Aston Martin Vantage - A Porsche Enthusiasts Verdict ?

As a Porsche Enthusiast I had to try out one of the 911's competitors. The Aston Martin Vantage is special, it's seriously quick, has striking looks and you soon realise that the chassis engineers have done as good a job as the designers - which is praise indeed. The engine may be from Mercedes but the chassis is pure Aston.
But would I change from a Porsche ? this video has a verdict.

Cars are all about how they make you feel. I've been lucky to have owned consecutively a Maserati, a Ferrari, 2 Porsches (latest one was a GT3) and... an Aston. Right now, the Aston makes me feel awesome. I love my Vantage. It ticks all my boxes. Glad to have had the experience of the different brands.

Hey Roger Greetings from New Zealand. A Vantage was mine for a full day of test driving, out into the hills. What delight! But!!! I acquired a Jaguar F-Type V8 SVR. Superior all around, but!!! The Vantage is the sexiest beast, by far!!!

Excellent, refreshing and unbiased review from a dedicated Porsche fan. I have the latest Vantage for reasons of exclusivity and the fact that it will always (in my opinion )win a beauty competition against the 911. But to choose between the two? - a close call. Well done.

This is a beautiful car but the front headlights are a bit small and needs to be bigger and make a bolder statement. Everything else is very unique and indeed a work of art. I love the interior and I think it looks better than the 911 992 on the inside. The fact that this car has a Mercedes AMG engine with their electronics inside makes this car a winner. Would I take this over the new Porsche? Yes but that doesn't mean this car is better than the Porsche, it's simply a matter of taste and you can't go wrong with either car. I absolutely love this car! I’ve been driving Porsches for 40+ years but yes, I’d switch if it wasn’t quite so expensive. I’m now at an age where a true GT car makes a lot of sense. But.......and it’s a huge but, it would be very very difficult to bailout on a marque that is truly in my soul.

i personally wouldn't have a sports car with four seats. so my choice would be between the aston and one of the caymans. i think porsche now offers one with the flat six engine, and i would be taking a close look at that one.

Fantastic video and review, loved the Bond theme. What a stunning and fantastic car but one thing that really bugs me on a really aggressive and cool rear end they've put those silly little exhaust tips on!!!!

Another well compiled review Roger, quality presentation as we have come to expect from your good self. As much of a fan of Aston Martin that I am there are a few design elements that don’t sit well with me, perhaps a second or even a third closer look might alter my initial reactions. Would I part with my Porsche even if money was no object ? No, it’s taken me almost 65 years to finally own a brand that I fell in love with as a youngster and never expected to - ever. Maybe next time around 🤔 ? Thanks for sharing & look forward to seeing your next video. Geof

@@RogerBaileyOnCars I fell in love with porsche at 14. Currently I'm 19, have a very good job/dont live at home either. Went to go buy a 2016 cayman but they wanted 12,000 pounds for the insurance so I had to settle for a 300hp BMW 2 series. Hopefully i can join porsche at 21 when my insurance goes down. Absolutely desperate to have one. Its crap watching my stepdad in a large range of premium cars (new vanquish s, Bently continental GT, porsche targa 4s and 5 more). I want to join him on his tours

I'm sticking with 911 too. For all the reasons you cited, but mostly because it just didn't give me the fizz when I drove it like my 911 does.

Well Roger at this level I don’t expect a car built on borrowed tech if I wanted a AMG i would go to Mercedes. I would definitely not give up my Porsche for this car as it does not come close to a Porsche refinement.

Great video RB. You can't blame Aston for using the Mercedes engine though. They're making some great engines at the moment that sound even better than they go. :-))... Your No1 Stalker. PS - I'd stick with a 911 over the Aston... Given the chance to own either!! :-))... PPS - When are you going to be driving the new Taycan?

I know you've done some hybrids, but ever thought about doing a video on a full "EV"? A Tesla for instance?

I bought a new Vantage to replace a 911 Turbo 991.2 and I’ve not regretted it. I found the 911 quite bland, something I’ve not said about the Vantage. I’m also a 981 Spyder owner and enjoyed your new Spyder review. I’m very keen to upgrade my Spyder but really want a PDK this time. I did notice you’ve picked the non bucket seat option. How do you feel they suit the car?

Vantage is a stunning car and more exciting than a 911, I hear 2020 will bring pdk equipped 718 spyders & GT4's as for my seats, my wife cant easily manage the buckets, she had a skiing injury

Thanks for the speedy reply. I specced heated sports buckets in my 981 Spyder, but I’m in in 2 minds about which way to go with 718 Spyder. I will probably use it for the occasional track day, but as I intend to keep this one for a long time I feel the sports seats might be the better option. I had the sports seats in my 987 Spyder and liked them but I bought that secondhand. Guess the market prefers the sports buckets for resale but if I’m keeping mine for a long time I might taking into consideration my ageing limbs. I look forward to some more Spyder content in the future.

the fuel tank is very slow to take in petrol and can splash back when filling up.

I really feel they have lost their way. They are GT company but now want to be Sports Car company. Loved the older cars, they looked masculine, elegant and sophisticated. The interior with all the buttons looks just too busy. TBH I'd rather take the poor man's Aston (F Type)...

Very nice review Roger. About the car, so much confusion in lines of the car, almost a Japanese look to it, inside and out. Too much noise and even though it is more powerful than a Porsche 992 on paper, it is slower. Value retaining wise, it is one of the worse on the market...... I will stick to Porsche ;)

how ridiculous to think that because the labels on the drive modes do not display the word 'comfort' that the modes offered are insufficient. for god's sake! they can put 'soft, softer, and softest on them if they wanted to. remark on how they feel not the label. it's not as if drive mode labels are some sort of SAE standard. lol.
