Sometimes I plan the upgrades, sometimes the van does!
I always worried about the alternator going out as it is the heart of my electrical system.. it happened and it was an eye opener, if I was on a big trip or deep in the bush things would get interesting pretty quick!
It has me reconsidering solar and thinking a spare alternator may not be the worst thing to keep on hand, but its hard to know when to draw the line on spare parts you keep in the van.

3 days after completing this mod and I have to say, excellent man! I DID however have to get a 97in belt vs the 95 I initially was suggested, so be mindful of this. Not sure if the actual pulley was different, but that wasn't going on no way no how. Thanks again! -running 15v strong!

On the trucks they have a 1" longer belt for the larger body alternators. You might want to go with one to reduce the tension a little for less side load on all the accessories.

If I bought another Astro I would do the same thing but only right away! Big 3 wiring uprade and the bigger alternator. I swear the van even runs better and has more power in the pedal 😅 Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching! 😁

I also have done this to my astro I installed dr44 160A from 2011 escalade But from 2007 they changed voltage regulator to 2 pin digital control and it can charge only to 13.6 volts So I replaced voltage reg to older model with 4 pins Now it works as should

Good to know and nice work! Neat that the voltage regulator could be swapped, its nice that larger GM vehicles from this era were like lego.

Good to hear 👍 Over a week in and I only wish I had done it sooner, never drops below 14v lowest Ive seen was 14.2v no matter how much I try to bog it down, the van and the electronics are happy 😁 Appreciate the comment, and Thanks for watching!!

Good stuff- I may do the same thing - Make yourself a simple bracket for that coolant line

Thanks! Over a week in and only qualm is I wish I did the big 3 and the bigger Alt sooner! I swear the van pulls better according to the butt dyno 😂 never drops into the 13s no matter what I turn on, if you are going to get a winch/bumper setup its 100% needed the electrical system on these vans is a bit light on a good day 😂 I'm not too worried about that coolant pipe it would probably never rub through. I'll adjust that hose next time the coolant is out and it will look factory, I just like to show the finer details like yourself, everywhere you read everyone says its a direct swap 0 issues which it kinda is if you dont mind a bit of mechanical sloppiness, on these 3rd gens at least 👍

@mtg_hermit Working out great 👍 Daily use, and it never gives me any trouble at all. My system only pulls 30amps max, and the van is pretty light on accessories otherwise, so it isn't being overworked by any means. I can honestly say I would do this upgrade on any Astro thats needs an alternator or has any type of system planned. Just a good upgrade in general, especially if its the lower cost option. As for the brand it is a reman so it's only as good as the parts and refurb but it does appear I got a good one. Thanks for checking in, appreciate the comment! 😁

So what you are saying is the hummer h2 alternator from 2004 work for the astro 2004 as well? You are a genius, my friend! 😎 I wanted to upgrade my alternator for more power, but they are expensive ones. You got the alternator through rockauto, right? Where did you get the upgraded wires? It will definitely bolt up and plug in, may have minor issues like seen in the video but nothing unmanageable for sure. I cant take credit for this many have done it before me across the year ranges, ill include some links there is some good reading in there which explains the downfall of a lot of the high output alternators. That coupled with the availability/cost issue is why I opted to keep it OEM off the shelf GM, I was going to write "mechman elite" on the front housing to be funny but got ahead of myself and forgot 😅 Yes the alternator is from rockauto, and the wiring was originally for a sub that came with the van 👍 www.astrosafari.com/threads/alternator-replacement-size-question.150228/ www.astrosafari.com/threads/cs130d-to-ad244-145-amp-alternator-upgrade-94-astro.111097/

Another question! Do I have to change my battery after installing the high output one it is duralast 800 cold cranking, and 1000 amps rating?

@@3dpowerproduction Nope if your battery is fine now there is no reason to, the alternator will only produce what is demanded of it. I changed my battey months before as it was old and weak. I have a video with me messing with it, eventually it would barely start the van if left overnight so I replaced it. This alternator is essentially a stock item thst comes on a variety of GM vehicles so no worries about compatibitily with the rest of the systems 👍

Do you have a video on the big 3 upgrade? I tried searching but cant find if so. My alternator just went out on my 05 astro and I'm wanting to do the same as you before canada gets too much colder lol

@alwaysgoodinthewoods Thank you so much! Man, it's hard getting the new alternator past those copper sleeves lol. It's still in the positives here on the west coast thankfully 😅
