ASU's Léon Marchand shatters 400 IM record at 2023 NCAA Championships

Arizona State student-athlete Léon Marchand broke his own NCAA record (3:31.57) in the 400 IM with a final time of 3:28.82 at the 2023 NCAA Swim & Dive Championships on Friday, March 24. Marchand's time is now a US Open record and he becomes the first man to mark a time under 3:30 in the 400 IM event.

No international records are recognized for 25 yd. pools, also referred to as Short Course Yards (SCY). This is a US Open and NCAA record. US Open records are the fastest by anyone in an American pool and kept for 25 yd, 25M and 50M pools.

He needs to get rid of Phelps' long course 400 record. For years it's been sickening to hear the nonsense that it's the best men's record. Lochte's 1:54 is a lot more problematic but I think he can eventually get that also

I think peirsol is gonna have his 200 back record longer than Lochte will have that 200 IM record. The only swimmer with a decent chance at the moment of taking peirsol's record is evengy rylov, but he's still 1.3 seconds off it and who knows when he'll be able to perform at a major international meet to break it

TBF until Marchand went a 4:04 at World Champs, no one was even close to Phelps's WR. Outside of Lochte, everyone was a 4:06 or slower, so I can see why people thought the 400 IM record was harder to beat. In the 200 IM, there's about 4-5 people who are knocking on the door of 1:54 right now so there's a good chance we'll see more 1:54s in the 200 than 4:03, 4:04 in the 400 IM.

That 1:54 was a race of two PBs, both Olympians and WR holders. To break that one without a competitive race will be an impressive feat!

Numbers don't lie : US women will still do ok at the World and Olympics (though the Aussies and Canadians will give them a hard time) but the men will struggle. Just look at the NCAA 100 fly for example : 7 out of the 8 finalists were foreigners (including the top 5) ! And Marchand wasn't even in the race. And remember the best Freestyle swimmer in the world isn't even here. By the end of the Paris Olympics, Popovici could own the WRs in the 50, 100, 200 and 400m (if he decides to swim it). And don't forget the Brit's Armada either, with a least 7 men who will contend for Gold or Silver... Fortunately, Ryan Murphy and Bobby Finke are still top dogs. And regarding Caleb, who knows ...

I'm not going to lie watching people swim has got to be the most boring thing ever. Love swimming. Hate watching it. Plus this looks like a 25 meter pool, the swimmers are underwater half the lap, then 3 or 4 strokes and turn for another 12 or 13 meters underwater...
