There are a lot of great Assassin’s Creed games... and a lot of bad ones too... but there are a few spin-offs that I don’t hear people talking about too often within the mainstream community. Bloodlines, Freedom Cry, and Assassin’s Creed Liberations, to name a few and I’d like to take a look at that final one because it, much like some of the other handheld games, gets reasonably overshadowed by the larger, main titles in the franchise. A feeling I couldn’t shake while playing Assassin’s Creed Liberation was that it was set up for failure. Of course, any game that releases on a handheld is going to reach a smaller audience than it would if it were on console and you might be saying “well wait the 3DS had games that sold millions of copies” and that is certainly true, but this game was released for the PlayStation Vita.

Assassin's Creed Liberation - The Game Doomed to Fail
Assassin's Creed Liberation was released for the PS Vita but this Assassin's Creed Liberation Review will only include the PC port. This Assassin's Creed Liberation critique will not be an Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered Review while the Assassin's Creed Liberation Gameplay and the HD Assassin's Creed Liberation PC Gameplay is the same across the remasters and the HD port, I do give some brief thoughts on the remaster. But I mostly focus this review on the HD port and consider it's original purpose as an Assassin's Creed PS Vita game. This Assassin's Creed Liberation Analysis will look at Assassin's creed Liberation years later and evaluate the quality of the Assassin's Creed Liberation port. I feel that Assassins Creed Liberation is The Game Doomed to fail. This is the next entry in the that boy aqua assassins creed retrospective.
Assassin's Creed III: Liberation is a 2012 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Sofia and published by Ubisoft. It was originally released for the PlayStation Vita on October 30, 2012 in North America, with a worldwide launch the following day. It is the fourth spin-off installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and takes place alongside the events of Assassin's Creed III.
The plot is set within a fictional history of real-world events and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The game is set in late 18th-century Louisiana, from 1765 to 1777, and focuses on the life of French Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, the series' first female protagonist, as she attempts to stop the Templars from gaining control over New Orleans towards the end of the French and Indian War. The game takes place within an open world and is presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on using Aveline's combat, stealth, and parkour abilities to complete missions and explore the environment.
The original release of Liberation received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its setting and protagonist, but disliked the narrative's execution and certain aspects of the gameplay, while feeling that the title was limited by its status as a spin-off. A fully remade version of the game, titled Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD, was released in January 2014 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows via the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Steam, respectively. A remastered version of Liberation HD was released as part of Assassin's Creed III Remastered for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows in March 2019, and for the Nintendo Switch in May 2019. The remastered version was redesigned to operate with 4K HDR/enhanced visuals, and includes several improvements such as a new graphics engine using physics-based lighting, new character models, and heavily revamped gameplay mechanics.

Considering all the other allies that are assassins get to dress however they want without the now practically trademarked hood and wrist bracers (which have no application except for combat, which is a red flag) that they probably should be more willing to disguise themselves. While it made more sense for women across the eras, though men's clothing could also be restrictive, a persona system makes them more believable that they could sneak up onto Templars. Funnily enough the game that kinda followed this idea was Syndicate.

I have to say that costume mechanic looks cool and look like it would be fun to experiment. As someone who loves trying to play as stealthy as possible, it makes me wish some of the older games had that kind of ability. I alway found it odd that Ezio pretty much walk into enemy territory in full assassin gear and noones the wiser. Also yes, Gravity Rush is one of the greatest games ever.

This _game_ is about creating fake history and reliving simulation of false memory to further inculcate (further entrench) a farse historical reality by impressing the portrayal of _history_ through an intentionally fictional reproduction. Despite any meta (layer) implication of pointing this out; this device (implanted memories) is built into the _story_ of the _game_.

I finished playing it for the first time just last week and I fairly enjoyed it. I really loved Aveline, more than Connor who was ok but kinda bland. The story was generally good and the gameplay was still very polished and smooth. The graphics were very good as well and I experienced very few issues. I especially liked the different personas. They each brought new avenues and ways to play. Plus with nice smaller bits like underwater segments and the whip to move around and this could have been one of the best games in the series. Still it is far from perfect. Aveline is fantastic but most of the supporting cast are subpar, both in terms of their character and their voice acting. I can barely remember most of the antagonists in the game and there was never a real sense of danger. Plus Gerald was annoying and Agate was underdeveloped and underused. Many of the missions felt a bit odd and disjointed. Sometimes it would be a bit unclear what the point of my actions were or what exactly was happening. Still I loved this game and am glad I played it. I loved playing the Aveline dlc in Black Flag and I wish to see more of her in the future.

Definitely one of your better videos, only missed a couple things: The slave is not instantly investigated in restricted areas, giving you more time to react, and the trading is unique in that it allows you to lose money if you poorly plan your routes. Is the disc not a Piece of Eden? It shows a Precursor message so it's of their technology. Finally, every single one of the technical issues you experienced was caused by the original PC port, even the whip swinging. I hadn't realized just how screwed up it was until today. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the AC3R version of Liberation is one of the best performing games in the series. Some of my PC friends can't even get the HD version to run at all!

My biggest problem with the game has to do with its undeveloped story and mechanics, like the persona system. Not only are the sequences very short, despite there being more sequences than Syndicate, but the story felt extremely undeveloped. The multiple time jumps didn't help with this. However, I do feel the characters themselves were written quite well, and it shows during the mission with Connor, as well as the Black Flag DLC where you play as Aveline again. And yes, the cutscenes aren't very great. That said, the trading system in this game is the best trading system in any of the games, and it's actually rather easy. You can have a total of 12 ships, and there are four cities in particular that each sell something one of the other cities buys, and they buy it for more than any other location will buy them for. All you gotta do is just send four ships at a time from one city to next in a perfect loop. You'll get a butt load of money and this really helps with buying all the collectibles.
@midshipman8654
@midshipman8654 2 жыл бұрын
I did remember liking trading. it was easy enough to not really be a bother, but enough strategy and risk reward in planing your route and where to sell things and how to get there. you started to really get a concept of supply and demand.

13:25 There is one advantage of the assassin outfit. It allows you also to use things like your whip later on which can give you the ability to jump to other buildings that are too far. However, it's only usable at certain points. I feel if they had added more of these tools that ONLY the assassin can use, it would be a good choice between "blending" and trying to get your target by scaling the buildings (for example, you could also make it that the slave is easier spotted when she goes on a roof due to her outfit). The lady could also be someone who can influence guards or people so that a riot happens which makes it easier to slip through when everyone is distracted similar to how you can sometimes control crowds in Unity. Of course, the best way for the lady would be that she can just enter areas through completely different ways that are not available for slaves. Like, she can enter the nice part of the festival, where the slave would be the one serving drinks in order to not draw attention. Maybe the lady would be able to carry poison with her that the slave couldn't carry so she could poison drinks. There are possibilities if you give more time. Tbh, when I started Syndicate I hoped the game would go in that direction with Jacob being either dressed as a worker or nobleman while Evie could take the role of the classic assassin. But sadly, they didn't do much to differentiate the two.

I finished it (which is more then I can say for Revelation, Black flag, and Syndicate) but it really REALLY didn't use it's mechanics or concept to the fullest. She is the series only good female protagonist. Evie is a bad jacob, lacking in depth and a selfish teachers pet. The less said about the gender bender known as Eivor the better, and Kassandra is a disgusting character. Layla was bad Desmond, and lydia never got a chance to shine. Basicly, Aveline is the only original and well thought out female protagonist. She's one of my favourite protagonists along with Jacob, and Edward.

@@daytimelantern6570 no. Evie and Layla were both poorer alternatives to Jacob and Desmond. The ideas behind both layla and evie was to simply create an ready existing character, but as a woman, and because these 2 ideas weren't original, they lacked the passion and creativity that made Jacob and Desmond good. (If you look into syndicate development, Evie as a playable "protagonist" was a late development idea, as the higher ups wanted a female option, after unity gender criticism.)

I actually really liked this game when I played it on the Vita back in the day, it was fun and high quality, really impressive for a portable. Though, what really broke it down for me were those awful mandatory augmented reality "minigames", especially one that used the camera to light up a map and show its hidden contents, since it was so buggy, and impossible to progress without a strong enough light source nearby.

way back when it came out, it was absolutely brilliant on vita. probably doesnt hold up so well thanks to the Switch, but man, playing Liberation on the original vita model, one of the first mobile devices to use an OLED screen, something that the Switch is now marketing in the pro models, was amazing. the OLED provided this brilliant depth of color, similar to HDR enabled displays, and Liberation made full use of the color palette to make up for some aliasing and a not great frame rate.

Things I liked in Liberation : The persona system was really good, with specific abilities, tasks and interactions with the world for each persona. The CitizenE system, fourth wall breaking, of course game made by Abstergo would manipulate the truth to be pro-Templar in it's story telling, revealing the truth through finding changed the whole story and it made much more sense. Things I didn't like in Liberation : The Bayou is incredibly boring, I know it was on Vita but I'm sure they could've made a more interesting terrain, the part in Mexico had a great terrain. The plot twist of the evil Templar stepmother was so cringey and I saw it come from a mile away. The "reveal the map by running around because viewpoints don't reveal everything" was incredibly frustrating, it was done right in AC3 but wrong in Liberation, in AC3 the area being revealed round you is roughly the size of the minimap compass, in Liberation it's like 1-2 meters around you, incredibly frustrating to reveal the entire Bayou if you are a completionist like me, literally takes hours.

A big part of the Vita’s failure was also that it used more conventional cartridges rather than the UMDs (Universal Media Disc) the PSP did, making PSP collections useless for the Vita. Add in not all of the PSP library was available digitally due to things like licensing with music (as was the case for Crisis Core), and it really came down to games worth buying a system for.

Having played some of it now, yeah. I am kind of mad this costume mechanic didn't come back and get tweaked because it actually added to the social stealth slot for me. I always found ot strange that besides this game only revelations used disguises with Ezio dressing up as the musicians dudes on a mission and a guard in another. It would have opened up new stealth opportunies and ways to play the game in my opinion. It also poses a fun challenge using certain disguises for different missions that the game may not intend you to use. Seriously, i want this mechanic to come back in some form. It makes more sense than the bombs and rpg elements they added to other games in the series.

Well it's the same with Ps3 and Ps4 (with respectively their predecessors), but it don't look to me like they failed because of that. Psvita was just overhyped from the beginning and what killed was the lack of games, at least for western audiences. They only tried at its launch, but it wasn't enough (also I would add that pricing memory sticks for 60 euros even after more than 10 years that the console has come out, is fucking madness, same goes with official Sony chargers).

You know, a funny and smart thing about the bad cutscenes in Liberation: The context of the Animus in this game is that you're a customer that bought an entertainment-focused Animus. You have a thing about someone called "Erudito" hacking the game to show you the truth that Abstergo is hiding. You do a side quest and you see the alternate, actual version of a cutscene. You can extrapolate that ALL the cutscenes are results of Abstergo's bad writing. Also, the Vita version has some exclusive stuff, some missions are different and some missions are straight up cut from the HD version because it uses things exclusive to the Vita, like the front and back touchscreens.

However, for a portable title, that is pretty impressive. Looking at it as a portable game first really helped me to temper my expectations more.

Liberation was quite enjoyable, bit short but understandably. I'll have to return to this one some time to find all the collectibles and try the sequences again.

I played the demo of this game when it was released on the PS3 as HD. I liked Aveline and her use of disguises, and it was nice seeing another ac game set in the 1700s. I just wish they didn't break up the mission structure like they did and stuck with the open world all the way through instead of segmenting it. Then again it was a PSP Vita game so there are constraints involved.

Now that I think about it, wouldn't Aveline's skillset be the most realistic take on an assassin? Using disguises and guile to subvert and kill her targets and whatnot..

I liked AC Liberation. It presented new ideas like the protagonist being able to blend in society by disguising herself as a high society lady or a slave instead of going around in a AC uniform basically. She had diferent options and choices depending on her appearance, adding a new layer to stealth that i've never seen in other AC games. But the fact that the game was built for a PS vita made it very basic in terms of graphics, performance and size.

A fair review. I loved Liberation (at least the 360 version I played) almost as much as my personal favourite, Rogue. Why? Because it felt like the first game to try to be different. Smaller more contained focus. Innovative ideas like the disguises (even if poorly executed). And I enjoyed the setting and tone of the game.

I am not an a fan of Assassin's Creed as a whole at all anymore but I do have some nostalgia for weird portable games based on franchises that started in the 00s. I remember going out my way to play AC Bloondlines and got it around the time of release. This game I remember being a huge showcase for the Vita. Funny how you say PS3 is divisive, I prefer it over most if not all Nintendo consoles, the Xbox 360 and the PS1 and 4, it's game libary anyway.

It had solid graphics compared to phones at the times, and there were great gems like Minecraft, Unit 13, Motorstorm RC, Uncharted Golden Abyss, PlayStation All Stars, Little Big Planet, and this game even.

I do agree there are some plot elements that could be done better, but I absolutely loved Aveline. Favorite AC protagonists, her and Connor. I actually thought the game was better done than it's AC 4 cousin, Freedom Cry, where the protagonist didn't have the it factor.

I loved this one. I especially liked the ruins stuff. And the different outfits. They really should do what they did Rogue. This game suffered the same issue Gravity Rush and that Uncharted psp game did, the PSP. I can't say the Nintendo handheld weren't for more or less the same games like they still are on Switch, but here we are.

Other than the uninteresting story, I loved everything about this game. The gameplay reminded me of 3 which is still my favorite. The disguises mechanic was genuinely great. I have no complaints, since a good story is always a bonus and not a requirement for me. As someone who had a PS Vita, this was more than I expected from a handheld game.

At the time of releases, I preferred the PSP over Vita. During it's lifetime, the Vita was a paperweight more than a gaming device. Today though, if you can pick one up for a decent price, they make great handheld emulation devices.

I've been playing this and trying to figure out how it differed from the other games considering I played 3 before this one and it was the remastered version. I thought something seemed low budget until he pointed out that the atmosphere was lacking due to budget restrictions. I didn't play this on the vita, but I do remember vita and believe that it was a good edition to smaller titles. My thoughts were that this game seems like a fever dream of assasins creed 3 or 4 lol still fun though and in ways more clean than some bigger titles

Recently I 100% AC Liberation through AC 3 Remastered where I not only got 100% in game statistic but 100% in achievements as well. I also got 100% in the same manner for AC 3 and its DLC Tyrranny of King Washington. My thoughts of AC Liberation was kind of conflicting in comparison to Aqua. I had a mostly positive experience, most of my gripes with the game is petty in a sense. An example being the final Sequence I realized when I was looking at my DNA that I actually had the second "dlc/preorder/unique store mission" Connors way in sequence 7 available so thinking the main mission hovering over the Grandpre manor was Connor's Way instead I was forced into the final missions where it put me into mission after mission after mission. I knew in advance that the mission where you confront Agate and the final mission where you confront Madeleine had a No Damage optional objective and it was made infinitely easier with smokebombs and I had none. I spent over an hour trying and failing to do the Agate mission and being annoyed that it not only forced me into the mission but it did not give me the option to abort the memory so I could buy smoke bombs. Eventually I had to concede and settle for 50% sync so I could go back and get the 100 later but the fact that it forced you into the missions annoyed me mainly because I wanted the final mission and the credits scene to be the last thing I did until I got 100% completion but it did not pan out that way. Aside from that minor petty gripe there were some things that I appreciate with the game that most people wouldnt be aware of. One of the main ones was the Jeane Diary pages that once you read them it really expands on the story. In contrast if you view Jeanes entry in the database it is incomplete and the final entry says something like, "If you want to read more there is something to find in the world that continues her story." I am a big lore guy so i appreciated reading more about Jeane however what initially confused me was the conflict in the story between what was established in the first mission and what was stated in the diary pages. It was implied that Jeane willingly left Aveline in the care of her father and she was essentially pushed out by Madeleine but she was wanting to hide from the Assassin's and someone she thought was more threatening likely the Company Man/Madeleine. The diary also states that Mounsier de Grandpre knew what happened to Jeanne and why she left but decided to respect her wishes and keeping her location secret. One of the main complaints with the game was the story was confusing to some, however the story itself has some added detail to it if you read the diary pages, however the argument must be made that you would only see this if you picked up an optional collectable which may be a poor design choice. Last thing I will state that wasnt brought up in this video is I also appreciated the Trade system where I actually reached a point where i had no money to buy pocket watches for an achievement and I had to resort to pickpocketing at one time. The final three pocket watches totaled about 70-90k and I also wanted to buy things like inventory upgrades all the weapons so I really needed well over 400k to get all I wanted. The Trade system may be the best way to earn money fast that is even more effective than say the chest in monterrigioni in AC 2 though admittedly I did regret selling the 8 ships I bought for an achievement as it made money making so much slower as I only had access to a 60 cargo ship and a 200 cargo ship to earn money for a while. In short, i do not consider AC liberation to be that bad of a game as I actually enjoyed myself for the most part.

I thunk it was a little too early. Had this come out a few years later, it would have been bigger. I bought but didn’t get to play for 2 years (life intervened) but as a woman of color who is also multiracial…I cannot put into words how much I adored playing this character in this time period. Would love a revamp to give it the attention it deserved.
