@@AstroFarsography This would be soooooo good. Until now there are mainly Photoshop tutorials. I don't like the abo model for Photoshop.

It will depend on the colour difference in the galaxy itself to the background tool. The select sampled colour will be dependant on that. If the whole image has an overall green or blue colour cast, these tools can struggle It's not abandoned, I won't abandon it. I just have had some issues in life that I've had to deal with. I hope to be back to creating regular content soon

Thanks Bill This image didn't need converting as it was saved through APP as a 16/bit TIFF. Even my DSS files are saved automatically as 16/Tiff In DSS when you press save to file, you want to click the drop down box below file name and select 16/bit TIFF Integer and save it like that. And it should be fine from there :)

Thank you Nick If I can find a substitute for Camera Raw from Photoshop in Affinity then I'd drop PS and move straight to Affinity. I'll carry on using Affinity but j can see myself transitioning. I prefer it and I think the UI and response rate is nicer

Hey there Nerrel. So yes, with a DSLR the camera does a small degree of processing inside of it already. That's why the black point is different. What you see out of stacking, or even in your single subs, should be similar or near to the 'start at that point' comment'. From there you can still use thresholds and curves etc, you just don't need to do initial curve stretches to make the data visible :) Hope that helps!

It's quite okay to take a single shot of the Milky way and process it. But, it's s an advantage to take many shots and "Stack" them. The software to stack the images is free. You then take the stacked image into a photo editor like Affinity Photo and follow the processing as outlined. "Stacking" helps get more data and also helps get rid of noise. Take the whole process of learning slow. So whether or not you stack, it doesn't change the process. You can stack in Affinity, but I didn't get as good results and I haven't tried it with V2 Affinity Photo. So, I think I'm at the stage of trying to work it out again. Best comment I ever heard is that "astronomy is a slow process." Don't be in a rush to get results. Keep reading.

Haha yep was expecting this. I'd move to Affinity I think but Photoshops Camera Raw feature really keeps me there. If I can find something similar or alternative in Affinity then I'd migrate fullyn

@@AstroFarsography Affinity has a develop mode. You can find it in the top left - there a buttons for raw development, image manipulation, tone mapping and liqufy. And as alternative there is also rawtherapy . I use rawtherapy for the start processing like vignetting, exposure correction, white balance etc. You can also copy/paste the settings from one picture to others and batch process them.

@@gnashermedia well well this is extremely good to know. I'll look into that for sure then. If that does the same as Camera Raw then dang I don't see what's keeping me with Photoshop. Select and Mask, maybe 🤔 but is that one tool worth the price 😂

I find Gimp surprisingly capable though but it has its limitations to be expected from free software I also gave more Gimp tutorials planned for release this month too

Hmm. I thought increasing the DPI was akin to keeping a bit of resolution. Maybe I used the wrong term there - do you know what that actually is so I can learn from it please?

@@AstroFarsography ​ When you decrease pixel dimensions, you lose image data. Resolution is a term that can only be used in connection with physical dimensions, hence the unit dpi (or ppi) dots (or pixels) per inch. The resolution field in any image editing program sets the phisical size of the image. ie.: your roughly 7600px x 5100px image would be 76"x51" at 100 dpi, your 2500px x 1600px image will only be 25"x16". If you drop the resolution of this 2500x1600 image to 50dpi, your physical dimensions will be 50"x32" or if you increase the resolution to 200dpi, then the dimensions will drop to 12.5" x 8", but your image data remains exactly the same.

@@pilsyppah right that clears a few things up for me thanks. So really for resizing the image for performance purposes going from 72 to 100dpi really didn't do much as I just ended up making the image bigger again and what not. But since I made the resolution smaller I still removed information and lost details then?

This is a marvelous tutorial, but also very complex for beginners. Numbers '0' & '255' have lost all detail. You cannot recover from there. Well, that's the theory. Your. Numbers ideally are between 1 - 254. Just try to learn some of the techniques and adjustments. Then build on your knowledge. I would say it's impossible to replicate this image trying to copy the method. But you can learn a lot. If we are tired when we edit asto photos, we likely will do things a lot differently - & possibly not like the results. For myself, I want to go back to old data images of mine and try to apply this method, because I know my method was not like this. Be patient- enjoy learning, because you will never stop.

Hi mate, I just updated my Affinity to the most recent and I still can see the View in the top bar and studio settings. I've had a quick look and really the only recommendations I can give you without seeing your PC is to either uninstall & reinstall Affinity, or to hold control and double click the Affinity icon which should (apparently) reset Affinity back to default.
