For the curious, yes, Yasuke was a real dude and the first African on record to set foot in Japan. Basically nothing is known about him, including his real name, exact age, or place of origin. What little was written of him state that he was a servant to an Italian Jesuit missionary and came by way of India. Oda Nobunaga took him as a personal retainer, giving him the only name we know him by, and Yasuke served in that role for 15 months until Nobunaga's death. After the Honno-ji Incident, during which Nobunaga was betrayed and assassinated by his vassal Akechi Mitsuhide, Yasuke was spared and returned to the custody of the Jesuit missionaries - and here he disappears from historical record. Officially, Yasuke never held the title of samurai, though there are accounts that he may have been allowed to carry a sword and fight for Nobunaga.

Ubisoft has said that you can choose to play as one or the other. However, there are certain points in the story where you have to play as a certain character because it deals directly with that person storyline other than that you can switch as you please.

He did not grow up in Japan. He was a slave in the service of the Italian Jesuit missionary. Arrived in Japan in 1579 in his early 20s given to Oda Nobunaga because he was amazed by his skin, height and strength in 1581 where he was respected and and promoted to a highly ranked retainer stayed for around a year and a half with Nobunaga and after his death left Japan in 1582. So roughly 4 years in total living in Japan and roughly 2 was with Nobunaga.

They were always so against China and Japan if you asked them in the past and it seemed like perfect places for this sorta franchise. This is cool to see even though I haven't played since Black Flag.

I got to play assassins creed freedom cry on ps3 and I was supper disappointed that it was just a short dlc about 4 hours long. Remember there wasn’t an companies like Sweet Baby Inc that push DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) back then. This only means that Ubisoft didn’t care to even make stand alone assassin creed game with black protagonist. You may remember assassins creed liberation but that too was a short dlc side story not even a full game. Now that DEI are being pushed in gaming Ubisoft cares to make a black protagonist the only problem is there is no black culture, no language or historical black customs like they are only doing this to push a narrative that Ubisoft is inclusive when in reality they don’t care about black history. When I learned about King Mansa Musa, me being the assassins creed fan that I am I was hopeful that Ubisoft would make a game based of King Mansa Musa pilgrimage across Africa to Mecca or a game based on his timeline when he lived. Ubisoft fully deserves the hate for excluding us from full length game.

Not my words but in actual dictionary definitions, Retainer is a person attached or owing service to a household especially a: SERVANT or b: EMPLOYEE. There’s discrepancies in Japanese history about Yasuke and we don’t know he was a retainer or a samurai that was trained. There is basically no actual documentation except for a few stories, but stories can change over time because of different perspectives, different things happening different mindset. Just like for example, that if you say something from a long time ago by word-of-mouth, then someone says it in a different word or words than that word-of-mouth or whatever you said can be different. And we cannot forget about WWII that many things could’ve been lost because of the war, and we may never know from certain items to certain documentations were burnt or been completely annihilated because of the two bombs, but we don’t know. I’m not saying that this can be a true story or not but all we know that he was nothing more than a retainer and that is it. I am sorry to say, but until there is actual more evidence like where is Yasuke Katana sword? Where is it? Does anyone know? Because if you have that sword and it has his name on it and approves that he was a samurai, but in the end, no sword, no proof that he was a samurai. Both Greed and WOKE is the message and agenda on both UBISOFT and Sweet Baby Inc. and Black Gamer Girls, and DEI Money. There is no story or the Hero's Journey in this game. Assassin's Creed is just now a "Shadow Shell," of itself and an empty husk. You know if only the Baka writer read Japanese History a lot closer than instead of 2 characters to play, there could be only 1 character to play. There was an opportunity they could have used instead of a fictional black samurai character and in real history he was a retainer not a samurai. If only they read Japanese history carefully and throughly they could have made the only one Japanese Female Assassin Character. Combined both true history and fiction, Japanese women at the time did learn to use a particular weapon called, "Naginata," a Polearm weapon with a curved blade at the top. While the katana sword tends to be associated with male samurai of Japan, a distinctive weapon called the naginata has been traditionally associated with women and female fighters known as onna-bugeisha. This could have been the base of a Japanese Assassin's Creed Story, with a Japanese Woman who learned to use the Naginata and eventually learns the way of the Assassin's Brotherhood. Do you know why they don’t want to make a game based in Africa, especially in Assassin’s Creed well because in actual history, many of the warring tribes enslaved their own kind. In about 90% or even 80% of the black population of today, don’t want to admit that their own kind in Africa, their own ancestors in Africa enslaved their own kind. This is why they don’t want to make any Assassin’s Creed games based in Africa. I know they already did Egypt, but I am talking other African countries or places in Africa other than Egypt like South Africa, Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and the other 48 African countries.

BA and MA holder of Japan history, language and literature here; A Samurai is not necessarily supposed to fight in wars, the word "Samurai/侍" in the Japanese language means "Servant", and they were not always supposed to fight wars. A farmer, a teacher, a retainer, people who served the Daimio and people of Daimio's land, were Samurai. Yasuke was def a Samurai, there's no doubt about that at all. There's another class, inferior than the Samurai, called "Bushi,武士", they were soldier, always in the battle, even mercenaires were called bushi. Where as the Samurai were more than that, from teacher to farmers, to warriors and bureaucrats. Yasuke was a Retainer and then at the times of battle, he picked up the gear and fought wars.

Hey much respect saying the rpg ones are your fave I really don't mind that cause it gets new people, just for me I grew up with it so the rpg ones definitely changed the perspective but I'll give this game credit, I am piqued and may look into this one and give it a shot.

And if the U is surrounded by voiceless consonants then the U is not pronounced at all. Pronunciation wise Japanese is among the easiest of all: Yakuza = Yak-za Yasuke = Yas-ke Samurai = Sam-rai And the letter 'A' in Japanese is pronounced like the 'A' in "Arc" or "Arm".

I see... So Ubisoft has lost enough money that they decided to press the "listen to the fans" button... We've been asking for an AC in Japan for decades, and we're finally getting one. Nice trailer, can't wait to see actual gameplay, tho. I'm actually glad that there is more and more recent media featuring Yasuke as a character. The anime, as cheesy as people call it, I kinda enjoyed. And as some people are going to state here, there's a lot to interpret to his character as there isn't much info regarding his history. Could be interesting.
