Not owning a telescope doesn't mean you can't do LOTS of astronomy. With just your own two eyes 'll show you how to see a plethora of interesting things in the night sky and also how to actually use a telescope on a regular basis without actually owning one.
Thank you for watching don't forget to subscribe and hit all notifications as I do regular videos for the new astronomer.

This content is timely, I had my 9 year old daughter and 4 of her friends outdoors star gazing for the first time last night. Exactly constellations , I have 11inch tablet with a free to download Astronomy. Here the children held the tablet at the star shapes and the APP give you constellations. We did get all the early shinning planets too. like you again : ) The next session will be a clear night and the Moon and a moon map. Keep up the content and help... thank you..

Very true...learn the sky with the naked eye before getting a telescope... A couple additional options not mentioned... 1) Binoculars! Yes, a quality pair of 7x50 (or so) for $100-$150 can give you a LOT of star gazing ability! 2) Join a local astronomy club! You can join with having zero equipment...Many clubs also have "club owned" equipment you can take out 'on loan' to use! 3) Attend star parties (either from the astronomy club you join OR through other reach out programs...This allows you to look through a vast range of scopes without needing to buy one yourself!

My 114 / 500 Sky Watcher with rings and no mount wasn't expensive. The TV camera was $42 and an $8 adapter. Eyepieces are $30 each. All worth it and good for a lifetime.

I do a lot of naked eye astronomy and often it's for practical reasons.I was up in the Northumberland National Park camping out last week and I had my Helios Starfield 2x40 binoculars and 5x10 Zeiss Miniquick monocular but due to it been very cold,it got down to -8c!,the optics steamed up so I used my own eyes unaided.

I may sound like a madman, but if you have more or less new phone, that can save photos in RAW format, you already have enough for astrophotography. Find cheapest tripod (I used ~1$ one), go to some park or rooftop and point camera to sky. Play with settings, set exposure time to 5-10 seconds, focus to infinity and make some photos. You can also use specialized programs for stacking photos, you will be amazed how much you can see. I shoot Orion constellation last fall, made around 300 photos. After stacking them I could even Orion molecular cloud complex, red hydrogen clouds all around constellation.

Observe the meteor showers, practice angular measurements with your fingers or hand, enjoy the conjunctions (this year's beginning is being prolific in them), practice star counting to assess the quality of the sky transparency, or learn to deal with the magnitudes, are things that can not only be done but it is even better to do them with naked eyes... Anyway, it is hard to believe that simple 7x50 binoculars with a rudimentary mount (however hand made) are not within the reach of any amateur, just this simple optical instrument already opens up the range of possibilities in astronomical observation.

Ah yes, Astronomy without a telescope. You know, you can even watch many meteors showers, see the full Milky Way Core in dark locations, see the naked eye planets, see and observe the moon, and then, the list goes on and on. All of which don’t actually require a telescope.

Yes! You are absolutely right! To anybody out there that's curious, pick up the phone find a local community astro club, science center, library, whatever, and call them! Our science center just threw a bunch of dobs in the trash that we would of gladly just given to somebody if they would of just asked. We are terrible advertisers, but if you just call someone, I guarantee you, they will have some equipment they'd loan you, give you, share with you, come out, have fun, meet people, and keep your eyes on the sky. Love the vids Jason, keep em coming!

Speaking of not using scopes, I've never had the opportunity to look through a large pair of binoculars. I'm excited to try that someday. I hear you get some kind of weird stereoscopic 3d effect when you do it that makes viewing the stars pretty wild.

I think no telescope is better than buying a cheap telescope. Make sure you have good eyes though. If stars or planets look like they have lines coming out of them, then you need glasses.

Pin this comment to the top, nothing wrong with a department store scope or just a pair of binoculars. It's a real PITA to go dragging around 10 thousand dollars worth of equipment and power to here and there. Nothing better or quicker than a cheap scope you can whip out anytime you want and get your eyes on the target, even if the optics are crap. I've got a really old celestron eduscience something or other, I always have a blast throwing that up for the granddaughters, they don't know about chromatic aberration, nor do they care, it's the experiences that really matter.

Hopefully we can get our cdk24 balanced and working, then it's game on. Also ya I'm at +39 and a half lat.
