Thanks for a nice Ovada Bhante. On the flipside to your comments, there are also teachers who may be a little 'rough' or stern on the outside, which people typically don't enjoy the feeling of; however their inner qualities and teachings are very valuable. One can then miss out on that value, if one is put off by the exterior. Have you encountered this as well ?

It can be. Usually people will associate with teachers because they find them inspiring. Actually the rough qualities that a teacher has can be part of their attraction for certain people. One can encounter this quite often. If one feels no connection at all to a teacher, it may not be a good idea to associate with them. This is the case regardless of whether their manners are rough or smooth. Once one chooses a teacher, one should be aware that the initial feeling of inspiration will wear off. After the initial inspiration wears off, rough qualities that initially seemed minor can become more off-putting. At this time one has to keep in mind that one is associating to grow in the Dhamma. As long as one is growing, the association is a good one, even if the teacher seems rough and the training difficult.

Reminds me of a line in the Tao, what is a good man but a bad man's teacher? What is a bad man but a good man's work?
