulling the leaver, but it still freaks me out when I hear how many people say they would take lives if they thought it they thought was for the greater good/(net positive)

He totally missing the point of the problem lol. He’s looking past the fact that when you pull the lever you become the killer, whereas if you don’t do anything you are just a bystander and no blood is on your hands.

I think the main thing you didn’t think about is the responsibility aspect of it. Like if you don’t pull the lever you’re not responsible for what happens as you didn’t do anything. If you do pull it you’re entirely responsible. Like the one that makes you decided between 1 or 3 trolleys. You’d probably have to pay for the 1 trolley but not the 3

The point of the trolley problems are that since you are the one that is pulling the lever its your fault (under the law and morally) this is why in the 300,000$ vs 900,000$ you would be responsible for the damages of the 300,000$ trolley. This same principle is for all the questions for example you kill 1 person or the trolley kills 5.

i believe the one where you run over the trolley with the trolley is essentially:
