Dang... wish we knew when, I'm waiting for a Win Mini 2024 to ship, but more battery life and the upgrades/support of an Ally sound pretty nice. Without more specifics I think I'll have to keep waiting for the mini though. I really do dig the clamshell idea.

They need to lose the proprietary connections for the xgmobile. So other egpus can be used.

This excites me having play tested the Ally Z1e at a retailer recently and being impressed. The bigger battery, new screen and mature software will be enough for me to finally dip my hands in windows portable device. Desperately need this to keep playing my games away from the tv.

Returned 3 different Ally units after SD card slot failed on all of them. Really intrigued by the addition of USB 4 for eGPU setups. Debating if I should spring for the X or wait for second gen.

So going to get one to play at home away from my main computer. Use my current one as my on the go companion to my Asus ROG Flow Z13. I don't mind the XG Mobiles, I really like them.

Seems solid. Incremental, as expected. Wonder what the final weight will be, as they aren't using OLED to offset battery weight. Personally wish they would, as the battery life increase then would be massive. All in all, will be a great device---as the original Z1E was great. Will rather wait for Super Switch personally though.

Thanks for the prompt info video on this Phawx. It won't be worth the update to me, but I really like what Asus is doing with the Ally. I plan on getting a m.2 angle adapter soon and putting a 2280 4tb in mine. Will have a 5tb handheld. Now if they just add in an Armory Crate toggle for AMD Frame Generation, holy this thing could last me years!

What this does mean is that I can look for a saturation of current model Ally Z1e on eBay in the coming months as people get ready to "upgrade"👍

To me the upgrade is worth it if the battery will really be as large as they hinted, i currently have the Ally and battery life is my only big issue

if the price it decent I would upgrade. I like the 2280 slot over the 2230. I picked up one of those adapters but after reading post on reddit stating those adpaters killed their 2280 drives I am not putting my 4tb drive into one of those guy at all.

I'd like to see the usb-c port get updated to usb 4. I know they want us to buy their xg mobile, but they cost more than the handheld itself. Would be nice to use something other than their proprietary egpu option.

The Ally X would be great, But i don't feel the need to upgrade from the Steam deck yet. I can wait for a 9000 series, i might even move onto a gaming tablet like minisforum v3.

What the Steam Deck has taught me is that tailor-made APUs work much better for the TDP-range and performance requirement of handheld gaming devices. Fitting a larger battery is literally just a brute force solution to the problem of using off-the-shelf laptop chips. Handhelds should be efficient in the 3-10W range (Steam Deck). not 15-23W (ROG Ally)... Hopefully this becomes a lucrative market for AMD so that they will actually make off-the-shelf APUs specifically designed for handheld gaming devices.

I REALLY hope by the end of 2024 we get at least one compact handheld pc under 500 bucks

Would any OEM (ASUS included) release a new "upgraded" laptop more than a year after the previous one and not change either the APU or the screen? No is the answer for laptops, so why would the answer be yes for PC handhelds? The Steam Deck OLED slightly changed the APU and drastically changed the screen, which was enough to convince a chunk of LCD Deck owners to upgrade (I personally didn't because I wanted a bigger perf jump and am OK with the LCD screen and hooking it up to my 55" OLED TV occasionally). I can't see a single current Ally owner upgrading to the X variant and I suspect the X variant will struggle to sell because a) the original Ally will drop in price (assuming Asus will continue to make it) and b) most people who would be targets for an Ally model of some sort would have already have bought one.

IM EXTREMELY HYPED ABOUT 32gb + 2280 but i feel they focused too much attention on the silly armory crate bit on the video. I don’t think people are staring at the game launcher and drooling over that lol. I spend more time playing games and when I’m not I’m finding cool mods to try out. I really hope we see sticks similar to the Xbox elite series then it would be the goat

Been holding out from buying a gaming laptop for a handled. Hopefully the Ally X fixed all its issues and Asus actually releases eGPU that are affordable and widely available. The 6850 and 3080 were priced crazy and was so hard to buy. Heck i won't pay 1600 bucks for a 4090 !!!!

First order of business will be to get a 4tb 2280 because I'm fairly certain they won't ship with anything more than 1tb - if that much.

If they fix the SD card at last I will be back, sold my v1 after it failed even though not used.

I don't mind carrying external battery packs I have 2 for my handhelds and tbh don't usually use them. co's the ROG ally battery is enough for my usaqge and if I am gaming for a while i am usually plugged in

It's great that Armory Crate has features we've had on Linux for years. If only MS would poach more KDE devs. But now W11 and W12 as well are both just SaaS and nothing else. Running ChatGPT to sell your data sure is important on an offline handheld.

Sold my ally and kept the OLED specifically because of the battery life. So if this handheld finally has a battery that can last 3 hours in intensive games at a decent TDP then it's a no brainer.

ASUS would have to be crazy to return with just a 7 inch screen, when AAA 3D titles are made so people can see and sometimes intereract with tiny things in the distance on a 42 inch living-room TV. OLED might help battery life too, but cost will go up for sure, but the battery life on these systems is really really important! The Ally also needs a proper dpad that does not jump when trying to dash in fighting games. The dpad is very important for playing many many types of games! Two extra buttons on the back like the Steam Deck too, for improved input options, simply holding these rear buttons to modify what other buttons do is very very handy on a system with Windows and no physical keyboard.

Basically Steam Deck OLED treatment, better screen, bigger battery, bigger storage and finally the placement of thr micro SD card slot.

I just wish the new battery fits in the old ROG Ally model, and they start selling the replacement battery. If that were the case, I would just buy the new bigger battery to replace the old one.

As long as they won't replace the XGm port I will be happy so I can fully utilize the 24GB ram for processing when connected to the 2022 XG Mobile.

While I would LOVE a black Ally, the weight increase might be a deal breaker for me. The reason I bought the Ally over the rest was because of how lightweight and compact it is.

If they put bigger battery its gonna be very heavy i dont think its gonna be good but if they put 60 whr inside it will be huge.

I wish the ROG ALLY had the Steam Deck controls layout. It is closer to the PlayStation layout which I prefer.

I don't see any reason to upgrade from Z1extreme ally to this. It already runs all the games it's supposed to run just fine.

This is a fix for their defective first unit. The fact that they refuse to acknowledge that and do a proper recall says a lot about this company. Don’t upgrade, try to RMA for the SD card if you have that issue. If not, don’t even do that. The SD is almost guaranteed to fail but Asus’s customer service is so bad they might do worse damage to your device during the process, then try to charge you for it. Not worth the risk if you don’t have the issue yet. Don’t upgrade, and don’t buy another Asus product.

Bigger battery , faster Ram, as card slot moved should be a significant upgrade .

Wish they had upgraded the screen size. OLED is great, but even keeping the same screen just making it 8" or a little bigger would have been an upgrade worth buying.

They better keep the XG Mobile port I just bought the 4090 XG Mobile and it's amazing other than the price and the thicc annoying cable and the USBC has no display out. High refresh rate OLED with smaller bezels and VRR, USB4, 32GB ram, M.2 2280 native without the adapter, and black exterior.

32 GB is a game changer. On current Ally default memory configuration is 4 GB for GPU and 12 GB for system. This causes problems in many games. You need set UMA driver to 6 GB for GPU and 10 GB. With those settings you can play many games like Enshrouded or No Rest for the Wicked that crash on default configuration. But this solution isn't a silver bullet. New games are designed for 16 GB of system memory. Windows support virtual memory paging so those games won't crash but performance drops significantly. Windows constantly swap parts of system memory to SSD. Handheld with 32GB will solve those problems. You will be able to setup UMA driver to 8 GB for GPU and 24 for system

Faster ram And bigger battery. Better sticks and cooling set up. If it’s priced right, I would consider selling my ally and getting it. I heard the battery is basically double play time to the original,so if you’re getting one hour in aaa game, you’ll now get two that’s good deal for me.

I think 24gb should be the minimum. 32gb should be in sweet spot SKUs and 48 for the "overkill" systems that can dedicate a full 16gb to VRAM usage while still having 32gb system RAM usable so you can play triple a games even 3-5 years from now, with low to medium settings but won't run out of RAM at least
