In this video I try to take a photo of the soul nebula with a monster Canon 500mm f4 lens.
It was great fun and I hope you enjoy it. :)

The first thing that jumped out at me regarding the final image is that your post processing is very good. I think it brings out the nebulosity to great effect and overall it's very tastefully done.

Thank you, I think my stars still need a bit of work. 🙂

Very interested in this. I’m a long time photographer just starting to branch out into Astro. As such I have a selection of big white Canon lenses including the 500/4L mk2, the newer lighter version of that lens. I have seen very little output using those lens, so this was excellent. Out of interest what camera was that? I’ll be using a 5D4 (un modified)

Nice, I'm glad it was helpful. I have a 70-200 f2.8 which is fantastic for astro too so if you have one (sounds like you probably do) I'd highly recommend using that too, The camera I use is a baader modified 70d. 🙂

@@CuriousRiz I’m a prime man so I have the 200/2.8L, which again is much lighter. I might get my old 7D modified but it’s low light performance is nothing on the 5D4.

@@simongeorge2505 nice, the 200mm is even better! People get great results with them and honestly, if you're going to be stacking sub frames and calibrating etc. then the 7d will do a great job I'm sure.

Might I suggest stacking the 2 different nights using deep sky stacker - SIRIL doesn't really let you stack 2 nights unless you use SIRILIC, stack both nights with the separate flats, in deep sky stacker in 2 different groups then import the FIT32 file into SIRIL to process - means you won't lose a fair amount of data.

Nice, great suggestion! Will give that a go. 🙂🙂

@@CuriousRiz I have found that SIRIL isn't amazing for stacking over multiple nights but does really well post processing like Pixinsight - I have been stacking in DSS using the different groups, colour correct and background remove in SIRIL and then post process in GIMP.

@@shinyparts I think You're right, it takes longer but seems to do a better job from recent testing I've been doing

The final image was rather good to my eyes, I think the star shape near corners are a result of field curvature as the lens is very fast, so you need field flattener to fix it! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I knew there was something not write right but wasn't entirely sure what the issue was.

Mate, that is incredible! I have a canon 500mm that I got mint for just over £3k. I prominently shoot wildlife, but I'm soon moving to the countryside and wanted to have a blast. Could you give me a basic run down of what else I would need apart from the lens, camera and tripod? Would really appreciate your advice as there is limited information online about the 500mm for astrophotography. 👍 Cheers.

Thank you! 🙂 The mount is just a generic vixen mount about 15-20cm long.

Intrigued by the title so I watched. I got caught up in how many times you said "Um" that I had a hard time watching it. I bet if I went back and counted, you said it well over a hundred times. Good job but you have got to quit the Ums. PS. Great image of the Heart! Keep going.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, I really appreciate it and am aware too. I think I need to start scripting these things. Lol!
