Any sound comments on the SEM4 digital audio remaster (DAR) technology upsampling?

Hey DS! So the DAR tech does help sonically - you'll hear it in the layering and boosting the dynamic range a bit. However, these improvements are VERY subtle. If you're looking for a different sound for your SE180, get the SEM 4 based on the DAC chip(s) rather than DAR if you're considering it. Hope that helps!

Very useful. I've got the sem 1 and loving it. I'd also like more openness and a wider sound stage with some genres. Using some Sennheiser ie600, timeless 7hz, audeze LCD2c and aging shure 846s (love them). Musical tastes: very broad, from complex classical, baroque, folk, female vocals (Loreena Mckennitt, Lana Del Rey...) and anything that makes me want to move. Any thoughts on which other SEM might be a good add ON appreciated. I'm thinking the SEM 2. However, from your review, the 4 might be interesting but I wonder if its different enough to the SEM 1 (I'll look through your more detailed notes).

The SEM4 is an excellent choice and our recommendation out of those two! That said, they are both an improvement over the SEM1 (to our ears) so you would be very likely to be happy either way.

@@moon-audio rewatching this and thinking about an sem. It was very very hard to remove the SEM 1 (took 2 people and a lot of pulling). I was listing to a very old Sony nwzx2 and preferring the detail and presentation on that over my A&K SE 180. It's more precise and engaging too. Rewatching the video I started wondering if the sem 3 might be a better option, particularly with the Sennheiser IE600, for classical, female vocals and more intricate, complex music than the SEM 4. Any thoughts very much appreciated!

Hi I purchased Astell & Kern SE 180, but I have a question about Bluetooth Codec setting. Which setting is best between LDAC - audio quality optimization and LDAC connection quality optimization. Thanks in advance

If you have no connection issues, then audio quality optimization will sound the best!

@@moon-audio is the SEM-2 that much darker/warmer than the 4? I do listen to a fair amount of jazz and classical, but also love detail and imaging.

We think the SEM4 is just a bit more neutral/balanced than the SEM2. If you're on the fence, do remember that the SEM4 allows for about 14 hours of playback, more than any other SEM card to date. Very efficient, and still on the warm side of the current SEM spectrum! 🙂

It's between the SEM2 and the SEM4. The SEM2 brings out the lower end impact of your music in a way where it adds to the bass bringing out the natural dynamics in your classical music. The SEM4 is the best for imaging and soundstage, so if you want to feel like you are in the fourth row at a live concert it's the closest to that of the SEM modules.

We find the new SEM4 to be many of our favorites here in the office! You'll likely be happy with either, but I find the sound of the SEM4 to be the best with soul music.
