In this second video of the exploration of the German/Austrian folk costume called the "Bregenzerwald costume" I make the beautiful golden headpiece the "Schappale". This crown is a work of art, worn only for the most special occasions. This video is part of my "What my Ancestors Wore" series, where I explore costumes my genetical ancestors may have worn.

Wow! This is gorgeous and has so much detail! Good job! Other keyword combos for the gold bullion wire would be goldwork embroidery, pearl purl and check purl, tambour embroidery metal thread.

Funfact, the word schapelle is actually from the middle german word for the predecessor of crowns named Schäpel

Has a very ‘eastern’ vibe to me. Trade influence perhaps? The wire coil flowers are a great trick! I may use that for other crafting some time. Lovely editing - you are very skilled.

Thank you! Sadly I can't find any sources on the influences on it, but I agree. Would be fascinating to know tho! Thinking about it I'd say it may have been the Spanish influence (the black colour of the Juppe and I suspect the filigree work of the jewellery they wear with the costume also comes from that influence). And obviously the Spanish been influenced by the Islamic craftsman of Andalusia.

@@AspiringCostumeDesigner Beeing from the Bregenzerwald I can tell you one thing: men from our very mountainous region would go a seasonal workers to italy and France to build (especially baroque) churches and palaces. My great great grandfather was "stukateur" in Lyon f.e.. That's why there are many french and Italian influences in our culture. I think the word juppe also comes from french. That's the way this influence came about if it existed

Did you actually make the Schäppel from pipe cleaners? The wires used are leonic wires of different kinds and gauges, like bouillon and flat wires, many are genuinely gold-plated. A lot of the techniques are also used in "Klosterarbeit".
@AspiringCostumeDesigner
@AspiringCostumeDesigner 2 жыл бұрын
I had to improvise as I don't really have the budget for real gold plated wires.

@@AspiringCostumeDesigner Ah, me neither, there are affordable versions that are gold and silver tone - copper wire covered in messing, which oddly enough is called "cement" in this case. Do a search on "Mukaish" and "Badla" embroidery wires from India, those can be used for all sorts of goldwork where Trachten are concerned - Golden bonnets, gold embroidery on bodices and Schäppel ;)

there is no such a thing as folk crown! wear things right. they are only used for weddings. this is rediculous. its called a wedding crown and is only used with wedding folk dress such as nowegian wedding bunad. so you know, and only to be used AT the wedding, by the bride. and its suppose to be made of silver and embroderies

You are not saying anything I didn't know before. But people wouldn't click on this video otherwise, and we are all slaves to the algorithm. If you want to see the full outfit see my juppe video, where I wear it how it's "supposed to be worn ".
