ASUS P2B Restoration: Board #2 - Merciless Corrosion!

The board in today's video, an ASUS P2B, is badly corroded! Broken traces, vias, SMDs, connectors, and sockets! When I started to work on this board, I had no idea how much work was waiting for me! If you have some retro gear that suffers from corrosion, this video may help take away some of the fear - but the sooner you deal with corroding hardware, the better! Since today's board required a lot of work, there won't be any additional details on the allegedly fake motherboard story, but there will be more in the upcoming videos!

As a teenager I was the happy "winner" of a P2B :) I had ordered a Socket 370 to Slot 1 adapter and the shop made an error and sent a P2B, too. I didn't dare to use it for the first few weeks but when the shop hadn't contacted me for over a month, I just used the board. Those were the days... 😁

I admire your patience and persistence. I would have had one look at that board and said: no, fk it. Too far gone. I am amazed that it POSTed, especially as the CPU slot was so corroded and the ASUS super I/O chip was mangled. You were lucky that the BGAs weren't corroded, even you wouldn't have been able to fix that. You must've felt relieved when it finally worked after spending 20+ hours (and the rest) on it.
@bitsundbolts
@bitsundbolts 2 ай бұрын
Oh, it was such a let down when the POST codes didn't start counting. Luckily, it was just the CPU not making good contact. I am also surprised that the ASUS chip was working and that the rest of the board seems to be working fine too. I fixed all the obvious issues and that seemed to have been enough. Let's see for how long that board will work, but I have a feeling that it will be fine for many years!

@@WelshProgrammer well... If you asked for all the passives and sockets to be populated, (and potentially modernised) you'd be left with maybe 10 ICs to transfer. The hardest would be the bga chipsets. You'd need a good rework station.
@WelshProgrammer

@@myne00 true, most if not all the passive, some of the active with modern replacements or successors and maybe some sockets like PCI and ISA and possibly AGP, EEPROMS etc but I doubt they carry the SECC, COAST or other special sockets like PGA370. Though it would probably get you most of the way.

They attach the pad with solder mask under the pad and then solder the new trace to the old trace and cut off excess. I sold so many of those P2B back when I had a shop in late 90s early 00s. Offered a few as gift too to realy good clients or friends. Just at Home I had up to 4 of them on various P3 setups for tests or guest friends when we wanted to do some lan gamming :) Also had 1 P2B-DS, dual CPU and SCSI with 10k WDC and Atlas 10k2 or 10k3 HDDs in RAID mode (0+1). and same setup for 1 P2B-LS single CPU but Lan 100MB/s and Adaptec AIC7890 UW SCSI also with a few 10k HDD in RAID 5 as main server. The P2XBL/D from DFI, dual CPU with BX chipset was great too as fast as P2B xxx for OC or dual CPU power but no extra feature like SCSI or Lan. my first slot one MB was the very nice ASUS P2L97 MB... this doesnt make us younger :) anyway great job, I realy enjoy your perseverance and tenacity at fixing those legendary parts and you are very nicely inspired on how to put up a good show each time, keep the good work sir ! :)

Very nice! You had access to all the great stuff back then 😉. Owning a computer store must have been amazing - and a pain at the same time! If you stockpiled hardware, you had to worry about it being obsolete within six months. At least this is what I always wondered when I visited local stores and they had tech from a year ago sitting on shelves. I don't know if they ever sold that stuff. I believe to have a P2L97 in the to-do pile 😉

@@bitsundbolts Indeed, I must admit it was very great time ;) As for the pain with stockpiled hardware, just like most partner or competitor in the surrounding we were all working in tight flow. Only stockpiling part with very stable prices like cases, keyboards, mouse, some basic CRT screen, etc... Only ordering GC, MB, CPU, RAM and HDD when clients ordering them. But at that time clients were much patient as now, we usualy had 1-2 weeks between clients ordering a computer and delivery time and oftenly calling clients to tell them "hey, we recieved it earlier, and it's ready waiting for his new familly :)" and clients answering "wow, but it's only been 1 week! You guys are fast !" :) For the pro we always kept a few crucial parts like HDDs in stock as mechanical failure were the most often one at that time. Choosing to work with only a few reliable brand like ASUS and DFI for MB and avoiding most other brands after trying a few different models (ABIT, Gigabyte, Epox, Aopen, etc) gave us almost no failure on MB. The only few MB we had to change were after very hard electric chocks or very bad handling by clients so almost never from manufacturer. I vagely remember a P3B-F refusing to boot and a couple of CUSL2-C refusing to boot with most SDRam brand we used at that time (single vs dual sided SDRAM was in fact the trouble). As main tech in the shop I often refused to buy or sell well known unreliable parts or parts we tried and caused us too much troubles for the few € saved like SIS, Nforce or ALI chipset based MB (exept the famous ASUS P5A). We still end up with very few unsold parts like a Fic MB for SLOT A AMD Athlon because the one we sold to a client failed like 3 times before he decided to listen and buy better stuff (special request from very big client that wanted to try it ASAP) . Main platform we were selling back in the days was slot 1 and S370 with intel PII and PIII, a few celerons (128kb cache only). But I realy enjoyed the K6 series and then Athlon XP series too. We enjoyed sponsoring or leading lan parties too with local partners. Biggest lan party I had to setup was a up to 244 gaming computers (including servers) people were comming with their own computers and we were linking them to the network we had setup for the lanparty made of 11x 24 port switching + 1 RNIS or DSL router for DHCP only (made it easier to link everyone ASAP) Anyway it realy reminds me that this was the best of time for computer fun :) Unfortunatly it was also a realy great time to make so much money that it got up to my associates head and they end up stealing so much money and burning the shop to try to cover up most of their traces. That the only part I realy regret from that time in fact :) BTW I may have a few old parts you could be interested in. Feel free to let me know how you want to get in contact in private sometimes.

Surprisingly, those boards came from a local classifieds website in Germany. I have had those boards for quite some time. I am ashamed to say that they were probably sitting in Germany for a good year (which probably made their condition worse!). A board in such a condition should cost you almost nothing! I paid about 6 USD per board including shipping.

I did, but there are a few problems I need to overcome or I'm not yet comfortable with. Those ASUS boards would take too much time to have an uncut version. I wanted to also live stream, but haven't had the courage nor the setup yet. But I'm working on all of those.

I would try and see if a solution of a weak drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide) would work as a solder flux just to get the deep corrosion off. You would definitely have to wash the boards really well, possibly a run through a dish washer. I've never had to repair anything that corroded and haven't tried the drain cleaner idea except on large metal areas.

@argoneum

There are artists making wicker baskets and handwoven fabric clothes, why not "folks electronics repairs"? 😸 For copper corrosion: it first forms copper (I) oxide, which is brown-red and sticks well to the copper metal. Thin layer forms fast, and is relatively harmless, even preventing further oxidation in dry air. Copper next oxidizes further, also reacting with CO₂, ammonia and water, forming various carbonates / oxides / hydroxides mix (or intermediates). Water and oxygen from air are enough, ammonia and its compounds speed up the process vastly, turning copper metal into a blue-green mush. More or less, there are more complex things happening also. Vinegar dissolves the carbonate / oxide / hydroxide mush leaving pure copper mostly untouched (at least for the relatively short time it takes to clean things). Then the thin copper (I) oxide layer re-appears. The normal Sn60Pb solder is close to eutectic point (the sharp lowest melting point, from a solid metal chunk right to fully liquid). Any other composition will have higher melting range (not a point any more) and will look like a paste. Now speculating: corrosion will remove out one of the metals first, I bet it will be tin. There will be tiny crystals richer in the metal in excess (usually lead) floating within liquid metal, also intermixed with oxides.
@bitsundbolts
@bitsundbolts 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your explanation! So, whatever I read was correct about copper turning brown first. Also, in your last part, you speculate that tin may be the first to be affected. I can absolutely verify that since the corrosion on board number 3 (also on the ASUS chip), the thin tin layer on the legs of this chip can be removed like peeling an egg. Below that layer is pure copper which hasn't been affected yet.

Good question - drilling through the board to get rid of that fully corroded via was inconclusive. But I wouldn't be surprised if its a 4-layer board. @@bitsundbolts That's good news with the board being 4 layers. If all else fails with inner layers, sometimes (with shorts) it is worth a try to go with a destructive and restorative approach instead of a conservative one (literally burning out shorts) - I've seen that on strongly damaged Amiga boards.

I just came back from the dentist. They use a water jet with abrasive powder to clean teeth. I'm sure its an outragiously expensive device, but I wonder if it's something someone inventive could cobble together with a "Waterpik" ™ and some sort of venturi to pull in fine abrasive powder. A Waterpik with vinegar in it might be worth a try by itself to clear out those vias. Of course, at this scale, a water jet could be completely ineffective.
