A mere ten-kilometer boat ride from Mandalay lies what some people call the largest pile of bricks in the world at Mingun. This astonishing pile of bricks was intended to be the largest pagoda in the world. It was never finished, and it was badly damaged in an earthquake. Yet, what remains is an incredible sight.
Guarding the entrance to the pagoda are two equally massive chinthe - the mythical creatures that protect pagodas in Myanmar. Both have lost their heads, but they are impressive even without them. And nearby is a 90-ton bell that once held the record as the largest functioning bell in the world. Next to that is the gorgeous Myatheindan Pagoda all in white.
As an easy morning trip from a jetty on the Irrawaddy River, you couldn't ask for more. In fact, just the boat ride to get to Mingun was an attraction in itself. It is a test of your balance to walk the planks just to get to the boat.
Cheers,
Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

Thank you. I'm glad the fun aspect of the trip came across, because it really was a lot of fun. It's rare that a little day trip like that works out so well. I could simply stroll down the street from my hotel to the river, hop across six gangplanks to get to my boat, chug upstream for an hour, and find some quite astonishing sights at the end of it. It was just all so easy and yet so quirky and fun to do. It was a good day.

I didn't do anything special, if I remember right. It always takes a lot of time to download the video files to my computer and then make a backup copy on an external drive. And then I'm recharging batteries and doing other technical stuff. A surprising amount of time goes by once I get on the computer and start fiddling with all this stuff and processing and editing video files. I'm actually a pretty low-energy guy. A boat trip like that out to Mingun and touring not one but two pagodas and seeing a historic bell is more than enough for me in one day. 🙂 I don't think I would have had the energy to head out into Mandalay to see something else even if I wanted to.

Thanks. I wasn't actually expecting that little trip to be as interesting as it turned out to be. The boat ride alone was enough to keep me entertained, especially with having to walk across six boats just to board my own boat. And then to have the unfinished pagoda, the giant guardian Chinthe, a 90-ton bell, and a beautiful white pagoda at the end of the journey. There were actually other things to see at Mingun that I didn't have time for.

Thanks for sharing ... Myanmar's a country I would've liked to travel but looking at your videos is a marvellous way of armchair travel. Mandalay has the ambience of the poor rural part of a colonial country of SE Asia so far from what I'd seen. It's amazing the people of Myanmar keep to their sarongs instead of discarding them for trousers!

You're right. Traditional clothing is still very common in Myanmar. That's one of the charms of the country. The women wear very beautiful and elaborate outfits, and not just on special occasions. It's everyday wear for them. And I think the majority of the men still wear the traditional longyi. It's interesting to see them constantly tying and untying them and adjusting them as they get in and out of cars or stand up or sit down. And, of course, lots of people still apply the traditional thanaka on their faces.

Since I'm interested in bicycles, I spoke with him briefly. He'd rented the bicycle from his hotel, of course, and used it to ride down to the jetty. And he wasn't sure if it would be useful at Mingun. Maybe you can ride around the area and go exploring. It kind of makes sense. I often wished I had my bicycle with me. But I'm not sure if he was anticipating having to carry it across so many shaky gangplanks to get on and off the boat. 🙂 As I followed behind him, I was worried he'd fall into the water or smack somebody in the head with the wheels.

@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't know the full story when I included that little "Fun Fact", but apparently there have been numerous attempts made already to raise the bell to the surface. Some of these were well-funded projects from quite large organizations with resources from several countries. Of course, none of them have been successful so far. Simply locating the bell at the bottom of the muddy river is difficult enough. You'd think with modern technology, you could just point some radar gizmo at the river and find it, but I guess it isn't that easy. That's why we need James Cameron to swoop in and get the job done. I can just imagine the documentary he'd make afterwards. 🙂

I remember that it rained very heavily once or twice in Yangon while I was there. And even the streets of downtown Yangon got flooded. I had to walk back to my hotel, and the water in the street almost came up to my knees. But I was surprised when I went to Bagan and Mandalay that it didn't rain hardly at all. I thought it was the rainy season up there, but it didn't rain. It was always cloudy and windy, but there was no heavy monsoon rain. I'm in Kuala Lumpur right now, but I'm planning to go back to Myanmar in a couple of weeks. How do you think the weather will be in Myanmar in August? Will I get very wet? 🙂🌧🌧🌧

@@PlanetDoug Mandalay and bagan are located at the middle arid region of upper myanmar, only getting rain at the time of a tropical storm passing through. Mostly, Rainfall is little i e. barely rain throughout rainy season. In contrast, Lower regions and coastal regions of Myanmar including Yangon and Ngapali, which sit near gulf of Martaban or coastal line of bay of bengal, get heavy rainfalls nearly 7 days a week in rainy season, i.e. no day without rain. In August, apart from Middle regions of Myanmar, you may get wet, umbrella is a necissity. If you come back in August, you should take direct flight to Mandalay, and roam around upper middle myanmar. Coz if u take bus from ygn to mandalay in rainy season, there are some risks like water-flooded parts of highway road, and road safety, etc... Favourable time to travel is November to May, all sunny days n no rain if not any storm. Plz explore places in Mandalay more like Ku-Tho-Daw Pagoda, namely the-world-largest-stone -book pagoda; Shwe-Nan-Taw-Kyaung, to see the real architecture of the Ancient Mandalay Palace; In-wa, where authentic ancient monuments lie and which located at the junction of rivers; Amarapura, which is the ancient city of myanmar before mandalay, at which, Maha-gan-dar-yone Monastery, and U-bein (pronounce Oo-bein) Bridge made of long teak woods tiles for hundred of years. And Below are Fascinating other places in Myanmar worth to see. 1 to 10 is equally worth to visit. 1 Ka-law, the trekking region, with the backdrop of beautiful Shan Hills. (Shan-State, the front of Myanmar) 2.Pin-da-ya, the lime cave, Pone-ta-lote lake and grove of age old beautiful banyan trees (Shan-State, the front of Myanmar) 3.Pyin-Oo-Lwin, the mountain beautiful town of colorful flowers, pine trees and cherries. (Mandalay Division, the chest of Myanmar) 4.Inlay lake, the foot paddling fishermen and floating village (Shan-State, the front of Myanmar) 5. Mogok, the region of Burmese Rubies (Shan-State, the front of Myanmar) 6.Myit-Kyi-Na, The confluence of N'Mai Kha and Malikha rivers, the birthplace of the Irrewady river. (Kachin State, head part of Myanmar) 1 to 6 exist in Upper Myanmar. 7 to 10 in lower Myanmar. 7. Kyaik-Htee-Yoe, The golden rock pagoda on the hills of Daww-Na mountain ranges. (Ka-Yin State, thigh of Myanmar) 8. Pha-An, the picturesque region channel through lime caves, stretching green paddy fields along with mountain ranges washing into the sea (Ka-Yin State, thigh of Myanmar) 9. Ngapali, the pristine beautiful beach facing the bay of bengal. (Ra-kine State, the Back of Myanmar) 10. Myeik city or Mergui Archipelagos in the Andaman sea. (Ta-Nin-Thar-Yi / Tenasserim Division, the Legs of Myanmar) Except from Mandalay area, i.e. the middle part of myanmar, U may encounter rainy days in most States.

It probably also depends on your budget. I think if you come to Myanmar on a short vacation and are willing to spend more money, you can have a very luxurious and easy journey. There are plenty of opportunities for hiring guides and private cars and going on organized tours. But if you are just going to go around on your own on a limited budget, you have to expect it to be more challenging. That's part of the fun and the experience, right? 🙂👍

Right now, I'm planning to return to Myanmar for August (and maybe September). And then I'll come back to Kuala Lumpur after that. Then things get unclear. I might make another non-cycling trip to a nearby country. That would mean leaving my bicycle in KL again and returning here. Doug new info the gopro seems the low light function maybe causing the freezing I'm testing with it off for now. If you face any try off the low light function.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I'll try that. The Low Light function seems to have just two settings: Auto and Off. Mine was set to Auto. I think that is the default. I turned it off, and I'll try that out. To be honest, I don't think the Low Light feature would be of much use anyway. Under even the best situations, the GoPro appears NOT to be designed for low light. It's just not going to work in low light with that tiny sensor. So turning off the Low Light feature probably won't have any negative effects. If it helps prevent some of the freezing I've experience, that's great. By the way, I just bought the Ulanzi V2 Pro kit. So far, I'm very impressed with the cage. It's nice to be able to tuck the GoPro audio adapter into the little slot instead of just having it dangling from the camera. It seems surprisingly well-made for that price.

That looks like an interesting device. A friend of mine suggested plugging an external power bank into my GoPro so that I don't have to change batteries all the time during the day. But then you've got to figure out some way to attach the power bank to your hand grip or tripod or pole. It would be a bit awkward, I'd think. But if the power bank is built into the hand grip itself, that solves that problem. I did a brief search, but I didn't see anything like that for the Hero 7 Black. I'm not sure if it exists.

The Great Bell of Dhammazedi is actually at the place where the Yangon river and Bago river meet not the Irrawaddy river
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're absolutely right. I'm kicking myself for that mistake. And it's pretty obvious, too. The Irrawaddy River doesn't even flow through Yangon. So when this Portuguese fellow took the bell from Shwedagon Pagoda and loaded it onto a raft, he'd naturally be going down the Yangon River toward the Bago. The Irrawaddy is far away. I stuck that "Fun Fact" in there on impulse and I didn't do enough research (or, apparently, enough proofreading). It's a great story, though, isn't it? Wikipedia has a long section on all the various attempts made to locate the bell and then bring it to the surface. I can just imagine the challenges involved. While I was in Yangon, I couldn't help but notice how fast the river's current was flowing and how muddy the water was. It surprised me. Finding, let alone recovering, anything in either the Yangon or Bago rivers won't be easy.

Thank you for your kind sharing. I really enjoy watching your documentary. It reminds me of my sweet memories with my several trips to Mingun with my family and friends. But I have a comment about your title. To reflect the fact, your little adventurous title must be "Astonishing Unfinished Pagoda of Mingun - SAGAING, MYANMAR. Actually Mandalay and Sagaing are two separate regions of Myanmar. Mandalay is situated on the eastern bank of Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River and Sagaing on the western bank of Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy). "Mingun is a town in Sagaing Township of Sagaing Region, north-west Myanmar (Burma), located 11 km up the Ayeyarwady River on the west bank from Mandalay. Its main attraction is the ruined Mingun Pahtodawgyi." Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mingun It is good to know about Mingun Sayadaw (The Venerable Buddhist Monk, whose name is The Venerable Mingun Sayadaw U Vicittasarabivamsa) Guinness Record In 1985, the Guinness Book of Records recorded the sayadaw as a record holder in the Human memory category; the exact entry was Human memory: Bhandanta Vicitsara (sic) recited 16,000 pages of Buddhist canonical text in Rangoon, Burma in May 1954. Rare instances of eidetic memory -- the ability to project and hence "visually" recall material-- are known to science.[1] wikivisually.com/wiki/Mingun_Sayadaw#Guinness_Record

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Of course, you're right that Mingun is located in Sagaing Region, not Mandalay Region. 🙂 I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote the title, I guess. I was thinking of it as a day trip from Mandalay city. Going to Mingun is something a visitor would do while staying in Mandalay even though they are technically crossing the river over into the Sagaing Region. I actually knew about Mingun Sayadaw. I remembering reading about him and how he was so famous for his good memory. But I completely forgot about him when I went to Mingun. I forgot that he spent much of his life at the monastery in Mingun. Thanks for reminding me. I often wish I had a better memory. I've read many books and learned many things in my life, but then I forget it all. If I remembered everything I ever read, I'd be much smarter today. 😃

If was completed It would had become the equivalent of THE THREE GREAT STUPAS of Sri Lanka. They had to get help from Sri Lankan engineers to make the Stupa earthquake proof Like they Have done in every massive Stupa in Sri Lanka. They have laid special bricks in the main pressure points of the Stupas. They also have included half burnt and unburnt bricks in special spots where they act as shock absorbers, thus those three great stupas have survived millennia of earthquakes and natural disasters. Here, the big structure just seems to be simply stacking up bricks just to be big. In contrary, Shewdagon pagoda was built around 2500 years ago,as high as pyramids and technically parallel to those pyramids, having internal secret chambers etc.

I was thinking about that, too. I'd be curious to hear what an engineer would say about the construction techniques used to build this pagoda. And I never did learn what this unfinished pagoda looked like on the inside. Was it solid all the way through? Or were there rooms and courtyards in there? In the past, you could climb all the way to the top along those stairs and perhaps see more of how it was constructed. But now you can only see it from the outside.

Just started watching about 6mins in Doug.. it seems your GoPro footage is a bit jittery this time around. Did you change your settings?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed that, too. I didn't change any of the settings on the GoPro. I think the jitteriness was caused by my computer when I rendered the video. In the KZfaq video, I can see a lot of jitteriness starting at 3:20, for example. But when I look at the original video, it is smooth and clear. So it wasn't the GoPro. I'm still limited to using Windows MovieMaker and a very basic underpowered computer. So when I export the final video and I try to use my computer to do other things at the same time, it goes a bit wonky, I think. Another thing that bugged me in watching the video clips afterwards is that it goes up and down and up and down as I walk and have the camera pointed ahead of me. I think maybe I was just getting lazy and I wasn't holding the camera as steady as I could have. I don't think the GoPro's legendary stabilization software can compensate for me waving the GoPro around like a mad person. 😃 Have to be more careful in the future, I think.
@WanderEats
@WanderEats 5 жыл бұрын
@@PlanetDoug I've seen several videos on GoPro's stabilization which is great I felt. I felt it was proven when you strapped the GoPro on your e-Bike earlier in Bagan but the external mic was a life saver for sure. Btw I use Filmora9 for my editing which I find it's simple enough for an old noob like myself.. lol
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I tried Filmora 9 or not. I went looking for better video editing software a while back, but none of them would run on my computer. My computer can't handle even the simplest editing software. So I'm stuck with Windows MovieMaker until I buy a new computer. I thought I would do that on this trip to Kuala Lumpur, but I'm hesitating. Since I'm planning on a quick return trip to Myanmar, I think I'll stick with this old computer for a while yet. I've got enough on my mind without having to deal with a new computer and learning new software. My poor brain couldn't handle it right now.

At 15:26, one of the crew said that the guy with the bicycle wasn't coming back on the return trip. So, I guess he's going to cycle around the area.
@PlanetDoug

Yes, I think that was his plan. And the crewman also asked him if he'd paid for the bicycle, so I guess there was an extra bicycle fee for the boat.

I think about that, of course. It's not normal to make such long videos for KZfaq - especially travel videos. 🙂 Over time, I imagine my style will change and I'll try different things - probably shorter videos, too. At the moment, I'm just kind of recording the entire day and making a video diary of my whole experience. And so the video ends up being pretty long. In fact, this video was much longer originally. A lot more happened on this day that I recorded on video, but I cut it all out. Even I thought it was too long. I was thinking later that I could plan the videos a bit better and then cut up the different experiences into separate videos: One video on the unfinished pagoda; One video on the Mingun Bell; One video on the white pagoda. And each video would focus on that one thing instead of combining them all into one experience. But that would also lose the feeling of a travel experience a little bit. I enjoy trying to capture what it's like to be a foreigner in a place like Myanmar and going on a day trip by ferry - walking to the river, buying a ticket, getting on board the boat, etc. I don't want to just make a video about the history of a pagoda. You can get all that information from Wikipedia these days. But when you include all the events of a day, plus all the random thoughts I have, the video does get a bit long, it's true. 😃 We'll see how it goes in the future. I'll probably experiment with some shorter videos at some point. Right now I'm not thinking about it too much. I'm just shooting everything I experience and not applying much style or fancy editing.

The next day, I went for a long walk up and down the shore of the river, and I witnessed many women working alongside the men carrying very heavy loads on and off the boats. They were carrying heavy bags of cement, corn, and sugar on rickety planks as they unloaded the boats and trucks. I'm not sure I'd be able to do it. I think I'd have to practice a lot to learn how to carry such heavy bags.
