Asus did it again! ROG Flow X16 with Ryzen 9 6900HS and RTX 3070Ti is a gaming beast that could be further boosted with an external RTX 3080 eGPU!

I personally love the 2 in 1 form factor. No other machine like this exists and there's so much potential for it given the amount of power inside.

The 2in1 form factor with this level of performance is the spelling point imo. I wish Asus keep making and improving this.

Disagreeing with the reviewer on the 360 degree touch display: this is one of the best laptops for students that need a display with pen input for OneNote and such. The display is large, has the perfect resolution at this size (so you don't need scaling), has a high refresh rate (makes drawing smoother), and can go very bright for better legibility. There are already plenty of traditional gaming laptops. We need bigger convertibles like these. That it can also game on the side, is an even bigger bonus (though I would've preferred them leaving the dGPU out of the laptop, and just offer us the optional eGPU).
@teamredstudio7012

I would not have preferred leaving out the dGPU. The eGPU is another expense on top and makes it a lot less portable. Maybe they can make a cheaper model without dGPU for the people who want it but I'm happy they included a monster of a dGPU and the iGPU is even great and can serve super well for every task that isn't heavy gaming.

Thinking of getting an x16. Mainly for the display. Most people don’t see the difference between 60 to 80 frames. You do see the difference from a beautiful display and this is a great one.

I've had mine for a few days now. I don't game much at all, what i use it for is 3d modelling & rendering for landscape architecture. It's a damn sight cheaper than workstation equivalents, has much better features and still looks completely professional. unlike pretty much all over powerful gaming laptops. i've already taken this to clients to show them around models & renders in tablet mode, letting them navigate with their fingers. Inside, and outside on the sites. This laptop i feel will earn its money back in no time at all. Also; - You can charge it from usb c. - It runs completely silent for normal spreadsheet, streaming, youtube, emails etc. - The screen rotates any which way you want, so you can have the warm air keeping you warm if you're outside/in the cold, or rotate the device and have the vents blowing away from you. lovely machine so far. p.s the hinge is plenty stiff enough on mine

X16 is everything I wish the x13 was! Although there are still some concerns, weight, cooling and having a full size SD card reader. I went with the x13 because how powerful of a 2 in 1 it was "is". Sadly I may not be able to afford the X16 now cause I didn't keep up with laptop news. If I can afford the x16 is what I'll be choosing. XGmobile comes in 4070 but you may have an updated video already by now.

If you want an ideal gaming laptop, buy a 5kg brick. Flow X16 is more of an all-in-one for guys who want a portable work machine (retouching, modeling, rendering, coding, drawing, etc.) and maybe play some games from time to time. The primary auditory of this device already has a PC monster at home, so this is an almost perfect secondary laptop.

I'm considering this laptop (since it's somehow still available in my area). I wonder if bundle with this external eGPU is worth it. 3070Ti is just fine for most cases. I think it's the best to simply but the laptop only and hope for compatible external RTX 4080/90 in 2023. Thank you for your video.

First time on your channel, and I really enjoyed your review. As an owner of the X16 I would add a few things. I really REALLY enjoy the flexibility / power combination but there are a couple of caveats. Firstly. I use this laptop for work as well as play, but the webcam SUCKS. It's so bad! Secondly, I enjoy the touch screen and convertible form factor, but this isn't a viable tablet. It's just too heavy. My son has the X13, and that's the one to go for if you want the tablet experience.
@techniqualities

Thank you for your feedback! That’s what I also thought: too big and heavy in tablet mode. As for the webcam… well, that’s something I didn’t test. I missed it entirely!😂

You're missing the point... The XG Mobile is not for improving temps, it's for upgrading your GPU without changing your laptop... On this laptop, you can upgrade the RAM for up to 64gb and then if you find you're needing a better graphics card, you don't change the laptop, just get a new GPU just like you would on a desktop PC... This will give more lifetime to your laptop especially if you use it for work and also game. The fact that it's a 2 in 1 is very appealing for creators, designers, video editors, nomads and programmers like me, as you can place it on the plane and play videogames in the air, you can place it somewhere an duse another monitor as most people will have a couple extra monitors for this laptop, external mouse and external keyboard, so the tent mode is very useful... Also for hotel gaming or in bed gaming, tent mode is God sent. The thing about this laptop is that it is just very very versatile, you can game on the go, you can take it to a friend's house, you can work, keyboard and mouse pad are nice enough so you can travel without as much bulk as you normally would with a regular high end desktop replacement laptop as they are usually very bulky, and still have great power you have a great screen, you can upgrade your GPU, RAM and SSD, you have a decent enough processor that is as fast as a 3800X or 5800X or at least feels on par, as you won't really notice much of a difference for most tasks. Every year a new XG Mobile comes out so if you bought the 2022 model you will have a new GPU to buy every year but most people will get one every 2 or 3 years, so it makes a lot of sense, as a $1500 laptop for most folks that do what I do is just not worth it, but a $1500 GPU is very much worth it as it will get more life out of your old laptop in a few years... Then eventually you just sell this one or just buy the new model and repeat the cycle... It's pretty much the perfect laptop

IMO, they should make a variant without any dGPU at all. This will make it cheaper to manufacture and ensure maximal cooling for the CPU. Hell, they could make a proper tablet with i5 and their weird flat plug and make a truly portable and versatile gaming TABLET. It'll be a productivity beast.

I greatly appreciate your review. I am a business owner who travels with a business 💻. I also like to game and repurpose my laptops on replacement to my children as their video viewer / light gaming. Your review is the only one I found referencing the lower heat with the external GPU (meaning to me longer laptop life). I am now waiting for more USA availability to get one with the mini-LED display & (now) an external GPU.

Why asus doesn’t make a GPU enclosure using the Cy mobile port for desktop GPU That would be a difference Having a vertical docking station that looks like a small stylish tower when your hook up the laptop with a desktop GPU in it that works at full speed with the Cy mobile port

If you don't want the touch screen or 360 display and extra cost and weight, there is a simple solution. Buy a model that doesn't have this. ASUS designed this entire line of x13 and x16 laptops to be 2 in 1. I was looking for exactly this, the most powerful 2 in 1 in existence. As a software developer this is just amazing, during work the laptop can be folded and put in portrait mode to see more code, it's insanely fast for developing software and when you're done working you can flip the laptop back, turn up the refresh rate and start gaming. You can also put it in tent mode or tablet mode to watch videos on an amazing display. When I want to draw, I can just use the big screen instead of needing an external touch display. Maybe not everyone is a power user who does a lot of different tasks on a computer but for the people who are, this is just amazing that you can do everything anywhere.

This is great, thanks! I like your review style! About the issues you raise about the convertible form factor and touch -- most gaming computers are traditional laptops without touch. If you don't need touch and want a conventional laptop, you have lots to choose from. On the other hand, there are very few convertible computers with a decent gpu. So, again, Asus is offering something different from what dominates the market. Thinking of your first thoughts about "what is a gaming computer?" -- I'm not a gamer but do a lot of multi-media work. I need a better gpu than you find in most mainstream laptops, but not what you get in a high-end gaming laptop. I need a flexible form factor with multi-touch and pen support that most gaming laptops don't have. So to me, the x16 is in a kind of "creators" sweet spot for the kind of work I do. About 16" being too big for a convertible -- well, yeah, it's not like an iPad. But I still would find it useful on the desk when I'm using touch or pen input and would like to get the computer keyboard out of the way. Anyway, thanks for a super helpful review!

Well said! Just because a product may not appeal to the mainstream, doesn't mean it shouldn't be made at all. One simple reason I want a 2-in-1 is so that I can use an external keyboard, with the screen positioned just behind the keyboard (in "tent" mode), bringing it a bit closer. I applaud ASUS for producing this product. If they made a 17" one, I'd applaud even louder. (unfortunately the Fold 17 is a bit too expensive)

This has possibilities if the cpu, memory and drive can be the best possible gen12 i7 or i9. That way it extends the life of the machine as much as possible. The internal gpu only needs to be adequate able to run all non video intensive programs. Why you ask? The egpu will allow to run games to an external monitor. But when you unplug it on the go you are left with a beast power 2in1 that is lighter, has a longer battery life, and runs a great deal cooler. Why do most people need a gaming computer they can carry to the coffee house or work? They dont! But many people do need a powerful portable machine with a long battery life. And since the have a machine with a strong enough cpu and enough memory to run games, a detached gpu that keeps heat away from the rest of the components is a great idea. Just as long as your not fool enough to try and use the internal laptop display and cut your bandwidth in half. In this use case of a desktop replacer laptop and an egpu is a great deal large than a dedicated gaming laptop. Therefore you can sell many more units at a cheaper cost and capture a much larger market.

Overall, this is an excellent laptop. However, if you want him to achieve all the needs from laptops to desktops to tablets. Then obviously no computer can do that. If you think of it as a tablet, the weight of 2.2kg is obviously too heavy. His flip function only allows you to be closer to the screen when you connect to an external keyboard, or to watch videos or play games in bed without being blocked by the air outlet

You got so hung up on the screen when the screen is amazing for use in a gaming laptop. Just because it does extra duty seems to bring out your ire. It's an extra benefit that you can choose to use or not to use. It's a beautiful thing!
