Ultramarines are known as defenders in Ultramar, but they never even once seen them fight outside of it, bolters shooting down people, flamers burning flesh to ashes, tanks running over the enemies. They may not be the same, but they are definitely no different to each other, that, and they took back the rest of the planets that were already independent on their own, back to the imperium, planets that were just defending themselves from invaders that just showed up out of nowhere. So yeah, the two sides of the same coin. Funnily enough, sure the night lords are batshit insane, but they legit have the lowest casualties of any of the 18-20(depending on both times they were still okay) legions combined during the great crusade. Sure, they leave the planets they conquered traumatized beyond insanity, but leaving them a lot more alive than the rest of the legions. And, if any of the planets the Imperium already conquered starting revolting, which, mind you, planets that would face the likes of entire legions of imperial fists head on, would actually surrender and apologize the moment they hear that the night lords are chosen for the task.

Tbf that’s because space marines are only sent out when shit has hit the fan and you’re pretty sure that you’re going to use. IIRC after the Indomitus Crusade there is a million or so individual space marines that’s spread out across the Milky Way. That’s a lot of ground to cover.
