Recap of my first weekend racing as an expert in 2024. It certainly wasn't forgettable. I probably would prefer to forget parts of it though.
Ultralightweight Superbike on a 2001 SV650. PittRace. First corner, first lap, very wet. My biggest fear out there is running over another rider. A better rider maybe could have avoided this outcome. I couldn't tell which way the downed rider was going. I kept adding brake as I was catching him. Eventually it sent me over the bars and the bike doing a very picturesque 360 in the air. What you can't see in the video is that it lands on my head which is why it kicks out to the right side of the track on landing. I remember knocking my head on the ground, looking up, and seeing the #109 plate coming right at me. I had enough time to process the thought that "This is where I get seriously injured". But I didn't. Just a messed up right hand and a messed up bike.
I'm lucky as hell to be able to walk away from this one. Not how I wanted the year to start--especially after putting in what was a really confidence inspiring performance in the GTL race earlier in the day.

Dude, you are a hero for putting the other racer's wellbeing above anything else. Great riding, keep the videos coming!

You did good in the first clip. I'm a big fan of asking "what could I have done better?" 99.9% of the time but this isn't one of those situations. Maybe you could have swerved but the brakes were the best way to reduce risk here. Sucks that your bike is broken and your race ended early but you absolutely did the right thing.

Thanks Danny. I think I've gotten caught up watching the slow motion replay trying to find an out where in reality I didn't have that much time to find one. All things considered, this potentially big mess ended up just being a small one, so I'm happy about that. Thank you for the encouragement.

Honestly Matt, incredible story and good marketing material for HEL, the master is so good you can literally make an SV do a 360 flip. 🤣 Glad your okay - and don't beat yourself up - sometimes there's nothing you can do in those situations and I think both of you walking away is the biggest win you can ask for. Can't wait for the next update. PS your SV now looks like mine! lol

It'll actually give me a lot more confidence braking hard in a straight line in the rain, that's for sure. The downside is it's also going to give me some trust issues following right behind someone in the rain. Might be taking lap 1 turn 1 with a bit of trepidation in the future. Oh yea, now we're both in the fairing-fitting business!

Don't beat yourself up at all, you did good not hitting him. When you're more experienced and the conditions are better it gets easier to avoid these things and keep going but you did all you could here.

Like I said on the VRF forum Matt, Im glad you are ok. Good that you flipped the bike instead of hitting the guy. At the end of the day, you both walked away and thats the most important thing. sorry you bike got cracked up, but bikes can be fixed.

Thanks man--the walking away is definitely the important part. I might need to be reaching out to you on how to glue these fairings back together. Actually... nevermind, your work is always gorgeous. This definitely isn't going to be, haha. Once I get the VFR700 rear fairing in tho... then I may need to reach out.

Dude, I had no idea it was the opening lap. Don't beat yourself up about this. There isn't anywhere you could've gone. You have less than a split second to make a decision, my instinct wouldn't have been to go left. It would've been to go right to avoid but there isn't time. It looks like he had a shifting issue and it just snapped. Don't blame yourself for any of this. I can guarantee you, you would've hit him otherwise. On another side note, I couldn't believe how much grip the track had in wet conditions and I was hoping you guys wouldn't get any crazy rain on slicks. Another note.....YOU ARE NOT THE MOST UNDERQUALIFIED EXPERT IN THE MIDWEST OR THE USA. TRUST ME! I've seen riders out who shouldn't have been Experts, let alone even out there racing. Give yourself some credit, you're learning and progressing and improving. Lots of people get stuck on an island and don't try to improve, think they're the worlds gift to racing and just like to say they're a racer without any speed or experience to back it up. You did a great job considering what happened and this being mixed conditions in your first ever Expert race. The fact that you're upset by where you are pace wise shows you have the desire to improve and are working through it. Think back to where you were even a year ago to where you are now. I remember when you were just a guy experimenting with trackdays, in Orange group and now you're flowing and out there with Experts WHERE YOU DESERVE TO BE! Keep doing what you're doing.

Oh yea, first race, first lap, first corner. We like to kick the party off fast in Lightweights. I'm pretty sure it was from a bad downshift or possibly an extra downshift that sent his rear sideways after breaking traction. That track is pretty wild in how much grip it has in the wet. The only real sketch spot I could see is that sealer in T18--but that may not even be a grip issue, it's just really bumpy depending on where you hit it. Alright, I'll drop the underqualified bit. It was technically true based on the promotions of last year, but I proved to myself I belong based on pace this past weekend. A long way to go to the top, but now I can put my head down and start grinding towards that goal. Thank you the comment. I think that's what I needed to put this one behind me and get on with having fun and putting some good runs in at the remaining rounds in 2024. Cheers man.

nice job missing that guy, he owes you a beer at least. pitt is grippy af in the rain even on slicks. i also treat GTL as practice :) i think you missed that turn on lap2 cause you turned in too early. your speed was fine but you ended up missing the apex and pointed in the wrong direction in the middle of the turn

also, "if they can do it so can i" does work in rain races :P

I'll have to go back and watch my turn 1 turn in points compared to footage of other people, because that certainly may be the case. If I'm turning in early it also means I'm rushing the braking and down shifting which makes it worse. I'll try starting that turn a little later next round and see how she goes. The grip levels at Pitt in the rain are pretty nuts. It's tough to adjust your brain to it when I'm used to some tracks that just have patches that turn into skating rinks. Thanks man.

@@Mad8vCycles I'm going to try the repair route today and start inhaling some resins. If that doesn't go well and I'm incapable of piecing it back together, I'll reach out. I know you're also a hot bodies dealer which if all else fails, maybe I could get new bodywork thru you since it'd bolt up to my existing mounts easy. I'm getting closer to figuring out my shopping list for you on the Superbike rebuild. First order of business will be a new rear axle because I'm not running the aluminum one they fabbed up for it... Those madhatter lunatics, haha.

Glad u ok. Fix yourself and the bike. And do the race at Blackhawk. I want to end up on your video when u pass me. :-) ( 2008 sv650)

Hah, that's the plan. Starting to get some parts on order, and I'll get into the bike this weekend. I should be ready to go by Blackhawk. And something tells me it's me that's going to be chasing you at blackhawk--not the other way around. I'm pretty sure you have a lot more laps around that place than I do! I do have the advantage of more seat time on an SV than you do though. The good news is there are plenty of guys there that have or have had second gen SV's that are going to be able to give you a bunch of advice on anything mechanical you might need.

@@Maximumtrack Yea, I'm guessing you kept waiting for it to go faster on the straightaway and it just never happened, hah. The SV was a commuter bike turned into a race bike. That R6 of yours was a thoroughbred race bike the day it was born. I imagine the difference is pretty significant.

It was good racing with you man--looking forward to getting to do it again. If that was your first time out there at Pitt, I'd say you did pretty damn well. I'm not sure I was going to be able to stay out in front of you after re-watching--it looks like you actually walked away from the group of riders I was in (speedhive seems to be missing results so I'm not positive). But yea, that drizzle was playing with my head a bit. That's definitely my favorite track I've been to. No Summit for me this year, but hopefully I can add that one to my list in the future. Thanks for hosting your youtube vids man! I was able to find them previously and checked a few out from tracks I haven't been to yet.
