24GB of RAM is a decent amount for a gaming handheld. Allocate the full 8GB to the iGPU and allow 16 for system memory.

@@Airwolf2030the deal of additional 100 bucks for all that upgrades is already way too sweet, which really worries me. Not sure if getting more ram would not bump up price higher, so they had to constraint the budget for old users to be interested in moving to X, I guess.

First of all none of them use that much RAM, but even in a future where some games may use that much, you're gonna be bottlenecked at the GPU and CPU before you come anywhere close to using that RAM. PC gamers have to get over this "higher number better" goofyness.

Smaller fans usually means more noise, as they have to ramp up the RPM to get the same volume. Will be interesting to see how that actually turns out. I personally barely heard the Ally after tweaking the fan curves.

Super happy I wasted $2,000 on an XG Mobile. Super happy the proprietary connector we were told we would need an XG Mobile to use in these future devices was completely removed and not present. Super happy all that money I spent on a forward compatible device is no longer forward compatible.

Man this made me so mad. The other improvements I can get around but I was looking into a xg mobile but they're super overpriced and older, more affordable models impossible to come by. Now we have a new ally that could go for any egpu and now I'm stuck with mine and my xg port 💀

I picked one up and sold it for the Legion Go because of the compatibility with EGPUs. I picked up a onexgpu for my go and its great. It was totally worth it. Now that they have the usb4 on the ally, it makes more sense.

I love my ROG ally, preordered and picked up at launch. My partner got one for $700 AUD (price in Australia was $1300 AUD for comparison) and we have no regrets. I keep the rog ally docked in my loungeroom and keep my heavy gaming to my PC. But as a media device that also games and is portable, it really suits my needs. Especially after putting in a 2tb ssd

I was pretty close with my guesses. 24gb of ram and keeping the Z1 was the main thing I thought they'd do. I thought they'd do a bigger battery but quite amazed they've been able to put double the original capacity in!

I got an ally extreme for $300 off of fb market. I recommend changing out the rear cover and doing the 2230 to 2280 conversion. Super easy and simple to do. I am almost never away from power so the battery life doesnt bother me. Anyone who doesnt know or is thinking about getting one, these things charge FAST. I also have a SSD constantly hooked up to my charger/hdmi block. This makes gaming so much easier than playing on a console. I can easily pick up a game, play for a half hour and put it down.

The only thing that stopped me from buying the ally is battery and egpu support, both have been fixed the only thing that is remaining is to see if it has any problems or not (I really hope it comes to my expectations)

idk, it's nice to see that they are listening to feedback and improving upon the device. But I prefer the ayaneo and gpd4win size. I guess 6"? That's more carriable and if I want a bigger screen I just connect it.

Was just about to pickup the Ally on sale at Best Buy but waiting for the refresh instead. The current Z1E chip is powerful enough so that doesn’t bother me, but those other proposed upgrades are substantial enough to wait for the X and pay a slightly higher premium.

35wh power drain on an 80wh battery is like 2 hours and 15 minutes. Not a so great revolution. Large battery but similar performance as steam deck

@@FedericoSchiavoni Big nope. The 80wh battery is way too massive to be of a similar performance to the deck. If you run it at 35wh then it might be similar in duration but it'll run games way better. If you run it at 25wh that's already slightly over 3h of playtime on a AAA with also better performance. Under 25 then it'll have similar or lower performance especially at 15 where the SD excels but then the battery will last you a whopping 5h-6h of play time.

Hardware specs look decent, but I can't see existing Ally owners upgrading to it when the two most important components (the APU and the screen) are identical to the old model. At least the Steam Deck OLED changed both of those, which did persuade some LCD Deck owners to upgrade. The biggest downer of the Ally X remains the fact that it runs Windows 11, which is a mediocre OS on most hardware, but it's particularly dreadful on PC handhelds. Yes, you can probably install Nobara or Bazzite, but the vast majority of Ally owners won't.

I'd only consider upgrading if there's a trade in program. The battery upgrade is huge, and would allow you to run at Turbo all the time and still get decent playtime.

If you have no issues with the old one, then keeping it shouldn't be an issue, as the new one doesn't really give much meaningful upgrade as we have the same APU and Screen as the previous version. Unless you really want Ally X for its better RAM and Battery.

In docked the ally is so memory bandwidth starved that you might actually see a completely linear +20% performance with the 20% faster ram. If not almost always above +10% so if you want extra performance, sure

If you mostly play at docked mode, there is no reason to upgrade to the X. You could even get the ram upgrade to 32GB done if you wanted to.

Handhelds have their RAM soldered to the motherboard - so unless you're going desolder the RAM, buy compatible RAM mobules and solder them to the board yourself, then write code to specifically update the BIOS to accept the RAM and block future Windows updates - then no, you're not upgrading the RAM on these things.

The new version of the Ally is to fix those Hardware issues, as well adjust some other stuff. Which is why it's practically not getting any upgrade, as this Ally X is just a refresh. As for the RMA issue, well technically it occurs in every company. Apple is the biggest offender of overpriced repair costs.

just got rid of my Ally that I picked up at launch, great memories as it was my first PC in a way in 15 years now gaming on a Razer Blade 16. Not as portable but a great move coming from the Ally. The Rog Ally was truly worth every penny to me.

my guess is not enough 7.4 inch OLED screens are in stock for this .. hence why they reuse the same screen for this mid gen refresh.. your only hope is next year or two years down the line.

personally, I have the normal ally (the one with the Z1 extreme chip) and despite the upgrade looking good, it's not worth the upgrade for me yet, I'll keep my ally already and I'll consider upgrading when the ally V2 or whatever it'll be called will be released

Finally two USB ports and 1 TB SSD! The most important thing are USB ports for USB sticks (15mm and 5mm sticks out). They are 3x as fast as an SD card. I use it on all handhelds for my game library (from GOG). Also 1TB SSD and better ergonomics. These are the most important and necessary changes.

I've had such good luck with Asus products over the years that the warranty thing wouldn't affect my decision. (good to be aware of it and hopefully they do actually fix things now that they've been slapped on the wrist with bad press) The extra/faster memory, larger battery, full-size M.2, repositioning of the SD card, and the fact it comes in black are all great improvements in my opinion. It's just too bad they didn't go with an OLED panel and add OCuLink, which would've improved the battery life even more, plus made it quite a viable gaming desktop replacement. Full HD is still a lot of pixels for those iGPUs to push at high framerates.

I really hope that in the future they won’t do a version with only OLED….. some of us have very sensitive eyes for PWM flickering. We basically cannot use OLED or it hurts like dropping acid in our eyes that can hurt for days and a bad migraine. I am basically stuck with a potato phone because of this. Hopefully they do different versions for the ALLY 2.

I recently got one and I use it mostly plugged in as a cooler and more energy efficient desktop PC. I'll just probably wait. Portably I mostly use my Steam Deck OLED. I will wait for a version 2 of this device.

I've got the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and if the Ally 2 (forget the X) doesnt impress, I'll be looking at the next Odin.

i love the way this portable device can handle regular software and not dedicated limited versions like gameboy advanced get poor adaptations of snes games. handheld is better form factor than laptop for gaming, because it's focused on gaming, the controller is embedded on the device which you can hold closer to your face, which requires less big screen and less power to run it.

Those are some nice upgrades but I moved off my ROG Ally because of the SD Card issues and grabbed an AyaNeo Slide. Until they improve the Windows on handheld experience, having that built in keyboard avoids so many weird Windows quirks caused by an on-screen keyboard

Highly disappointed they removed the XG Mobile port on this one. Loved the Ally at launch for this specific reason because I had an XG Mobile from my X13 laptop, which was such a game changer for me I actually sold off my desktop pc. But I guess a very small minority had this XG Mobile ecosystem, so for most of the market, the USB4 is a good decision

No upgrade to a OLED is really disappointing. I know they’re probably saving it for the ally 2 but still. OLED makes such a huge difference

will wait for the next one with better CPU/GPU and larger OLED screen, but glad to see they improved it. I will keep gaming on my SteamDeck OLED :)
