Asuncion Central Rail Station, or more properly, Estacion Central del Ferrocarril, is located in the heart of Asuncion Old Town.
It was built in the mid 19th century under the guidance of the then president of Paraguay, Carlos Antonio Lopez.
The station opened in 1861 and remained the centre of the rail network until it's closure in about 1995 and the complete closure of the Paraguayan rail network in 1999.
These days it is a museum bringing to life the age of steam in Paraguay and well worth a visit.
Outside the tracks have long been buried under the streets of Asuncion and the road outside is a busy one filled all day with traffic passing in front of the Plaza Uruguaya.
It is well kept and the exterior is a fine example of 19th workmanship.

Thanks, yes there are some lovely old buildings to be found in downtown Asuncion. I do enjoy a walk around there
