With the help of my friends at B&H Photo I was lucky enough to spend a beautiful night under the stars in Mount Rainier National Park to find out if the new astro-oriented primes are really up to snuff.
Since there are already enough write-ups on these lenses offering top-tier nerdism with studio lighting, hardcore pixel peeping and technical readouts of microcontrast to keep even the most voracious researcher occupied for weeks I decided to focus more on the intangible aspect of photography. Are these lenses enjoyable to use? Do they weigh down my backpack like a brick of lead (I’m lookin’ at you, Sigma), focus easily, and deliver consistent, beautiful results? In short, if I was a passionate photographer with a limited budget, and I am, which one would I buy?

Thanks for this helpful video. Not to many people make the effort to astro test these lenses like this. I actually debated about the voigtlander 21 vs the sony 24 a few months back for astro. I ended up with the voigtlander 21 simply because it was wider and the only other F1.4 is the Sigma 20 which does not take threaded filters.

Would've been nice to see the lenses stopped down a bit to f2 or 2.8 where vignetting and coma almost goes away entirely.

I love your videos! Any chance you have or will compare the Sigma art 20mm 1.4 and the new Sony 20mm 1.8 g ? I work as a northern light guide and have used the Sigma for years with an adapter on my sony. Now the lens unfortunetely broke and I'm wondering if I should really buy the Sony 20mm or if I go with the Sigma again.

Thank you for this comparison 👍🏼 I use for astrophotography my Sony 16-35 F 2.8 GM but now I'm looking for a faster lens. Weight is also a topic as I do it during mountaineering in the Alps. The new Sony 20mm F 1.8 looks great (24mm is not wide enough for me; for panos you need more shots), the best would be the Sigma 14mm F 1.8 but it's so heavy 🙈

you're better off finding a second hand 24 1.4 and a laowa 15mm f2. i have this setup with a tamron 28-75 too, and its insane. im glad i didnt buy the gm 16-35 its huge and heavy and 2.8. also the sharpness of the laowa and 24 are ridiculous

By the numbers on B&H, the Voigtlander takes up less space than the Sony but weighs a quarter of a pound more. 1.0 versus 1.25 pounds doesn't seem like much but it is the difference between a plastic and a metal housing.

Hope my firin 20mm that arrives today is a good copy. I went for this over the Sony 20mm f1.8 because mint condition went for $390. Currently using the Samyang 14mm f2.8 and don't like it. The strong vignetting and strong distortion did it for me.

Especially with the announcement of the Sony 20 1.8 now, I'd love to see a comparison between 20mm and 24mm for night. I bought the 24 1.4 Sony in November and haven't really had a chance to take it out night shooting. My history is with the Samyang 14 or Canon 35 1.4. I'm worried about the width honestly. Would be neat to see the direct comparo. Thanks!

To get rid of the vignette, you could stop down a bit. Maybe 1.4 to 2 or even 2.8. I know that destroys the purpose of having a 1.4, but it fixes the vignette

Hi Nate, just noticed that in the video, in the part on the Voigtlander, you've selected a Lightroom profile correction for a Voigtlander Heliar lens. These profiles are fairly different between lenses, and I was wondering if you had tried the Nokton profile, and if so what the result of that profile was. I did find your review on the internet as well, could you tell me what profile was used there? I am considering the Voigtlander, and yours is the only review on this subject I could fine. Thanks for the great video!
@Nateinthewild
@Nateinthewild 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, at the time I filmed this I don't believe there was a Nokton profile in Lightroom so I went with the closest (based on what Lightroom suggested). I'm definitely interested in trying out a different profile now that it's available though, and I'll let you know what I find!

@@Nateinthewild That explains it. It would be great to see if that would improve the vignetting. Thanks for the reply!
@Nateinthewild
@Nateinthewild 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericvandenbandt You know, I don't think it would change much. The vignette is an under-exposure of the corners, so you can only "improve" it so much before it just gets super noisy. I believe there's a few examples of that in this video, where the vignette correction raises the shadows in the corners so far it actually looks worse.

@@Nateinthewild Totally! Can't wait to see what else you have in store! To your note about the focus on Sony lenses being too fast, or sensitive, I totally agree. I use manual focus a ton while photographing birds for example. It gets rather frustrating how fast I can pass the sweet spot. Practice helped me learn to have better control over it, but I have sure missed a ton of shots along the way.

I’ve worked something out from other comparisons of Voigtlander lenses on Sony and Leica. Basically the thicker filter stack in front of the sensor on Sony and maybe the phases AF (my conjecture on the last point) do impact the performance. QED the results are spot on for Sony but, excuse the pun, absolutely fail to paint the picture of how Voigtlander lenses work on other systems, specifically Leica. Ultimately though maybe the bigger question is why Voigtlander are letting lenses that perform badly on Sony digital sensors out of the factory while at the same time creating a tailored mount. Conclusion buy Sony for Sony.

They are fantastic lenses, but f/2.8 isn't fast enough to make me consider the purchase. I already have the 16-35mm f/2.8 so if I am adding a lens in that focal length range then the aperture needs to be significantly different for me to justify the expense.

He found that the Sony lens performed the best out of the three lenses that he tested. Do you disagree with his findings after examining the data that he provided? It is up to you to decide, based on the evidence, which lens performed best. I do appreciate that Nate offered us the conclusion that he came to, but that's not gospel (even though I agree with him).
