That is a great Wide field Scope Dave. Pairs well with the 2600MMPro nice and wide FOV. Pretty cool that the tube rings were interchangeable! Congrats, looking forward to seeing what you can acquire with the new setup. CS

Thanks for the vid. I'm anxious to see the comparison photos between this and the SVBony. I'm sure you'll be more than satisfied.

Yes, and perhaps the best comparison will be the Horsehead Nebula, with all those blue stars. That is in the works. Clear Skies!

Hi Dave, re-watching your AT-80EDT as I ordered 1 today. Note these are both made by the same company in China. Thanks

No one ever talks about these scopes in the visual sense. Is it worth it if I have no plans to do AP? I simply want the best grab and go scope that I can afford and it would seem that the AT80ED fits that bill perfectly.

I did a lot of visual astronomy in the past (but light polluted Phoenix has killed that option for me!). I would say that they would, my only concern visually is that they are somewhat slow for visual, being F/6. But then I come from the dob world, where F/4 or faster was preferred. I would also be a little curious about the aperture, as they obviously don't collect as much light as a good 6" or 8" dob, which depending on the model can be quite portable. Depending on what you are going to observe, these scopes would do nicely.

An 80 mm APO costs just as much as a Bresser 127/1200 mm achromat. I wonder which one is overall better. I guess the 127/1200 mm achromat schould be better since the difference in aperture is so big. I would really apreciate your opinion on this :). Thank you!
@DaveUrbanAstro
@DaveUrbanAstro 10 ай бұрын
If you are doing visual astronomy, the achromat would work just fine, it is a telescope for visual use. If you are doing astrophotography, where you need the red, green and blue wavelengths to focus together (or as close together as possible), then you would be looking at the APO. APOs are excellent for astrophotography, achromats are good for visual observations. My two cents worth. CS!

Do you think some of the lack of ED triplet halos in photos comes from better focusing of invisible infra red and ultra violet recorded by the digital camera sensors? I’m thinking of these exact achromat ED/triplet ED 80mm types to work with the 5 kg/11 lb weight limit of a SW az-gti WiFi goto mount, obviously for initial visual only use. You sounded quite satisfied with the visual performance of the achromat ED?

I also have a SVBONY telescope, but the 102mm version and shot in mono - but I do not have any blue halo's. Do you remember to refocus every time you change filter?
@DaveUrbanAstro
@DaveUrbanAstro Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I have filter focus presets setup in Nina, and for the most part it worked well shooting narrowband, which is most of what I shoot as I am in Bortle 8 skies. I can only shoot LRGB if it is the period around the new moon. And I can't shoot long exposures, I capture too much of the brightness of the sky. I am limited to 60 second exposures in LRGB or using my color camera. But even shooting narrowband, there were certain targets where the blue stars would bloat, I am thinking specifically of the region around the Horsehead Nebula comes to mind. Anyways, I am going to shoot it again this winter with the triplet and see if there is a significant difference. We will see. Clear skies!

@@DaveUrbanAstro Interesting. I bought an Astro-Tech 80mm EDT and I have imaged objects including the Horsehead with very bright stars in the field. Excessive halation around bright stars is very well controlled. Even Alnitak was not objectionable despite it being massively overexposed. I really like this telescope, the visual and imaging potential of this telescope is excellent in light of it's very reasonable price. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you try it on the Horsehead. I have my photo of the Horsehead I took with this telescope on Cloudy Nights if you would like a preview of what you can expect from your 80mm EDT.

Great video! Have you had any focus issues? I just started setting mine up and am having an issue reaching focus. To reach focus, I have the focus extended almost the whole way out. I'm thinking it may be because I'm not using my backorderd focal reducer. Any thoughts?
@DaveUrbanAstro
@DaveUrbanAstro Жыл бұрын
I haven't had any focus issues. I use a ZWO EAF and it seems that focus is around 4000 steps, or 20 mm per the barrel markings. What kind of back focus are you shooting for? Typically with this scope you will need a field flattener or a focal reducer/field flattener, and they generally are around 55mm of back focus which matches with the camera. If you don't use a field flattener, then you will not get a nice flat field for your sensor. I use the one from Orion for f5-f7 scopes, they always seem to have it in stock for around $120 dollars if memory serves me right.

Thanks, nice show/tell. Looks like it came out of the same factory as the SVBony. The case is a very nice addition! Didn't go for a 102mm?

Really wanted something in the 500mm focal length range, so looked at the 102mm but decided on the 80mm with 480mm focal length. If I move up in refractors, it would most likely be the 115 or the 130mm size. CS!

@@DaveUrbanAstro My SVBony SV503 80ED f7 is 560mmFL and I like it but wish I had gone for the 102mm. Larger than 102 would be nice but not as easy to grab and go since I have to drive to observation sites.

@@cattaraugustonawanda4426 I had that scope, and I loved it. But the blue halos finally got me to move to a triplet. But I still miss the reach of the SvBony, and I think it is an underrated telescope. Glad you are enjoying it! CS!

Can be used for either visual or astrophotography. Depending on what you are looking for, this scope would be a good choice, no chromatic aberrations, or at least reduced enough that you will not see them.

Can't those ugly blue haloes be removed in post?
@DaveUrbanAstro
@DaveUrbanAstro Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Depending on the size of the halo and whether or not there is any neighboring nebulosity, it would prove difficult not to detect that someone has attempted to remove the halos. It is best to reduce them as much during the capture as possible. I guess it kinda depends on the kind of photographer you are and whether or not you want a good photo or a great photo. Your mileage will vary. CS!
