When a friend of mine asked me if I could talk about science in a motivating manner to students, I thought it was a tad condescending to these young learners. I say so because if there is an unbridled joy that someone has for learning, it is students up to the high-school. The higher you climb up the echelons of science, the more bitterness you see amongst its practitioners, and a zombie-ish hurdle for publishing more and more papers. Love lost in the pursuit of a degree, an epithet, in other words.
So I was struggling with what I could talk about. I don't think of science as a pure unadulterated producer of knowledge, as is sometimes perceived in the society in general. We might have gone to space but if you study closely the peripheral areas of Baikonur Cosmodrome (the launchpad of space vehicles in the former USSR) and similar patches, you'll weep at the evidence of the death and misery of hundreds of plants and animals due to cancer and other diseases during the environmental desecration of such glorifying pursuits.
And I don't pretend to be a practicing astrophysicist/ astronomer- I dabble at a tuppence of this science more or less like a person who plays guitar in the evenings after whittling away at his life at some other job.
Ujjwal Poudel and Madhu Sudhan Bhusal were gracious enough to have thought of me as a person who could be giving a special, monthly science talk organized by Deerwalk Sifal School. I was slightly proud of myself when Madhu said that the students were elated to have listened to me. This gave me the courage to post the lecture as a video!!
A cliche-ish self-reflection-cum-lesson repeated itself after having delivered the talk: the biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.
