You let this plant dry out for too long and it'll get brown and shed like a sheep dog, so you'll want to make sure that you keep up some adequate moisture. Also, another word of caution-it has these prickly barbs, so be careful touching or walking near this one. Many a times I've caught my shirt on this. But oh how does it sprawl and grow! Asparagus setaceus is the #196 spot of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

I have grown some of the oddest plants. My favourite is the mimosa pudica, better know as the sensitive plant. Everyone that sees it wants one. The Muttart Conservatory was so happy when I donated mine to them!

I love the look of this plant although I don't have any ferns growing in my collection, I have been hesitant to get one because I never did very well with any ferns. Thanks so much again Summer for another interesting plant in this series. See you again tomorrow.

I have the Asparagus racemosus and i sort of trained around 6-8 of them in one single pot to grow up a straight thin bamboo stake and now it looks like a Christmas tree...Espescially with spiderwebs and fog on it...cannot wait for late winter when it gets a heckload of white flowers up and down it's stems which turn to gorgeous berries....PS- i grew mine from seed..😊

I absolutely love mine! I have good faith in it because it didn’t grow at all during the summer and it started to brown when the seasons changed but moving it closer to the window helped so much my plant decided to double in size in about 2 weeks! Also no more browning :)

I love my Asparagus, but mine is a plumosus. No spines, just soft and feather like, as the name suggests. But that setaceous is gorgeous! Going to have to watch for one. Never had problems with pests with mine either, but have found it doesn't mind drying out!

I had an asparagus fern once. It was a tiny thing that I over potted and set outside in full sun during my southern Ohio summer. It grew so fast, by the end of summer, it was pot bound. I had no choice but to break the pot it was in, just to get it out. It was a monster! But it had cute little white flowers everywhere, so I forgave it. Once it was moved into the house, it declined rapidly and I couldn't save it. :(

A. plumosus is a synonym for A. setaceus. The latter should be the most up-to-date scientific name.

I keep seeing a different version as the setaceus type. The cladophylls of the other are much flatter. I would like the comparison of the two names.

My cat killed most of my plant. The plant is 5 years old and has a ton of little bulbs and roots. It probably only has a few 5 inch left A and a few 15 inchish stems. It looks ridiculous in such a big part. Do I keep it in a big pot since the pot is FULL of roots and bulbs? Or do I separate it into plants based on the stems?

Too Bright light? Your plant would be more robust and not lean over like that if It had at least several hours of sun a day. I put mine outside in summer in full direct sunlight (I do acclimate them gradually from their indoor winter imprisonment) here in Chicago. I water it the same as I would a geranium if the temps. are over 90 degrees F. and make sure they have good drainage with a saucer but don't let them sit in water. I put them out in mid may then bring them in October before temps drop below 40 degrees F. I do the same with my Foxtail and Ming varieties. Once they get large enough for a 6" pot I'll have to divide them at least once a year. Good luck.
