What a great video Brent and I found it very helpful indeed, i was looking at getting a lens for Astro, so we’ll timed. I think I will go for the Sam yang. Have a good winter season! P.S im in Wales, UK and my favourite constellation is Pleiades, the reason being, its a great way to spur youngsters interest in astro, as I always ask "how many stars can you count in that constellation?" it gets them starting to really look.

Another great gear video - just moved into Canon and the R6, so I have a lot to learn about the RF and EF series. Regarding the RF35, would you recommend that over the adapted EF 35 IS USM? Some of the wide RF primes seem to be relying a great deal on in-camera or post-process correction. Perhaps I’m just old/old-fashioned.

One of these nights I need to get out and try some astrophotography. I live in Arizona and where I go fishing it's completely dark at night with no city lights. I've got a 25mm 1.7 for my lumix g9 which I think would work well.

Hi, first thing: I'm in Wisconsin and my favorite Constellation is Orion. It's one of the few things I like about winter. It's also where I was able to get my first Astrophotos years ago. M42. Also regarding Lumecube, I found an unexpected non photography use for my Panel-Pro; shark tooth hunting at night on vacation in South Carolina. And one more thing you reminded me that I should buy an RF T-mount to replace my old EF. If you don't mind which one did you get? Thank You! Terry

From Utah and my favorite constellation is Cassiopeia. It is my sanity check for locating Polaris as the sky starts to get dark - and it matches my initial :) Could you speak about the Orion image at the 0:09 mark? It looks like you used a diffusion filter of some sort. It gets expensive to keep buying filters only to have them be too strong or not strong enough. Take care.

@BrentHall
@BrentHall 8 ай бұрын
The 15-35 is an amazing lens and great for astro and landscape. It's just too expensive and big and heavy for my needs. Plus, I already have the 24-70 and 24 1.8, which is kind of an overlap. I personally have kind of quit doing ultra wide astro stuff. Lately, I've been enjoying longer focal lengths for it, and if I want to go wider, I'll either do a pano or use my 16-35mm. That's just me, though.

Hey@@BrentHall I have an R6 but am tempted by the Sony a7iv. I shoot a lot of sports, some landscapes, but really want to get into astro as it fits in with my backcountry experiences. I'm super happy with the low light performance of the R6, buy wondering what your opinion is with only 20MP. Love the R5, but it's just a little out of my price range.
@BrentHall
@BrentHall 2 жыл бұрын
@@sunnyvalejedi Well first off, I've never used that Sony, so I couldn't give any opinions on it or how does against the Canons. All I can tell you is I've personally never had an issue with with 20mp of the R6. I've printed quite big with it (4x6 ft) I've cropped pretty heavily, and often with wildlife and still had no issues with getting usable images for clients, social media and smaller prints. I've also never had a client tell me that 20 mp wasn't good enough or that anyof my my R6 delivered images were not good enough. That's just my experiences though. The AF and low light capabilities of the R^ are amazing and totally worth it for me.

That's great to hear @@BrentHall! I genuinely appreciate your response as your wisdom is certs valued! It's hard to not love the handling of the R6 and the low light is the icing on the cake!

Hey Brent, I have completely enjoyed the simple, easy to follow and understand videos you put out. I hope you will be able to answer this for me :) You mention "piggy backing" you lens (I think you referred to the RF 85?) on your telescope....can you please explain how you do this?? Maybe a photo of how it looks? :) I am familiar (and have an adapter for my R6/telescope) but unsure of how to use it with the lens attached?? I'm going to a "Dark Sky" area here in FL, in about a month and would love to be ready to use the lens/s if I could figure this out :) Sorry if this should be something I should know already, but enjoying the learning process. Thanks in advance!!

Now that it's a year later, how do you feel about the RF 16mm vs the RF 24 1.8? I'm thinking of one or the other for astro.
@BrentHall
@BrentHall Жыл бұрын
Personally, I haven't been doing too much super wide astro stuff lately. I like the 24 and 35 better for the kind of shots I've been doing. I also kind of started to dislike not having an actual af switch on the 16. I ended up selling the 16 and picking up the 14-35, which I use for astro sometimes, but mostly for landscape and filming.

Hey Brent. Very useful vid. I shoot on Fuji, and recently began exploring MW astro on the East Coast, from Maine to West Virginia. I've been getting promising results with a Rokinon 12mm f/2, manual focus, and stacking around 20 images on StarryLandscapeStacker. So far, I've done only limited light painting for foregrounds, but will definitely look into Lume Cube options. Cheers

What are your thoughts on the potential for the 28-70 F2 for Astro? I know it’s big and heavy. Have seen some fantastic photos with it though. Thanks for the videos!
@BrentHall
@BrentHall 2 жыл бұрын
Well I would love to have that lens, for sure, but unless I win the lottery or get an absolutely massive commercial client deal or something, I won't be getting that thing anytime soon. I think it would probably do well for astro. I didn't mention it just because it's ridiculously expensive, and ginormous, and probably out of most people's reach. I have used it a couple times for other stuff and it was awesome, but stupid heavy!

Unless I missed you mentioning it, I would have expected you to mention the Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM ART.
@BrentHall
@BrentHall 2 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't mention that lens, though I did briefly mention that Sigma had a few options. I haven't tried that one. I've tried their 20, 24, and 35mm ART lenses, and on my old canon dslrs, I wasn't very happy with them, though I haven't tried them on my mirrorless cameras. I would think it the Sigma 14 would be a decent option, though I think it would probably have some significant coma (but I personally don't really care as much about that).
@DanuteP
@DanuteP 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrentHall I've used the Sigma 14mm art for Sony A7RIII. The center of the shots were clear but the coma was very pronounced. Another drawback is the size of the Sigma 14mm. It is huge and heavy on mirrorless. I use a Sony 20mm f1.8 now.
