Astronaut discovers inhabited planet, but it turns out to be Earth in 2580 AC populated by robots

The world of the future is before us. Project Link is an operation to build two machines known as Machine 1 and Machine 2. Their goal is to create a link to a planet that may have intelligent life on it. One of the machines has been traveling through space for over 60 years in search of intelligent life. For 20 of those years, the ship has been fully autonomous. Once the machine is on the chosen planet, communication will be established, and today is communication day.

With all due respect, I think your take on this movie is way off base. I may be wrong, but I don;t think so. He is NOT from Earth. He's from another planet. Witness, he's puzzled by the Jack Daniels bottle. Machine 1 brought him here. He discovered a lifeless planet destroyed by war. He tried contacting his own world to get rescued, but it seems there was some problem finding the right "time frame" to get him. This is referenced in the film. If you notice some of the headlines he reads are referencing the strange machines appearing in the skies. Some are saying it's God returning, others say they're a weapon from an enemy and war is imminent. The war already happened before he arrived. My take? He traveled via machine one, but when they sent his rescue mission (machine 2 ) it came back in the past and was the direct cause of the global war.... which happened BEFORE he arrived,, ie: He was the direct CAUSE of the global catastrophe on Earth and he can never return to his home world...

Screamers told a somewhat similar story but without the time travel and more violence. One of Peter Weller's best movies if folks would look beyond RoboCop.

Because this recap is wrong. He is an alien! He's not human, he's not from Earth, and he's not in the future. Look at the posters at 10:21 - it's Machine 1, it's arrival onto Earth's orbit only accelerated the apocalypse. And he arrived 60 years later.

I looked up the plot recap and in part it said, "There is the moment where Ian Rowe is wandering through the empty landscape and comes across a bottle and records in his log “I’ve found a container. It seems to be covered in the alien language” and when we see what he is referring to it is clearly a Jack Daniels bottle." If this was included in the recap, it would be clear that the main character is not from earth, or does at least doesn't speak English.

Taylor did the same thing in Planet of the Apes. Corn was bread and cultured by the Myans. Corn cobs aren't natural. The second he saw Corn he should have known they were on Earth

So we need to advance robot weapons to far more effectively engage to avoid something like that from happing. Lots of friendly fire, dont eliminate possible water and food sources. Plus leaves recognisable traces and structures.

That indicates there's oxygen in the atmosphere. Though it doesn't indicate whether or not there's gasses that are toxic to breathe.

I avoided watching this episode for years afrer first watching it In fact it was only through on line discussion that i realised people had been equally disturbed by the episode. The effects may seem a bit hokey, but the overall effort and the atmosphere remains the same The death scenes are particularly still vicious and the soundtrack is quite something
