Mājuli or Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra River, Assam and in 2016 it became the first island to be made a district in India. It had an area of 1,255 square kilometres at the beginning of the 20th century, but having lost significantly to erosion it covers 352 square kilometres as at 2014.

Hi Ajay: Majuli looks so peaceful. It would indeed be a disaster if that island were to be submerged in the future. It is a cultural and spiritual place. The great saint Srimanta Sankardev established many satras (monasteries) on this island. According to legend, it is believed that Lord Krishna himself visited this island, enchanted by its beauty. That gave rise to Vaishnavism on this island. The island also has a famous mask maker. These traditional masks are used in the dance dramas that take place on the island.

Hi Ajay ..vaishnavas not go from tamilnadu..they came from north..spl sindhu samavali ..Aryaas..that'd why still TN politics says tamilnnadu is a dravida nadu not for aryaas..And Krishna and parasurama are not friends they are brothers..parasuramar is elder than krishna..And thanks for showing this beautiful island..In our place too before 20 yrs it was like this but now all our cultivating lands are become a buildings...one day TN will face a big trouble for the food..so if anyone pan to build a house don't buy cultivating ands and lake area lands..save our nature to give food for our grand grand children..

From Varanasi Ganga Vilas Cruise flagged off by PM today. The cruise will also be covering Mayong, known for its Tantric craft, and Majuli, the largest river island and hub of Vaishnavite culture in Assam. The travellers will also visit the Bihar School of Yoga and Vikramshila University, allowing them to soak in the rich Indian heritage in spirituality and knowledge. The cruise will also traverse through the biodiversity rich world heritage sites of Sunderbans in Bay of Bengal delta, famous for royal Bengal tigers, as well as Kaziranga National Park, famous for one-horn rhino.

The people of majuli are mushing, in those time we used to go to pasighat from dibru that to oyiram that, on the way this island majuli comes from dibrugarh our boat is at 7/am, majuli will arrive at 11.30 am, on the banks people used to sell bananas, actually it is jungle variety, by the time it reaches oyiram ghat it will be 7.30 pmthe boat is mostly run by expert biharis who normally ferry in ganges

The services of biharis in trade and commerce is great, even in China border marwadis run shops for which supply comes from TINSUKIA. Krishna statue iskept for worship many of my students are from mushing community, they are in oyan, jonai, likabali, sillapathar and north lakimpur, their BIHU festival in April is vibrant, dance and music throughout night is very much enjoyable
