On March 7, 1860, Representative Charles H. Van Wyck, a Republican from Orange County, N.Y., delivered a scathing and provocative anti-slavery speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. His words prompted outrage from Southern Congressmen, including a vague suggestion of bodily harm. Less than a year later, three assassins struck. Here's the story.

In New York City, where I live, there is an Expressway named after Van Wyck called the Van Wyck Expressway! It starts from Kennedy International Airport and goes north about 15 miles until the Triborough Bridge to Manhattan! I never knew who the Van Wyck Expressway was named after, now I know! Thank you Ron for informing me!

Fascinating history of Representative Van Wyck. I highly encourage anyone with an interest in the era to read "The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to the Civil War" by Joanne Freeman.

I agree, "The Field of Blood" is well researched and elegantly written! It's an amazing book.

To know how bloody the war was going to be after he survived that violent attack is mind boggling. Tough people back then.

Ron, thank you very much for this very interesting piece of history. Obviously, it certainly is relevant to current events. "As they say, history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes.” And as a matter of fact, unfortunately the same cowards that Wyck faced are alive and well today…..
