If you have ever been interested in Astrophotography, now is the time to get into it. Star trackers are more affordable than ever, and image processing is about to get much easier after you watch this tutorial. In this video I will show you what I think is the easiest and best method for processing your astro photos.
UPDATES:
5/10/2021 - The newest versions of SIRIL contain all the scripts you need now, no need to download them from me anymore. For the updated way to import them please visit their official site:
free-astro.org/index.php?titl...
5/01/2020 - You do not need to download the script I described in the video anymore. I was incorrect in assuming you needed BOTH darks and biases calibrated to the light frames. YOU DO NOT. Biases are only used for calibrating FLAT frames. So the script included above with the older versions of Siril for "DSLR no flat" is the correct one to use.

The main thing I’ve learned is to not push the data. I realize that I probably have crap data and I push it further than it can handle. So I don’t bring out any more dust. Just noise. I have to go back and reprocess the data I have to make it look cleaner.

Great viddy, I'm an fairly experienced astrophotographer who discovered Siril just yesterday. I usually post-process with Startools and Gimp but was having issues processing some data with severe vignetting. When learning Siril I wasted a lot of time just trying to crop 😆. For a tutorial that uses Siril in combination with Gimp, you can check out Nebula Photos' tutorial here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9OSiNCLsbXJg6c.html Must say though, from the thumbnail, this tutorial seems to produce better results. Cleaner background. Interested to see what Scott does differently, and how I can apply that for less background noise, assuming I find the equivalent operations in GIMP.

Very informative video that was nicely done. I'm not exactly a beginner but I'm MUCH further from being a seasoned expert. I typically do all of my post processing in Photoshop after stacking with Deep Sky Stacker. It seems Siril does a great job getting the background image to a good starting point for more advanced post processing. I'll certainly be giving this a try. Thank you very much for making this video and proving it pays to keep one's mind open to new techniques.

Thank you for this Scott, I have struggled with Siril for years, and the English side of it was very poorly explained and documented, yet I knew it was better than DSS. The trouble is we don't use it every day so old folks like me forget easily. Thanks again. By the way, when creating the folders ready for using the scripts, it is vital that they are ALL lower case, lights, flats, darks and biases, or the script will fail.

Interesting... I don't have Photoshop and post processing is a pain, plus I am an old newbie and trying to learn a bunch of difficult softwares is driving me crazy. This video was promising and after I get to grips with SIRIL I sincerely hope to reach better results with my astrophotos quickly. Thank you

As a total beginner to Astro photography this was very helpful thank you.. I’d love some of your videos to be done on the ioptron skyguider you have and also ASIAIR pro if you have one or getting one, (I have ASIAIR pro on order) although I’ve watched all videos I found on YT so far on both, you explain step by step much better than most videos I’ve watched which is very helpful for total beginners into Astro photography ..cheers and thanks for doing the videos you have done so far.

Although the interface to SIRIL has under gone a major change since this video, I eventually worked out where everything you used was located. As others have said, its re-vitalised my pictures instead of the repetitive changes in Photoshop that probably just went in circles

This video is fantastic!! There is very little tutorial info around on Siril, and their own help and tutorials are poor. I had done a stack without darks, bias, flats and it was straight forward. But as soon as I tried using darks etc., it got very confusing, very quickly. Superb, - thanks very much. Would you consider adding "Siril" in the title of the youtube video, as I nearly didnt watch it based on the Title, but if I had of known it was about Siril I would have seen it sooner

Hi MM I don't own a dedicated astro-camera so unfortunately not yet! But you could try assembling the images in DSS (which is way easier for dedicated cameras) and take the result into SIRIL for the stretch and some post.

Brilliantly presented video. Subscribed! I know this is a year old, did you end up doing a "how to take the photos?" I've only just started and M42 has been my 'first' and the results aren't brilliant, but only using a Nikon D750 with a 300mm lens while i wait for the star tracker and telescope i have on order.

Just a production suggestion: You might consider moving your camera back and up a little and pointing it down slightly. In order to see the screen, I want to watch in full screen, but when the camera switches back to you, I feel like I'm looking up your nose the whole time. Sorry for the criticism. You have great content and well explained.

Thank you Scott for this Video . I was about to toss in the towel with all the Astro Processing when I came across Siril and then your Video . I'm glad we can get a decent Image with just the steps you've highlighted but now I'm curious on what else we can do with Siril and all the "other" buttons . Would you consider making another Siril Video and try and cover some of the other available items Siril offers ? All the on-line Videos are in French and the You-Tube Translator is rubbish . Thanks for helping us out . BTW , after getting a decent Image from Siril I ran it through Topaz Labs DeNoise Ai and got a Wow moment . All the pieces are falling into place . Scott..............

Excellent tutorial. Easy to follow and understand. I do have a crazy question relating to the use of various file formats. I am trying to stay away from Photo Shop for $$ reasons. With that being said, I do like to use DSS. Is it possible to take the final output file from DSS (TIFF) and convert it to a FITS, so that it could be read and post processed with SIRIL? Thanks for posting this helpful information.
@DenimSuitPhoto
@DenimSuitPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to convert it. You can open up TIFF files in Siril
