Assemble and use a Wooly Board

Wooly boards are frames used to block square armhole and drop -shouldered sweaters. They probably originated in Shetland.
This video is about the Lacis brand Wooly Board. I found the written instructions that come with the wooly board rather sketchy so I have tried to clarify the directions. Once you have your wooly board assembled, you do not need to completely take it apart again. You can store it in about 6 parts for convenience.
When you wish to block a garment, wash it in your sink or a tub with a good quality wool wash, then rinse it changing the water one or two times. Gently press the water out. DO NOT WRING the knitted fabric. I sometimes will put the sweater in a pillow case and put it in my washing machine on spin only for a minute to get rid of the excess water. Then put the sweater on the board and let it stay stretched on it overnight until dry.

Thank you this is great! My wife found a photo of this and asked me to build her one since they're no longer produced. Screen shots of your video enabled me to scale the parts. The tape measure really helped a lot. I'll use leftover scraps of maple from a kitchen makeover I'm doing, stainless bolts and spar varnish. She started knitting me a sweater now and I hope to finish this about the same time she's done knitting. What a neat wife I have!

@@jimsmith8946 as far as I know these wooly boards have been discontinued. There is someone in Shetland making them so ask around. They aren’t so hard to make…

How on earth do you get the arm pieces to stay though? Mine keep falling down.

You must first put your sweater on the board. It partly holds up the arm pieces while you insert them onto the pegs. The underarm hardware slides into the groove on the underside of the top beam. I think that part is not engineered so well, but once you have the arm piece attached to the uprights, finagle the hardware at the cuff. Good luck!

I bought a used one from a fellow Ravelry member. Thanks for this. Would love more insight on how to actually use it for various types sweaters. The arm pieces seem a bit long and too flat across the top so maybe some alterations from a woodworker could be helpful
